COME TO CAMPUS

Think Globally. Learn Locally.

Brisk fall days are meant for campus life. Set your mind in motion and meet others who are intellectually curious like yourself. Experience the pure joy of learning; no tests, no grades! Light lunch is included.

The Relevance Of Local Politics In A 21st Century Globalized World Our public affairs have never been more connected with the rest of the world and its increasingly global economy. Does this mean local politics have outlived their relevance? As residents of Monmouth County, how does our civic life fit into what’s happening throughout the world? Do we have the ability to shape global outcomes with our local decisions? Or is “Think Globally, Act Locally” a quaint relic of the past? This seminar will explore China’s development of a modern Silk Road, the trade relationships of the United States, and Brexit to demonstrate that global events are essentially, consequentially, and inexorably tied to local politics. Micah Rasmussen is the director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University. He has contributed to the public affairs of the state for more than two decades. He served as Governor James E. McGreevey’s press secretary. He also was communications director for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, worked in the New Jersey General Assembly, and managed several political campaigns.

Examining Human Rights: Think Globally, Act Locally ? Americans broadly believe in the concept of human rights. But rights, if they are truly universal, put a huge burden on our consciences: if everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, then what do we do when a dictator gasses his own people? According to the philosophy of human rights, all of us are responsible for each other’s protection, but not all of us have the actual power to do something significant about, say, the Syrian refugee crisis. Join this exploration of opportunities to combat this feeling of helplessness. Matt Hershberger is a writer, editor and human rights scholar

Additional speakers, TBD, will address mid-term election results and other current events.
