With an end to the pandeMic Finally in sight, the band has rebranded itself as “Us” and they look Forward to resuMing the loud, rooF-raising concerts that have Marked theM as a band to watch. For their First release as Us, the band Found inspiration in the CaliFornian musical subculture of the early 1980s known as the Paisley Underground. ItselF a direct revival of the acid-drenched ‘60s, the MoveMent was spearheaded by such college radio bands as The Bangles, The DreaM Syndicate, Green on Red, The Long Ryders, The Rain Parade, The Three O’Clock, and True West. With its heavy droning guitars, crisp drumMing, and punkish lead vocal, Us’ “Paisley Underground” is a worthy new addition to the canon. “’Paisley Underground’ was written last February aFter a concert in Manchester,” said vocalist/guitarist Teo Hirvonen. “We were sitting in a hostel lobby reading about the bushFires in Australia and the outbreak oF the pandeMic in China. The video was filMed in Helsinki in winter during lockdown. Hirvonen, the main songwriter in the group, is joined by his brothers Pan Hirvonen (harMonica) and Max Somerjoki (guitar, vocals), alongside Henri Lintula (druMs) and RasMus Ruonakoski (bass). ThePsycheDeliaSmithPaisleyHeadArtSchools Alan Dunn Summer of love August 1967: During the first four days of the month, a depression moves from the Atlantic across Scotland to the North Sea. It is rather cool over most of the United Kingdom during these four days, with occasional rain giving way to thundery showers and long sunny periods on the 4th. (Monthly Weather Report of the Meteorological Office, Volume 84 Number 8). I am born in Glasgow on that 4th August 1967. Mix up the 1967 Summer of Love and it sounds like Are You Heart Pepper's Lonely Piper Club Band at the Gates of Dawn Experienced and feels like The 13th Strawberry Monkees Airplane Alarm Clock Boxtops, but it takes me 13 years to be bitten by the psychedelic bug when fellow pupil Graeme Ainslie (RIP) starts bringing weird records to music class: Velvet Underground, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Doors, The Teardrop Explodes, The Fall, The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen. I can draw, so he lends me these records to copy the sleeves and I sneak a listen to each and every one. They aren’t singing about our grey east end of Glasgow but instead The Slide Machine, The End or Villiers Terrace, times and spaces that exist only in their addled minds. I don’t do the LSD, dope, magic mushrooms or pass-out games of the times but through primal fanzines of Lindsay Hutton in grey Grangemouth followed by the visceral trippy recommendations of Edwin Pouncey aka Savage Pencil in Sounds, I get The Paisley Underground infection instead.

  • The First Thing I Thought When I Was Offered
The Popular Music Project: Listening Party at LACE Sept. 16, 2008 The Paisley Underground Notes by Alejandro Cohen The first thing I thought when I was offered to host the Paisley Underground listening party was: "What makes me qualified to do this?" after all, I was only 10 years old by the time the movement as it's known now was over. And even worse, I wasn't even born or raised in Los Angeles!!! Let alone the US. So again, what makes me qualified to do this presentation? I find it funny that someone like me, being a foreigner, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is doing a presentation about a local group of friends, colleagues and bandmates that at some point connected, played and wrote songs together at a special time and place in music history. But I guess it is not uncommon for a person to go to a foreign land and find something that locals take for granted fascinating, and appreciate how amazing that something is. My first exposure to what is called Paisley Underground was in 1996, when I first moved to Los Angeles. A friend of mine owned a record by Kendra Smith, The Guild of Temporal Adventurers. And although that record technically is not a Paisley Underground record, I found the sound so unique and at the same time so connected to everything I liked, that I made it a point to find out more about who was behind this. You have to remember that this was 1996. I didn't own a computer, and the Intemet was something that only a couple of people I knew had access to.

INDIE ROCK SUBCULTURE: HAMILTON AS MICROCOSM INDIE ROCK SUBCULTURE: HAMILTON AS MICROCOSM By KATHLEEN DAVIES, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Kathleen Davies, April 2006 MASTER OF ARTS (2006) McMaster University (Music Criticism) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Indie Rock Subculture: Hamilton as Microcosm AUTHOR: Kathleen Davies, B.A. (McMaster University) NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 123 11 ABSTRACT In recent years, interest in the indie rock subculture has exploded, both in the popular press and among popular music scholars and culture theorists. This is an ethnographic study of the indie rock scene in Hamilton, Ontario. Hamilton represents a microcosm of what is happening in other local indie scenes. The geographical, historical and cultural locality of Hamilton creates a sense of shared identity among individuals connected by the common interest in indie rock. This study focuses on how independent rock's network of social practices and economic institutions works to locate subjects within Hamilton's local network while connecting them to the larger framework of interlocal scenes. Aspects of the local and interlocal are explored through narratives of indie aesthetics, style, fashion, institutions, cultural practices, authenticity and investment. Cultural practices, including the production and consumption of indie rock are examined through the lens of Bourdieu' s concept of cultural capital, which exposes constructions and configurations of class, generation, ethnicity, and gender. 111 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thank you to: Dr. Susan Fast for her encouragement to pursue my Masters degree. Dr. Christina Baade. As my supervisor of research, her guidance and encouragement helped ensure this project came to fruition.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.
