    Commemoration of All Faithful Departed The Solemn Holy Eucharist November 3, 2019 4 pm Washington National Cathedral about today’s commemoration The observance of All Souls’ Day is an extension of the Feast of All Saints’. From very early times, the word “saint” was most associated with persons of heroic sanctity, whose deeds were recalled with gratitude by later generations. By the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day on which the Church remembered that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church. It then became a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends.     Commemoration of All Faithful Departed The Solemn Holy Eucharist November 2, 2018 7:00 p.m. Washington National Cathedral about today’s commemoration The observance of All Souls’ Day is an extension of the Feast of All Saints’. From very early times, the word “saint” was most associated with persons of heroic sanctity, whose deeds were recalled with gratitude by later generations. By the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day—on which the Church remembered that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church. It then became a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends. In keeping with this practice, we will recall by name those who have been a part of the broader Cathedral community who died over this past year.
