Studbook breeding report 2010-2011 – Cuora amboinensis

Introduction

For this year 12 died. New breeding’s, 4, have been reported from 1 location. The high number of died animals is mostly caused by a personal problem with one keeper for which all animals, 10 in total, died together with all his other animals. The number of locations (20), animals (86) and breeding’s (4) is decreasing. The main reason is the lack of interest in Cuora amboinensis. Some locations and numbers of animals are unsure because of no contacts.

Four different subspecies are known (amboinensis, couro, kamaroma and lineate). Except lineata, all subspecies are present in the studbook. Far the most of them are subspecie kamaroma followed by amboinensis. From subspecie couro one breeding is reported! The other breeding belongs to kamaroma just as the years before.

The ESF studbook received several international requests about determining sub of Cuora amboinensis.

Still some people are looking for adult Cuora’s but only the sub specie couro and some female amboinensis. Animals offered are mainly kamaroma and male amboinensis. This is exactly the same as the years before.

Discussion

The number of locations and the number of animals is changing. This is due to contacts with studbook members. There is a stable group of members and a bigger group of members with less interest. It’s really difficult to contact them and to get information. The studbook is really serious thinking of separating the studbook members in a serious group and an interest group. The studbook will focus on the serious group.

At the moment there are still many problems with people looking for (sub)species of Cuora amboinensis. Finally, when some animals are offered, they’re not interested anymore. Because of this problem it’s almost impossible to find new locations for offered animals. As mentioned in the introduction the offered animals are all kamaroma and male amboinensis, this in contrast to the people looking for couro and female amboinensis.

A strong selection of members of the studbook is needed. The main reason is to create a selection of (only?) active participants. The reason is some participants once participated within the studbook but afterwards there was a lack of information send by them and they never answered questions by the studbook(keeper).

Maybe the studbook should be split in a formal studbook containing only active participants and a separate list of non-active persons.

------

This will be the last studbook report by Merijn Kerlen. After 13 years it’s time to spend my spare time on other activities. I will be involved on advising, especially about determination of subspecies but no longer as studbook keeper and contact person for this studbook.
