Basques in the Americas from 1492 To1892: a Chronology
Basques in the Americas From 1492 to1892: A Chronology “Spanish Conquistador” by Frederic Remington Stephen T. Bass Most Recent Addendum: May 2010 FOREWORD The Basques have been a successful minority for centuries, keeping their unique culture, physiology and language alive and distinct longer than any other Western European population. In addition, outside of the Basque homeland, their efforts in the development of the New World were instrumental in helping make the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America what they are today. Most history books, however, have generally referred to these early Basque adventurers either as Spanish or French. Rarely was the term “Basque” used to identify these pioneers. Recently, interested scholars have been much more definitive in their descriptions of the origins of these Argonauts. They have identified Basque fishermen, sailors, explorers, soldiers of fortune, settlers, clergymen, frontiersmen and politicians who were involved in the discovery and development of the Americas from before Columbus’ first voyage through colonization and beyond. This also includes generations of men and women of Basque descent born in these new lands. As examples, we now know that the first map to ever show the Americas was drawn by a Basque and that the first Thanksgiving meal shared in what was to become the United States was actually done so by Basques 25 years before the Pilgrims. We also now recognize that many familiar cities and features in the New World were named by early Basques. These facts and others are shared on the following pages in a chronological review of some, but by no means all, of the involvement and accomplishments of Basques in the exploration, development and settlement of the Americas. -

El Gobierno Vasco, por Decreto del Departamento de Trabajo y Justicia 52/2019, de 26 de marzo («Boletín Oficial del País Vasco» número 63, de 1 de abril de 2019) y en aplicación del artículo 12 del Estatuto de Autonomía del País Vasco y del artículo 37.2 del Real Decreto Legislativo 2/2015, de 23 de octubre («BOE» 255 de 24 de octubre) que aprueba el Texto Refundido del Estatuto de los Trabajadores, ha aprobado el Calendario Oficial de Fiestas Laborales de la Comunidad Autónoma de Euskadi para el año 2020. Niphargus ciliatuscis montanus Margalef, 1952, a poorly described and scarcely known taxon from the Cueva de Guesaltza (= Gesaltza) Cave, Guipuzcoa (= Gipuzkoa), Aranzazu (= Arantzazu), N Spain, is redescribed and figured here from new localities of N Spain. Based on relevant taxonomical characters, it is elevated to the rank of distinct species, Niphargus cismontanus Margalef, 1952. Its taxonomical characters and relation to some other Niphargus species from Spain and France are discussed. Se analizarán, igualmente, las sanciones, castigos y acciones punitivas puestas en marcha, no solo como un mecanismo sancionador, sino también recuperador del individuo disidente o desviado. Résumé: Cet article vise à analyser le contrôle social et la répression de certains crimes sexuels (concubinage, promiscuité sexue - lle et prostitution) au cours de l'Ancien Régime dans le cadre géographique du Merindad de Durango (Biscaye), où se trouvaient les per - sonnes persécutées et punies pour avoir remis en question des modèles de comportement sexuel établis et acceptés par les élites dirigeantes. Les sanctions, punitions et actions punitives mises en place seront également analysées, non seulement en tant que mécanisme de sanction, mais aussi en tant que récupération de l'individu dissident ou déviant. -
The Vision of a Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao
HARVARD DESIGN SCHOOL THE VISION OF A GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM IN BILBAO In a March 31, 1999 article, the Washington Post? posed the following question: "Can a single building bring a whole city back to life? More precisely, can a single modern building designed for an abandoned shipyard by a laid-back California architect breath new economic and cultural life into a decaying industri- al city in the Spanish rust belt?" Still, the issues addressed by the article illustrate only a small part of the multifaceted Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao. A thorough study of how this building was conceived and made reveals equally significant aspects such as getting the best from the design architect, the master handling of the project by an inexperienced owner, the pivotal role of the executive architect-project man- ager, the dependence on local expertise for construction, the transformation of the architectural profession by information technology, the budgeting and scheduling of an unprecedented project without sufficient information.
