Welcome Aboard ! By Maria Pedulla, Customer Service

Imagine coming off a two week shift at the mine and checking in at our airline counter, only to be advised that your flight has been delayed or even cancelled due to weather. This situation can be as stressful for everyone involved including our passenger service agents, reservation agents, flight crew and of course, our passengers. Bad weather can have far reaching consequences with an airline’s route schedule. When crews and planes are stranded at one and do not arrive at subsequent , a ripple effect occurs. A late or cancelled flight departing Kapuskasing first thing in the morning, can affect a departure later in the day from Red Lake where the weather is clear; as most aircraft flow through the system and have a direct effect on down line performance. Our geographical position offers some challenging weather, and disruptions ranging from fog, freezing rain, and gusting winds to white out blizzards. To minimize any potential inconvenience or if you are anticipating flight disruptions due to weather; please keep the following in mind. Check the weather forecast before you leave home, the job site or the office. It’s always a good idea to check the forecast for your departure and destination city. Remember that bad weather there affects flight status here. Check flight status early and often. If you anticipate a delay, call our toll free Reservation Centre (1-800-465-2327) to confirm your departure time. Just because you are advised your flight is on time at 10:00 am, does not mean that it will be, thirty minutes later. Don’t stray too far from the gate. If you’re already at the airport, gate agents may make important announcements concerning flight status. Make sure you or someone in your travelling party stays near your gate to hear those announcements. Provide your cell phone number at the time of booking. Often when a reservation is made with a travel agency, the travellers contact number is not included in the file. If we are aware of delays or cancellations sufficiently in advance, we try to contact our passengers. Please ensure that your travel agency includes your cell phone when making your reservation and be sure to check for messages prior to departing for the airport. Consider purchasing Interline E-tickets (IET’s) when connecting to other airlines. Use Interline E-Tickets when connecting between Bearskin Airlines and Air or Delta Airlines. Interline E-Tickets provide for enhanced communication between airlines related to ticket status. This is especially convenient when connections are jeopardized due to inclement weather as IET’s permit the interline airlines involved to reprotect passengers on each other’s flights without penalty. In the case of last-minute cancellations, we will rebook you on the next flight with available seats, or cancel the ticket and refund it to Travel Bank, if you choose not to travel. If we are aware of potential weather issues at a down line station, we will advise local boarding passengers who then can choose to board or not, and accept responsibility for their own meals or hotels. In cases where connecting passengers have not been advised of potential weather interruptions prior to boarding their first leg of the journey, we may provide meal vouchers, hotel accommodations and transportation between airport and hotel arising from significant delays or cancellations. Above all, we ask that you try to exercise patience when inclement weather is involved. We can assure you that we are doing all we can to get you on your way as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support!

Bear Country In-Flight Magazine 5 With this issue, Bear Country proudly celebrates its 20TH Anniversary since the inaugural issue. These past years have been truly gratifying as our continued success has enabled us to grow and set even higher goals for the New Year.

The focus of the magazine has always been the people, places and events in “Bear Country,” promoting tourism and education to our readers about the cities that Bearskin Airlines serves. With our strong northern roots and in recognition of our First Nations customers we have featured an Aboriginal-related story in every issue.

The seatback presentation of the magazine targets a unique audience of people on the move in and Manitoba. Our airline caters to the needs of the business traveller and there is no better medium available to talk directly to them.

For added value, Bear Country can also be read online from any home or office computer as well as certain handheld devices. Each issue is now digitized into a Flash page flip book that can be viewed from any web page. To view back issues, visit www.bearskinairlines.com.

Next year promises to be exciting, as we are preparing editorial content for 2015. We welcome you to send us your ideas and suggestions. Please be sure to address them to my attention.

On behalf of everyone at Bearskin Airlines and Bear Country, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the support that has been given since our inaugural issue published December 1994.

Twenty years and still growing strong!

Sometimes, when people are admitted to the hospital for an acute illness, it is then discovered they are unable to return home to care for themselves. They then end up staying in hospital for a long period of time waiting for a long term care bed. This can result in some other patient’s non-urgent procedures being delayed as there are no beds available. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the North West Local Health Integration Network (NWLHIN) have recognized the need for more long term care beds for Sioux Lookout and our surrounding area. We believe we are on a short path to approval for these beds and hope to begin a formal campaign in the near future. We are indebted and grateful, as always, to the giving spirit of the participants and sponsors of Skip to Equip.”

The first commercial launch is planned for 2018, and the two- part testing taking place in North Bay is a key part of the company’s development cycle. Phase 1 testing involved a series of tethered drag- tests of an avionics box extended from a helicopter. The custom-built jig which held the avionics box, and will eventually hold the scale model SOAR shuttle, was skillfully manufactured by North Bay Machining Centre Inc. and was assembled by the Canadore College Aviation Campus faculty in cooperation with key members of the S3 engineering and design teams. The tests validated the avionics systems, drone systems, Guidance- Navigation-Control instruments and various sensors that will be key to the SOAR shuttle development.

One of the issues addressed in the plan is the need for affordable housing, in particular for 55-plus and assisted living. “This will be a focus for local construction in the next couple of years,” Findlay noted.

One of the city’s newer businesses is Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, opened in 2013. Located in Kenora’s historical fire hall, built in 1912, the company makes three flagship beers: Sultana Gold, Papermaker Pilsner, and Firehouse. As well there are Brewmaster Seasonal Selections, with this fall and winter’s features being Sasquatch Black Lager, Hopwork Orange, and Thumbs Up.

The building includes a 1,000-litre Kaspar Schulz brewhouse (brewery); a retail store; and a tap room and restaurant featuring a menu including gluten-free and children’s selections.

34 Bear Country In-Flight Magazine A Key Partner in Education and Training Options for Aboriginal Learners

By Heather Campbell

Opportunity awaits Aboriginal learners when they plug into distance education. When students want to remain close to family and community, online learning can bring the classroom to where they live. Contact North | Contact Nord, Ontario’s distance education and training network, has partnered with First Nation communities across the province to address the need for more education and training options.

For Chief Celia Echum of Ginoogaming First Nation, education is a key priority on her political agenda. The Ginoogaming First Nation sits on the northern shore of Long Lake, adjacent to Longlac, and 40 km east of Geraldton. There are about 160 residents living on the First Nation and for many years residents were employed in forestry at a local saw mill. When the mill shut down it had a devastating impact.

Today, attention is directed at preparing community members for the economic shift looming from the Ring of Fire projects. Elizabeth Ferris, Ontario Works administrator, likes the partnership with Contact Chief Celia Echum, Ginoogaming First Nation with North | Contact Nord because it Sylvie Lemieux, Associate Coordinator, Recruitment helps bring training for employment Training for Contact North | Contact Nord. opportunities coming to the region.

40 Bear Country In-Flight Magazine NEW BUSINESS OF the year Stanley Bluecoat Sunset Lodges Bed and Breakfast

Sunset Lodges Bed & Breakfast, now in its fourth year of operation, started with the intention of helping to address the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Innininuwug First Nation shortfall with accommodation.

In 2011, Stanley proposed an adventure to build a three bedroom lodge in the community. The project started with the support of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation, creditors and lenders, and with a heavy investment from Stanley. The company jumped into the unknown and where others had mostly failed in the past.

Business went so well in the first two years of operation that Stanley decided to expand and in 2013, he opened a six bedroom building to the public.

Stanley’s extreme hard work, and personality to match, Sunset Lodges has received acclamation and is the only accommodation provider in Kitchenuuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation.

Sunset Lodges Bed & Breakfast has provided accommodations to many visiting VIP’s over the past four years, including a Royal Visit from the Countess of Wessex, wife of Prince Edward, the youngest son of the Queen and Prince Philip. Stanley is proud to have hosted such a distinguished guest since this was the first royal visit since the signing of the Treaty in 1929.

50 Bear Country In-Flight Magazine THANK YOU.

Atikokan Generating Station is now the largest 100 per cent biomass-fueled power plant in North America. That’s quite an accomplishment: Shutting down the use of coal and converting this important public asset to produce clean electricity. Thank you to our employees. You did it safely, on time and on budget. And thanks to the community of Atikokan. Together, we’ve made history, helped tackle climate change, and spurred a new biomass industry in the North. We could not be more proud. OPG – Ontario’s clean power generator.
