INTRODUCTION

ioux Lookout is located halfway between and Winnipeg, north of the Trans‐ Canada Highway, sitting nestled on the lakeshores of Pelican, Abram and with the Srugged Canadian Shield as the backdrop. This scenic municipality boasts a culturally diverse population of over 5,500 residents and is proud to be the true "Hub of the North", providing essential services to 30,000 people in 29 remote First Nation communities. Sioux Lookout is a renowned, year‐round tourist destination. Visitors and residents alike take advantage of a wide variety of outdoor recreational and sporting opportunities including water sports, hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and incredible fishing. The area has been on a major growth curve with $250 million in capital projects recently completed, including a new state‐of‐the‐art Hospital, Heritage Railway Station Redevelopment, Downtown Revitalization, MNR Fire Management Centre, Expansion, and an increase in serviced residential, commercial and industrial land. 2.1 Population Size and Growth

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout has had population growth of 1.7% over the past two census (10‐year period). The following table presents the population size according to the census, as well as current and projected population estimates Table 3: Census Population Over Time and Projected Growth

2.2 Age Profile

Over the past three census periods, Sioux Lookout has seen a rise in persons aged 25 to 39, as well as a rise in persons aged 55 and over (Figure 3). In 2017, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout had a younger population than the province. Table 4 shows a smaller portion of the population in Sioux Lookout (13%) is 65 or older, compared to the province (18%).

2.3 Language Characteristics

Table 5 indicates nearly 95% of the residents in Sioux Lookout speak English only, which is above the provincial figure (86%). Approximately 5% of the population in the Municipality speaks both English and French.

2.4 Mobility Characteristics

Table 6 indicates that residents in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout are more likely to change place of residence within five years, compared to the province. 2.5 Level of Education

Figure 4 and Table 7 indicate the level of educational attainment for persons aged 25 to 64 in 2017:  Over 60% of residents in Sioux Lookout (compared to 65% in Ontario) have a post secondary education  Sioux Lookout has more (31%) College, CEGEP or other non‐university certificates, compared to Ontario (25%).  Sioux Lookout has more apprenticeship or trades certificates/diplomas, compared to the province.

2.6 Income

Table 8 illustrates the 20196 individual income levels for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. Approximately 59% of the Sioux Lookout population earns below $50,000 annually, compared to 67% in Ontario. The municipality’s residents also enjoy higher median and average income, compared to the provincial figures. Tables 9 presents employment income statistics for the municipality. The following important conclusions can be drawn from Table 9:  Sioux Lookout median employment income is 24% higher than the rest of the province  Sioux Lookout average employment income is 3.2% lower than the provincial figure  Males in Sioux Lookout earn an average income 11% higher than females. Comparatively, males in Ontario earn an average income 41% higher than females. Tables 14 and 1510 provide information on persons reporting a “usual place of work other than in their home or outside of Canada”, and reveal the following regarding labour force commuting:  1% Percent of residents that commute to a usual place of work declared a place of work outside of Sioux Lookout (i.e. City of Dryden).  11% Percent of workers in town are non‐residents, and commute to work in Sioux Lookout.  Sioux Lookout attracts workers primarily from Dryden, Thunder Bay, and reserve.

4.1 Highways

Major arterial highways serving the region:  Highway 72 runs southwest to northeast and links Sioux Lookout south to Highway 17 at Dinorwic, and north to Highway 599, via Highway 516.  Highway 642 runs southeast and connects Sioux Lookout to Highway 599 at Silver Dollar.  Highway 17, 69 kms from Sioux Lookout, runs west to east and connects to Dryden and Thunder Bay.  The nearest four lane highway is Highway 400 in Parry Sound. It is approximately 1,507 kms from Sioux Lookout and runs northwest to southeast into Toronto.
