It analyzes the formation mechanism of character convergence to build the whole image of these ancient towns with Zhouzhuang as a prototype. Based on Tourism Geography Theory and Regional Linkage Theory, it puts forward the fact that the character convergence can be beneficial to building a whole tourism image and to enhancing people’s awareness of ancient heritage. But some problems caused by the convergence will also be presented, such as the identical tourism development model, the backward infrastructure and the destruction of original ecology. Introduction With Taihu Lake as the center, the region of Jiangnan, the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is scattered all over by many historic ancient towns. These towns have a long history and deep cultural deposit. They are densely occupied and economically developed. They form a national transport network combined with inland waterway. These towns have witnessed a long-term economic prosperity in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and are now generally called “Jiangnan Ancient Towns”. Since 1980s, under the wave of reform, opening up and modernization construction, experience-based tourism and leisure tourism of these towns have achieved great development. Under the influence of “China's First Water Town” Zhouzhuang, some other similar towns like Tongli, Luzhi, Xitang, Nanxun, Wuzhen all choose to follow suit. -

Places are shaped by being lived in; they are spaces of encounter where the little histories of the city are played out. They are, of course, also shaped by the state through planning, supervision, ordinances, and so forth. The patterns and rhythms of life in the small spaces of the city are therefore not simply a straightforward projection of civil life. Places are also sites of resistance, contestation, and actions that are often thought to be illegal by the (local) state. After introducing the concept of place, the remainder of this article is a reflection on places and place-making (but also place-breaking) in urban China. Because the patterns and rhythms of urban life have continuity, however, my approach to their study was historical. The story told here is roughly divided into four major periods: Imperial China, Republican China, the People’s Republic under Mao Zedong, and the reform period from about 1980 onward. I then return to the concepts of place and place-making with which I began, summarizing my findings and suggesting some topics for further research. -

Recent scholarship on state-religion relations in China has highlighted the continuities between republican-era and PRC anti-superstition campaigns and state management of religion, as well as the creative adaptation of religious groups within an unfavourable regulatory environment. Negotiating religion is an excellent addition to this literature, using the case of Guangzhou fron the late 19th century to the 1930s. The first reform to affect the traditional religious ecology was the “convert temples to schools” movement, which began in 1898. It was the large Buddhist and Daoist monasteries that were the first targets of this campaign, rather than the more numerous territorial temples. An important reason was that territorial temples were owned and managed by entire local communities, represented by their local elites, rather than by small numbers of socially stigmatized monks and nuns. -

The Nationalists drew their power from China's citizens, but they also subjected them to a regimen of training and control. Petitions from the ``Nanjing decade'' highlight the resulting tensions between government and the governed. Citizens from all walks of life accepted the ruling party's invitation to participate in the construction of the republic. Yet they also used petitions to seek redress when they believed the Nationalists had fallen short of their obligations. These documents mark a turbulent period of transition from imperial rule to representative democracy. They also characterize an era when new political ideas, new media, and new social organizations helped people take an old device and transform it into a useful weapon for asserting their rights as modern citizens. Rethinking the “Magic State” in China Political Imagination and Magical Practice in Rural Beijing
Xing Wang Fudan University, Shanghai Rethinking the “Magic State” in China Political Imagination and Magical Practice in Rural Beijing This paper discusses the local imagination of the Chinese state in rural Beijing using ethnographic evidence. In particular, it examines the process by which the state is internalized in people’s lives through local magical practices and collective memories of traditional rituals, geomancy, and spirit possessions. I argue that the magical aspect of the Chinese state in people’s imagination denies an understanding of a magic state as the alternative for a violent and hegemonic reality for the state. In this sense, the Chinese popular perception of the state challenges the established concept of the state as the consequence of an elitist discussion and definition, and at the same time also challenges the national discourse. Furthermore, magical practices and beliefs in rural Beijing in relation to the local comprehension of the Chinese state show that in many cases, the state is considered as powerless. Hong Chengchou was the Ming Viceroy of Jifu and Liaoning 薊遼 總 督 from 1639 until his capture by the forces of Hungtaiji in the fall of Songshan 松山 in 1642. After the rebel occupation of Beijing and the death of the CZ emperor, Hong assumed official appointment under the Qing and went on to become the most important former Ming official to assist in the Qing conquest of all of China (see Li Guangtao 1948a; Wang Chen-main 1999; Li Xinda 1992). Many of his very numerous surviving memorials have been published in MQSL and MQDA. In the present col- lection of 67 memorials, 13 represent his service as Viceroy of Jiangnan and “Pacifier of the South” 招撫南方 from 1645 through 1648. -

This is a question of utmost importance in reviving Confucianism. The thought of Mencius and Xunzi has many inherent complexities and contradictions. After all, they have been revised, reconstituted, and reused alongside shifts in lifestyles and social struc- tures; their respective influence also waxed and waned accordingly. Xunzi’s teachings flourished during China’s transition from monarchical feudalism to imperial autocracy, an indication that Xunzi’s thinking has Legalist elements. The rulers in the imperial period adopted “sole veneration of Confucian learning” [du zun rushu 獨尊儒術], so the suspiciously Legalist teachings of Xunzi went into decline while the orthodox Confucian teachings of Mencius were on the rise. At the same time, Xunzi’s thought continued to play an important, perhaps even fundamental, role in hidden ways. This is the political path of being “openly Confucian, covertly Legalist” [yang ru yin fa 陽儒 陰法] practiced under autocratic authority. As Chinese society began to modernize, Xunzi’s teachings enjoyed a revival, revealing that some of its strains were compatible with modern Enlightenment ideas. Further, this modern revival of Xunzi occurred on the heels of a Confucian revival. The fact that the two then more or less continued to coexist indicates the need to rethink the two schools of thought in an integrated way. -

'A6G*+B *+) THE RECORD OF THE LANDS OF YUE Introduction !is chapter describes key sites in the kingdom of Yue, including King Goujian’s capital, which was one of China’s oldest recorded planned cities.1 !is chapter emphasises the impact King Goujian had on the land- scape of this region: virtually every building mentioned is said to have been erected either for his personal use or as part of the war e"ort he ini- tiated to defeat the kingdom of Wu. In this text the authors repeatedly link landscape features of northern Zhejiang province to events from the life of the greatest king of Yue. However these attributions (in the absence of further evidence) must remain largely speculative. Numerous geograph- ical features and ancient buildings south of the Yangtze river have been linked to famous ?gures from the con#ict between Wu, Yue and Chu, and sometimes these attributions have been conclusively disproved.2 It is important to stress that unlike King Helü’s capital (modern Suzhou), 1 !e site of King Goujian’s capital is now the city of Shaoxing in Zhejiang province. !e name Shaoxing commemorates a turn in the fortunes of the Southern Song dynasty. In 0015, the capital of the Northern Song dynasty Bianliang ϰΔ (now known as Kaifeng –ݶǭ) fell to the Jurchen Jin dynasty. !e new emperor, Song Gaozong LJࠆlj (r. 0012 0051), moved south to evade capture, and established his capital at a series of southern dž (now known as Hangzhou ʹș), Pingjiang ȳϭ (modernט cities, including Lin’an ș) and Yuezhou ۚș (Shaoxing). -

Standing on a hill, looking northward across the city toward the Yangzi, he might have decried the masts of more than seventy British ships anchored in a thick nest on the river, or perhaps have noticed the strange shapes of the four armored steamships that, contrary to expecta- tions, had successfully penetrated the treacherous lower stretches of China's main waterway. Might have seen this, indeed, except that his view most likely would have been screened by the black clouds of smoke swirling up from one, then two, then three of the city's five gates, as fire spread to the guardtowers atop them.
