NATURAL MONUMENTS: RETHINKING ARBOREAL HERITAGE FOR TWENTY-FIRST-CENTURY AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND Susette Goldsmith A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2018 ABSTRACT The twenty-first century is imposing significant challenges on nature in general with the arrival of climate change, and on arboreal heritage in particular through pressures for building expansion. This thesis examines the notion of tree heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand at this current point in time and questions what it is, how it comes about, and what values, meanings and understandings and human and non-human forces are at its heart. While the acknowledgement of arboreal heritage can be regarded as the duty of all New Zealanders, its maintenance and protection are most often perceived to be the responsibility of local authorities and heritage practitioners. This study questions the validity of the evaluation methods currently employed in the tree heritage listing process, tree listing itself, and the efficacy of tree protection provisions. The thesis presents a multiple case study of discrete sites of arboreal heritage that are all associated with a single native tree species—karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus). The focus of the case studies is not on the trees themselves, however, but on the ways in which the tree sites fill the heritage roles required of them entailing an examination of the complicated networks of trees, people, events, organisations, policies and politics situated within the case studies, and within arboreal heritage itself. Accordingly, the thesis adopts a critical theoretical perspective, informed by various interpretations of Actor Network Theory and Assemblage Theory, and takes a ‘counter-’approach to the authorised heritage discourse introducing a new notion of an ‘unauthorised arboreal heritage discourse’. -

ESSENTIAL Questions What is a whale? Many populations remain endangered. National and intergovernmental organizations collaborate to establish Whales are mammals; they breathe air and live their and enforce regulations that protect whale populations, whole lives in water. Over the Years
OVER THE YEARS A HISTORY OF THE RURAL COMMUNITY HALLS IN THE ROTORUA DISTRICT FOREWORD Nau mai, Haere mai, There are nine rural community halls in the Rotorua District, at Broadlands, Kaharoa, Mamaku, Ngakuru, Ngongotaha, Okareka, Reporoa, Rerewhakaaitu, and Waikite. Volunteers have driven the development and maintenance of these vital community facilities, which have been the focus for community functions and gatherings for many years. In 2001, Rotorua District Council awarded certificates of appreciation to many of these volunteers for their tireless efforts to sustain the upkeep of their local halls. This booklet was commissioned by the District Council to record the history of Rotorua’s rural halls, for both archival and community interest. Information was compiled in the latter months of 2002 by Marlana Maru, a Year 2 Bachelor of Applied Social Science student from the Waiariki Institute of Technology. RDC Social Research Officer Paul Killerby undertook additional editing and formatting. Marlana and I would like to thank the many local informants whose memories and impressions contributed to this booklet. Reilly Tēnā koutou katoa, Kia orana kōtou katoatoa, Tangi kē, Welcome and Good Evening. This lecture presents the views of someone anthropologists call a participant-observer, and Māori characterise as a Pākehā, a manuhiri (guest, visitor), or a tangata kē (stranger); the latter two terms contrast with the permanence of the indigenous people, the tangata whenua (people of the land). All of us in this auditorium affiliate to one of these two categories, tangata kē and tangata whenua; sometimes to both. We are all inheritors of a particular history of British colonisation that unfolded within these lands from the 1800s (a legacy that Hone Tuwhare describes as ‘Victoriana-Missionary fog hiding legalized land-rape / and gentlemen thugs’).1 This legalized violation undermined the hospitality and respect assumed between tangata whenua and tangata kē. -

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate Māori economic development opportunities in tourism. Many of which are intrinsically linked to cultural identity (Te Awekotuku, 1981; Ryan, 2002). This study aims to demonstrate that Māori notions of cultural identity are not confined to connections to geographical place alone. Cultural identity are socially created spaces dependent on relationships of people to each other and to iconic cultural references existent in both physical and metaphysical representation. The study will examine the history of Hinemihi, a whare tipuna that was situated at Te Wairoa, Tarawera until the eruption of 1886. She was built in response to the burgeoning tourism trade and she is now situated at Clandon Park, London. Clandon Park is a quintessential English estate, now also a tourist destination. Embedded in her history are significant periods of change for Māori. The study will investigate her relationships with Tuhourangi and Ngāti Hinemihi in her early years through to her relationship with Ngāti Ranana now. Also how she has linked people through whakapapa and now contemporary notions of identity. A THESIS PRESENTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION AT MASSEY UNIVERSITY, PALMERSTON NORTH, NEW ZEALAND. JAMES PHILIP HECTOR GRAHAM 2009 i ABSTRACT The thesis examines the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement by exploring the whakapapa of Te Aute College and the brand that has developed out of the school’s whakapapa from its beginnings in 1854 prior to major European settlement in the Hawkes Bay through to the 21st century. In doing so, the notion of whakapapa is used to reveal the layers of tradition, history, connections, narratives, achievements and setbacks that have enabled the realisation of Māori potential and the ability of Te Aute College to sustain a contribution to the advancement of Māori. This thesis contends that the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement stems from its whakapapa and its brand that is unequivocally Te Aute in focus and character. An Indigenous Māori research paradigm, a whakapapa research methodology, provides the context for researching Te Aute College, the basis of this thesis. The thesis also explores whakapapa as a tool that can be used as a legitimate research framework when engaging in Māori research. -

This activity in the Marine Department and elsewhere followed earlier intensive work on the humpback whale in Victoria University of Wellington. As the humpback industry declined attention turned to the sperm whale. Substantial field studies of this species in local waters were made by the Marine Department. At the same time there has been a steady increase in the data available on strandings of the smaller whales. The circumstances make it appropriate to provide a handbook of the whale species fo-und in New Zealand waters. This bulletin is presented as a review of the available taxonomic and ecological data and not as a systematic revision of the group.
