Perfect Partner
PERFECT PARTNER A film by Kim Gordon, Tony Oursler and Phil Morrison starring Michael Pitt and Jamie Bochert, with a live soundtrack performed by Kim Gordon, Jim O’Rourke, Ikue Mori, Tim Barnes and DJ Olive As a significant figure of alternative/avant-garde rock and one of the founders of Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon is a truly creative spirit. Enigmatic, iconic, original and multi- faceted, she is increasingly working in the medium of visual arts and diversifying her music projects into more experimental territory. Perfect Partner is a first time collaboration between Kim Gordon, highly renowned artist Tony Oursler and acclaimed filmmaker Phil Morrison. In a response to America’s enchantment with car culture, this surreal psychodrama-cum-road movie starring Michael Pitt (The Dreamers, Hedwig And the Angry Inch, Bully and Gus Van Sant’s upcoming Last Days) and Jamie Bochert unfolds to a thundering free rock live soundtrack. The sound world of Perfect Partner is textural improvised music breaking into occasional songs that interact with the narrative of the film. Kim Gordon is joined on stage by fellow Sonic Youth collaborator, producer extraordinaire, composer and School Of Rock collaborator Jim O’Rourke, percussionist Tim Barnes, laptop virtuoso Ikue Mori and turntablist DJ Olive. Audiences across the UK should fasten their seatbelts for an invigorating trip through live music, video and projection in this one-off cross media adventure. Gordon and Oursler’s shared fascination with the dream lifestyle promised by car manufacturers, and the aspirational language of car advert copy (selling cars as our ‘perfect partner’), provided the inspiration for this hugely inventive project. -

Jennifer Herrema on Making Stuff and Never Giving a Fuck
February 8, 2017 - Jennifer Herrema is an American musician, designer, and style icon who is best known for being one half of infamous rock band Royal Trux. In addition to playing in her own band, Black Bananas, Herrema hosts her own Dublab radio show (“The Banana Question”) and has a series of ongoing fashion collaborations happening with Feathered Fish and Hysteric Glamour. In addition to playing shows, Royal Trux will release a live album later this year. As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2686 words. Tags: Music, Fashion, Independence, Inspiration. Jennifer Herrema on making stuff and never giving a fuck You do a little bit of everything—make music, design clothes and jewelry, do a radio show, make visual art. Am I forgetting anything? Yeah, I’m doing tons. Like, I only slept two hours last night, which is fucked up and not unusual for me, but this time it was because I did reflexology and it made me really wired. So, yeah, my brain is kind of fucked today. What else am I doing? Well, last year I made a “movie”—please include quotation marks—with Ariel Pink for Flaunt magazine. They were just like, “Hey! Will you make a movie for us, and we will use stills from it for the next issue?” and I was like, “Yeah, okay.” I’ve done stuff with them in the past where they were like, “Do whatever you want” and I like that. I like doing whatever I want. So I got all of these people from LA, running the gamut from pro surfers to strippers to musicians, a total mishmash of about 18 different people coming in from different places. -

Kurt Sayenga Interviewed by John Davis June 13, 2017 Pasadena, California 0:00:00 to 1:22:55 ________________________________________________________________________ 0:00:00 Sayenga: I’m Kurt Sayenga. Davis: And I’m John Davis. I’m the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland. Today is June 13th, 2017. So, we're here to talk about your work that you did with fanzines in Washington D.C., particularly in the… Sayenga: My juvenilia, yes. Davis: Yes, [laugh] in the 1980s. I’m basically trying to speak to people to hear their stories about why they did zines, how they did zines. What were the experiences like? What did they take from it? You today, how do you connect to it? All these things. I’m just kind of trying to review that with some people who have done fanzines, who are from D.C. and just see kind of where it took them, as well as how they did it. So as far as Greed goes, first issue was I think 1985? Let’s consult. Sayenga: Good question. I’m going to look it up here. Let’s see. Oh, there’s a picture of—man, late Winter 1986. [laugh] Davis: OK. Very specific. Sayenga: So basically probably almost 1987, which makes it—no, ’86 is right though, because I know it took a while to actually pull it all together. So, well, sort of relatively—it seemed like a while at the time, because everything seemed to take forever. But actually when you look at it, it all flowed together with amazing speed. -

The Weekly Arts End Entertainment Supplement to the Daily Nexus Daily Nexus 2 a Thursday, January 11,1996
The Weekly Arts end Entertainment Supplement to the Daily Nexus Daily Nexus 2 A Thursday, January 11,1996 Various Artists R ed H ot + B othered Red Hot/Kinetic/Reprise This is a review of a compilation of some of the truly underground music world’s fin est efforts. Just like Red Hot + Dance and Red Hot+Blue, Red Hot + Bothered is an album created to benefit AIDS research. Red Hot + Bothered is at least a few months old, but hey, I just got it so it’s new to me. Featured are a wide range of bands that well-represent “indie rock.” For all those who may not know what indie rock is, it’s music that’s put out through independent labels. However, there have been some large exceptions to this recently. Bands such as Jawbox, Royal Trux, Shudder to Think ana, earlier, Sonic Youth, who had been indie bands have signed to major labels. Being that they still have a raw, unproduced sound and that they are still highly respected by indie rockers, it’s not quite right to drop them from that indie-rock labeling. Another stranger and somewhat more glaring exception to this indie rock stuff is the fact that Red Hot+Bothered is on Reprise, which is a major label. The Red Hot people tried to hide this by putting the compilation out through the indie label Kinetic simulta neously. Oh well. So much for staying true to hardcore roots. So much for keeping it real. At least it’s for a good cause and the music is really good. -

The Complete Ask Scott
ASK SCOTT Downloaded from the Loud Family / Music: What Happened? website and re-ordered into July-Dec 1997 (Year 1: the start of Ask Scott) July 21, 1997 Scott, what's your favorite pizza? Jeffrey Norman Scott: My favorite pizza place ever was Symposium Greek pizza in Davis, CA, though I'm relatively happy at any Round Table. As for my favorite topping, just yesterday I was rereading "Ash Wednesday" by T.S. Eliot (who can guess the topping?): Lady, three white leopards sat under a juniper-tree In the cool of the day, having fed to satiety On my legs my heart my liver and that which had been contained In the hollow round of my skull. And God said Shall these bones live? shall these Bones live? And that which had been contained In the bones (which were already dry) said chirping: Because of the goodness of this Lady And because of her loveliness, and because She honours the Virgin in meditation, We shine with brightness. And I who am here dissembled Proffer my deeds to oblivion, and my love To the posterity of the desert and the fruit of the gourd. It is this which recovers My guts the strings of my eyes and the indigestible portions Which the leopards reject. A: pepperoni. honest pizza, --Scott August 14, 1997 Scott, what's your astrological sign? Erin Amar Scott: Erin, wow! How are you? Aries. Do you think you are much like the publicized characteristics of that sun sign? Some people, it's important to know their signs; not me. -
Download a PDF of the Inventory B
PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise. -

In 2013, faced with the loss of several members of this scene over the course of twelve months, archivists in the University of Louisville Archives and Special Collections launched a project to docu- ment this important slice of Louisville’s musical culture.
