On cycling paths, Villabassa/ cycle routes or small side roads you will experience different regions Dobbiaco and lots of outstanding natural and cultural beauties. In Innsbruck, you Rio di Pusteria can still enjoy the view of the mountains of the northern range before Cortina heading through the increasingly narrow valley to the Brenner Pass d‘Ampezzo at an altitude of 1,370 m. The view sweeps south and the vegetation changes. The first apple trees are already growing in the area around ITALY Longarone Mühlbach. The climate is also becoming milder. Conegliano CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROUTE Treviso This cycling tour is a varied tour. The most demanding stages over the TSF VCE Alps (Innsbruck – Brenner) can be shortened by train or bus and the Venice/ stage from Dobbiaco to Cortina d’Ampezzo leads easily along the cycle Mestre path on the old railway trail. The last two days are downhill and flat towards the sea. The tour is suitable for children over 16 years. self-guided tour bicycle holiday DIFFICULTY: easy DURATION: 9 days / 8 nights DISTANCE: approx. 345 km Alps 2 Adria Touristik OG Bahnhofplatz 2, 9020 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee • Carinthia, Austria • +43 677 62642760 • [email protected] • www.alps2adria.info INNSBRUCK – VENICE Page 2 of 4 A DAY BY DAY ACCOUNT OF THE ROUTE Day 1: Arrival Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Innsbruck. Day 2: Innsbruck – Rio di Pusteria (approx. 55 km + train or bus) You leave Tyrol’s capital Innsbruck. The demanding part from Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass, border between Austria and Italy and at the same time watershed and cultural axis, will be done by transfer (train or bus). Only a few buildings remind of the former bor- der between the two European countries. From the Brenner Pass you cycle along the old railway track to Vipiteno and further on to Fortezza and Rio di Pusteria. Day 3: Rio di Pusteria – Villabassa / Dobbiaco (approx. 50 – 55 km) From Rio di Pusteria a well-built cycling path leads you through the Puster Valley, passing the Mühlbacher Klause, a former border post. Once it was an antique gate between the provinces Rätien and Norikum. Along the river Rienz you will arrive to Brunico. We suggest a visit of the “Volkskundemuseum” (South Tyrolean Folklore Museum) in Teodone – an open-air museum documenting rural life in South Tyrol, culture and customs. From Brunico you cycle along the cycling path along the river Rienz to Villabassa or Dob- biaco, where you will spend the night. Day 4: Niederdorf / Toblach – Cortina d‘Ampezzo (approx. 30 – 35 km) Today you follow the cycling path on the old Dolomites railway trail passing Lake Toblacher See and the War Cemetery reminding World War I. Shortly after, you will admire a unique view on the world famous “Drei Zinnen” (Three Peaks) before arriving to Lake Dürrensee. Slightly steep the cycling path leads to the border of the two provinces Bolzano and Belluno. From now on you roll com- fortably downhill direction south to the pearl of the Dolomites, Cortina d’Ampezzo with its astonishing mountain scenery. Day 5: Cortina d‘Ampezzo – Longarone (approx. 55 km) Today is slightly downhill again, a large part still on the old railway trail – on your left the massif of Sorapis, on your right the massif “Cinque Torri” (five towers). Through the Boite Valley you cycle direction south to Pieve di Cadore. On the newly upgraded cycle path you head to Longarone. This town was completely rebuilt in 1963 after a landslide at the former Vajont damm, above the village caused a huge flood. Day 6: Longarone – Conegliano (approx. 55 km) On the cycle path you follow the course of the Piave river before it changes direction at the village of Ponte nelle Alpi and runs to the right. The name translates as “bridge in the Alps”. Through the Alpago region, the route takes you past Lake Santa Croce to Conegli- ano. Together with Valdobbiadene, it forms the home of Prosecco and is home to the traditional Conegliano School of Viticulture. The town of Conegliano is located at the foot of the Colli Veneti on the Monticano river. In the historic centre on Via XX Settembre is also the castle with the town museum. Day 7: Conegliano – Treviso (approx. 50 km) You leave the Alps behind you and cycle relaxed through the plain to Treviso, the city of waterways and fashion. Along the way, you can admire the villas of the Italian master builder Palladio, who completed his magnificent buildings here, in the immediate sphere of influence of the maritime power of Venice. Day 8: Treviso – Venice mainland / Mestre (approx. 45 km) Sile river remains your faithful companion direction Adriatic Sea to Venice mainland / Mestre from where you can start your explo- ration of the “Serenissima”. Day 9: Departure Individual departure or possibility to extend your stay. • Baroque Architecture in the Former Habsburg Residences of Graz and Innsbruck
EMBODIMENTS OF POWER? Baroque Architecture in the Former Habsburg Residences of Graz and Innsbruck Mark Hengerer Introduction Having overcome the political, religious, and economic crisis of the Thirty Years' War, princes in central Europe started to reconstruct their palaces and build towns as monuments of power. Baroque residences such as Karlsruhe combine the princely palace with the city, and even the territory, and were considered para digms of rule in the age of absolutism.' In Austrian Vienna, both the nobility and the imperial family undertook reshaping the city as a baroque residence only after the second Ottoman siege in 1683. Despite the Reichsstif of Emperor Karl VI, the baroque parts of the Viennese Hofburg and the baroque summer residence of Sch6nbrunn were executed as the style itself was on the wane, and were still incomplete in the Enlightenment period.2 It may be stated, then, that the com plex symbolic setting of baroque Viennese architecture reveals the complex power relations between the House of Habsburg and the nobility, who together formed a SOft of "diarchy," so that the Habsburgs did not exercise absolutist rule. 3 Ad ditionally, it cannot be overlooked that the lower nobility and burghers, though hardly politically influential, imitated the new style, which was of course by no means protected by any sort of copyright.4 For all these reasons, reading baroque cities as embodiments of powers is prob lematic. Such a project is faced with a phenomenon situated between complex actual power relations and a more or less learned discourse on princely power and 10 architecture (which was part of the art realm as well), and princes, noblemen, and citizens inspired to build in the baroque style.
