Whakapapa of the Principal Female Chiefs 1890 ............................................. 115 Patrick Parsons 1 Introduction This thesis examines the involvement of Hineipaketia Te Hei in the sale of and succession to tribal land that she exercised authority over in Hawke’s Bay during the nineteenth century. Little has been written about Hineipaketia and she has for the most part been ignored in written historical accounts. At best she is a shadowy figure attached to the better known figure of Te Hapuku who was effectively the ‘government agent’. Hineipaketia had ultimate authority over large tracts of land, which without her assent could not have been purchased by the Crown. In written sources she is viewed as a woman of high rank who had authority over and was eager to sell as much land as possible. Hineipaketia, Te Hapuku and Hori Niania Te Aroatua, are considered to be responsible for the wholesale disposal of large tracts of land. However the process by which the land was sold needs to be placed in the context of the times. Hineipaketia descends from Ngati Te Whatuiapiti, Ngati Te Rangikoianake, Ngai Tahu o Takapau and Ngati Kahungunu. Hineipaketia was senior in rank to her older relative Te Hapuku with whom she maintained a close relationship throughout her life, and her younger relative Hori Niania Te Aroatua. She was also known variously or referred to as Te Kuini, Te Hei, Henerieta Te Hei, Heipora1, and Tia. The catalyst for writing this thesis was an assertion made some years ago that our whanau descend from Hineipaketia Te Hei. I am of Ngai Tahu o Te Waipounamu descent and my wahine tipuna is Riria Taihekeheke. Her mother2 was Hineipaketia and when I was informed that the Hineipaketia our whanau descend from was the ‘Queen of Heretaunga’ I began researching her. An article to this effect appeared in the Ngai Tahu magazine Te Karaka, in 2002. Hineipaketia of Te Waipounamu whom our whanau descend from has a different whakapapa from Hineipaketia of Hawke’s Bay.3 The whakapapa in Te Karaka was that of Hineipaketia of Te Waipounamu, but the accompanying story combined elements of the stories of both 1 This is likely to have been because of her close association with Te Hapuku’s wife Te Heipora. 2 Some oral histories record Hineipaketia as the grandmother of Riria Taihekeheke. 3 Hinepaketia of Te Waipounamu is a daughter of Te Rangipake and Mihiteata. Hine-i-paketia Te Hei is a daughter of Hihipa Te Nahu and Hineiwhakwhiwhia, a daughter of Te Rangikoianake’s son Te Kikiri. 2 women.4 Ngati Te Whatuiapiti oral history appears to support the story. According to oral history, Hineipaketia and Te Hapuku’s wife, Te Heipora, were taken to the Wairarapa as a place of refuge after the battles at Roto-a-Tara. From there it is said Hineipaketia was taken to Kaikoura, Te Waipounamu.5 My wahine tipuna Riria Taihekeheke was born in Kaikoura in 1826 and kidnapped by Te Rauparaha in 1828. Oral history has more importance for tangata whenua than written accounts which are generally viewed as selective and habitually positioned in a political, social, or economic context for a particular purpose. The wairua or spirit of history assumes a much more important role than written history. Hineipaketia was married at least twice, to Puhara Hawaikirangi and later Nepia Hapuku, the son of Te Hapuku and Te Heipora, but according to oral and archival sources she had no children. She adopted her near relative Arihi Te Nahu6 who was born on 24 January 1851.7 Arihi was the eldest child of Te Hapuku’s eldest son Karanema and Te Urihe.8 Arihi recounted in 1891 that Hineipaketia had adopted her while she was still a suckling and took her away and reared her at Te Whakatu and Pakowhai.9 Arihi succeeded to a substantial proportion of Hineipaketia’s interests some ten years before Hineipaketia’s death. Arihi and another relative Tangatake Hapuku succeeded to the Hineipaketia’s remaining interests in the years after her death in 1891. Maori Women, Maori Marriage Customs and the Native Land Court, 1865-1909 Inano Walter A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 2017 Created 16/10/2017 ii Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate and identify the effects the Native Land Court and native land legislation had on customary Māori marriage practices from 1865 to 1909. While researchers have produced a variety of important understandings of the court’s role in promoting land loss in Māori society, Māori women’s involvement in the court and its effects upon them is just beginning to be examined. This thesis makes a contribution to Māori women’s history by accounting for the role the Native Land Court and associated land legislation played in reshaping customary Māori marriage practices in nineteenth and early twentieth century New Zealand. Even though native land legislation was one of the key mechanisms by which the state governed Māori land as well as marriage, this connection is rarely examined within the same frame. The Native Land Court is a forum where land and marriage did interact. Focusing on a case study of Ngāti Kahungunu, I situate prominent Māori women in the Native Land Court, and use their experiences to further understandings of how Māori marriage, which is often examined in a pre-European context, was shaped by land title investigations and succession cases. This study was conducted utilising statutes, colonial newspapers and the Napier Minute Books. In the first chapter, this thesis uses ethnographic material to describe and interpret marriage customs prior to European contact, its draws upon missionary understandings of customary marriage upon arrival to Aotearoa, and also traces how colonial law managed marriage prior to the Native Land Court 1865.

    William Colenso’s Māori-English Lexicon by Charlotte Frances Thompson Darling A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Victoria University of Wellington (2018) 1 Abstract William Colenso, one of Victorian New Zealand’s most accomplished polymaths, is remembered best as a printer, a defrocked missionary, botanist, and politician. Up till now, his role as a lexicographer has been largely neglected. His major biographies touch only briefly on his attempt to compile a Māori- English dictionary while Colenso himself spent 30 years on this project. His Lexicon, published the year before his death, is only the incomplete letter A of Māori to English and a handful of pages of English to Māori. The neglect by Colenso’s biographers is a surprising omission given the length of time Colenso spent on his Lexicon, the amount of extant material that relates to it, and the richness of the Lexicon itself as a resource. This thesis asks what William Colenso’s Maori-English Lexicon contribute to our understanding of Colenso’s life, and about the history of language in New Zealand? In chapter one, a brief outline of Colenso’s roles as a missionary, a botanist, a school inspector and a politician establish important biographical context for considering his attempt to compile a Lexicon. The main resource drawn upon is the 30 years’ worth of correspondence between Colenso and the New Zealand government relating to the Lexicon, which affords an overview of the project. The Lexicon itself is a rich resource.

A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History at Massey University Manawatū, New Zealand Michael Allan Hunter 2019 i Abstract In 1820s and 1830s Māori from Central Hawke’s Bay came into contact with Pākehā for the first time and they began to trade. From this contact they began to see the benefits of Pākehā. So they requested the government to establish a Pākehā settlement and offered land for sale. Land was purchased at Waipukurau on 4 November 1851. Donald McLean made sweeping promises of benefits and riches when the deed was signed however these benefits and riches would never come to the Māori of Central Hawke’s Bay. The Waipukurau purchase opened the door for more purchases. The Māori of Central Hawke’s Bay began alienating their land. First through direct purchasing with Donald McLean then through the Native Land Court. Māori would soon find themselves in debt which would lead to the Hawke’s Bay Native Lands Alienation Commission 1873. Central Hawke’s Bay Māori emerged as leaders of the Repudiation Movement of the 1870s and then the Kotahitanga Māori Parliament of the 1890s in order to fight for their lost lands.

    Heritage Trails FARNDON HERITAGE TRAIL Frimley-Waitangi Tangi a Te Ruru sculpture, Whakatu Photograph: Ivan Hughes Hawke’s Bay Discover New Zealand 1 FARNDON HERITAGE TRAIL Frimley-Waitangi Introduction: The Farndon Heritage Trail takes visitors through areas that have been historically associated with the orcharding and fruitgrowing industry in Hawke’s Bay, as well as some sites of Maori significance. The route touches the Ngaruroro River in several places. This river is significant for its numerous floods and their effect on the Hastings region in its past and more recent history. The name of the Farndon Trail is taken from one of the roads in the area and its related land and building features. Farndon is a village in England where the sweetheart of a young surveyor of this local region lived. This trail traverses 22.6km and can be driven or cycled. Cumulative mileage is noted in red. The Heritage Trail starts in Hastings at the intersection of St Aubyn Street, Frimley Road and Pakowhai Road. Park on Pakowhai Road outside Hastings Girls’ High School. 1. Hastings Girls’ High School (opened March 1956) Secondary education began in Hastings over a century ago on the site of the current Hastings Boys’ High School in Karamu Road. (See Hastings Urban Drive Heritage Trail brochure) Initially this school was co-educational but due to pressure of the post-war baby boom, by 1954, a new high school became necessary. As was the fashion then, the new school on Pakowhai Road was created for girls. It was built on Plaque and one of a pair of the windows from the Williams’ homestead in the Hastings Girls’ High School hall Don Trask 2 Section of the mural on the back wall of the Don Trask Hastings Girls’ High School hall the former Frimley Estate, owned by the pioneering (James Nelson) Williams family.

    Māori Election Petitions of the 1870s: Microcosms of Dynamic Māori and Pākehā Political Forces PAERAU WARBRICK Abstract Māori election petitions to the 1876 Eastern Māori and the 1879 Northern Māori elections were high-stakes political manoeuvres. The outcomes of such challenges were significant in the weighting of political power in Wellington. This was a time in New Zealand politics well before the formation of political parties. Political alignments were defined by a mixture of individual charismatic men with a smattering of provincial sympathies and individual and group economic interests. Larger-than-life Māori and Pākehā political characters were involved in the election petitions, providing a window not only into the complex Māori political relationships involved, but also into the stormy Pākehā political world of the 1870s. And this is the great lesson about election petitions. They involve raw politics, with all the political theatre and power play, which have as much significance in today’s politics as they did in the past. Election petitions are much more than legal challenges to electoral races. There are personalities involved, and ideological stances between the contesting individuals and groups that back those individuals. Māori had to navigate both the Pākehā realm of central and provincial politics as well as the realm of Māori kin-group politics at the whānau, hapū and iwi levels of Māoridom. The political complexities of these 1870s Māori election petitions were but a microcosm of dynamic Māori and Pākehā political forces in New Zealand society at the time. At Waitetuna, not far from modern day Raglan in the Waikato area, the Māori meeting house was chosen as one of the many polling booths for the Western Māori electorate in the 1908 general election.1 At 10.30 a.m.
