Faithful Departed Commemoration of All Faithful Departed The Solemn Holy Eucharist November 2, 2018 7:00 p.m. Washington National Cathedral about today’s commemoration The observance of All Souls’ Day is an extension of the Feast of All Saints’. From very early times, the word “saint” was most associated with persons of heroic sanctity, whose deeds were recalled with gratitude by later generations. By the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day—on which the Church remembered that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church. It then became a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends. In keeping with this practice, we will recall by name those who have been a part of the broader Cathedral community who died over this past year. Lord, have mercy. the collect for all faithful departed O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of your Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The people are seated. 3 The Word of God the first reading Wisdom 3:1-9 The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. The Word of the Lord. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. the second reading I Corinthians 15:50-58 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. the prayers of the people After each intercession, the people respond, Hear us, Lord. The presider offers a concluding collect; the people respond, Amen. the peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and are seated. 6 the offertory An offering is received to support the Cathedral’s ministry of sharing God’s love with the world. The altar is prepared for Holy Communion. A book containing the names of the departed for whom prayers have been requested is placed on the altar. domine jesu christe M. Duruflé Sung in Latin. Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, liberate the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit. Deliver them from the lion’s mouth; let not hell engulf, let them not fall into darkness. Sacrifices and prayers of praise, O Lord, we offer to thee. Receive them, Lord, on behalf of those souls we commemorate this day. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death unto life, which once thou promised to Abraham and to his seed. Amen. The people stand as able. The Holy Communion the great thanksgiving It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: 7 sanctus & benedictus M. The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ’s passion and resurretion and prays over the bread and wine. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
