  • Baroque Architecture in the Former Habsburg Residences of Graz and Innsbruck
EMBODIMENTS OF POWER? Baroque Architecture in the Former Habsburg Residences of Graz and Innsbruck Mark Hengerer Introduction Having overcome the political, religious, and economic crisis of the Thirty Years' War, princes in central Europe started to reconstruct their palaces and build towns as monuments of power. Baroque residences such as Karlsruhe combine the princely palace with the city, and even the territory, and were considered para digms of rule in the age of absolutism.' In Austrian Vienna, both the nobility and the imperial family undertook reshaping the city as a baroque residence only after the second Ottoman siege in 1683. Despite the Reichsstif of Emperor Karl VI, the baroque parts of the Viennese Hofburg and the baroque summer residence of Sch6nbrunn were executed as the style itself was on the wane, and were still incomplete in the Enlightenment period.2 It may be stated, then, that the com plex symbolic setting of baroque Viennese architecture reveals the complex power relations between the House of Habsburg and the nobility, who together formed a SOft of "diarchy," so that the Habsburgs did not exercise absolutist rule. 3 Ad ditionally, it cannot be overlooked that the lower nobility and burghers, though hardly politically influential, imitated the new style, which was of course by no means protected by any sort of copyright.4 For all these reasons, reading baroque cities as embodiments of powers is prob lematic. Such a project is faced with a phenomenon situated between complex actual power relations and a more or less learned discourse on princely power and 10 architecture (which was part of the art realm as well), and princes, noblemen, and citizens inspired to build in the baroque style.

CHURCH, STATE, AND THE “HABITUS OF RESISTANCE” Power and weakness of the Catholic Church in Carinthia, especially in the Austrofascist Era 1933–1938 Johannes Thonhauser UDK 322(436.5)”1933/1938”329 329.18:26(436.5)”1933/1938” 1. Introduction Historians claim that among the Austrian federal states Carinthia underwent an exceptional development.1 Its political and social structures are extraor- dinary: Nowhere else in Austria the conflict with a minority (the Slovene speaking Carinthians), was (and maybe still is) more troublesome than in Carinthia. Before 1938, in no other Austrian province the rate of participants of the illegal NSDAP was as high as in Carinthia.2 Until today, the political landscape in Carinthia has been a special one: There are strong right–wing parties and powerful Social Democrats; all of them having a strong anticleri- cal tradition.3 At the same time, the People’s Party with its catholic origins is traditionally weak. Moreover, Carinthia has the highest rate of “illegitimate” children in Austria.4 All these developments have been examined several times. This paper refers to the role of the church in context of these developments. Although most people do have a strong connection to tradition, nevertheless the church is weak in Carinthia — in comparison to other rural Austrian federal states, like Lower Austria or the Tyrol, where the church is still relatively strong. Empirical data for Carinthia5 show a quite strong distrust in clerical * Johannes Thonhauser, E–Mail: johannes.thonhauser@kath–kirche–kaernten.at Katholis- che Pädagogische Hochschuleinrichtung Kärnten 1 Cf. 26th SESSION OF EIFAC Zagreb, Croatia, 17-20 May 2010 Hotel International 1 Miramarska 24, Zagreb 10000, Croatia, Phone: (+385)(1) 6108800 (http://www.hotel-international.hr/?l=en) GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ZAGREB Welcome to Zagreb, the capital city of the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is an old Central European city. For centuries it has been a focal point of culture and science, and now of commerce and industry as well. It lies on the intersection of important routes between the Adriatic coast and Central Europe. When the Croatian people achieved their independence in 1991, Zagreb became a capital - a political and administrative centre for the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is also the hub of the business, academic, cultural, artistic and sporting worlds in Croatia. Many famed scientists, artists and athletes come from the city, or work in it. Zagreb can offer its visitors the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper Town, picturesque open-air markets, diverse shopping facilities, an abundant selection of crafts and a choice vernacular cuisine. Zagreb is a city of green parks and walks, with many places to visit in the beautiful surroundings. The city entered into the third millennium with a population of one million. In spite of the rapid development of the economy and transportation, it has retained its charm, and a relaxed feeling that makes it a genuinely human city. 1 The booking form for this hotel is also posted on the website together with all the other meeting information.
