The First Emperor: Selections from the Historical Records (Oxford
oxford world’s classics THE FIRST EMPEROR Sima Qian’s Historical Records (Shiji), from which this selection is taken, is the most famous Chinese historical work, which not only established a pattern for later Chinese historical writing, but was also much admired for its literary qualities, not only in China, but also in Japan, where it became available as early as the eighth cen- tury ad. The work is vast and complex, and to appreciate its nature it is necessary to make a selection of passages concerning a particu- lar period. To this end the short-lived Qin Dynasty, which unified China in the late third century bc, has been chosen for this transla- tion as a key historical period which well illustrates Sima’s method. Sima himself lived from 145 bc to about 86 bc. He inherited the post of Grand Historiographer from his father, and was so deter- mined to complete his work that he suffered the penalty of castra- tion rather than the more honourable alternative of death when he fell foul of the Emperor. Raymond Dawson was an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. He was Editor of The Legacy of China (1964) and his other publications include The Chinese Chameleon: An Analysis of European Conceptions of Chinese Civilization (1967), Imperial China (1972), The Chinese Experience (1978), Confucius (1982), A New Introduction to Classical Chinese (1984), and the Analects (Oxford World’s Classics, 1993). In South Korean scholarship, Ch’usa (Kim’s pen name), a prominent scholar and calligrapher of the late Choso˘ n period, has drawn immense attention from scholars of different fields. However, Ch’usa studies have been centered around his art and aesthetics, most notably, his calligraphic innovations, while his evidential learning, as well as its historical and intellectual importance, has been understudied. Hence, I will situate Ch’usa’s scholarship at the intersection of various cultural and intellectual factors, such as the emergence and development of Qing evidential learning and Han-Song eclecticism in Qing and Choso˘ n, the thought of Pak Che-ga and the Pukhak movement and, most importantly, his academic exchanges with Qing literati during and after his participation in a Yo˘ nhaeng mission in 1809. -

Literature means, written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit. Books and writings published on a particular subject. Definition:- Literature is a group of works of art made up of words. Most are written, but some are passed on by word of mouth. Literature usually means works of poetry and prose that are especially well written. There are many different kinds of literature, such as poetry, plays, or novels.1 Brief Intro of Confucianism:- Confucianism is a way of life founded by Confucius (551-749 BC) who was a Chinese sage and wise man. According to Yale University, the sacred texts of Confucianism are five books that legend states Confucius wrote. Although Confucianism isn't strictly a religion, it does have a number of prominent texts, considered by many followers, to be sacred. According to the "Ancient History Encyclopedia," Confucius was an ancient Chinese philosopher, living in the 6th Century BCE. -

CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES AND CHINA’S CANONICAL WRITINGS BY PROFESSORHARLAN P. BEACH THE canonical writings under discussion in this article are the classical books commonly regarded as the orthodox expositions of the Taoist, Confucian and Buddhist systems of ethics and religion. More specifically, the phrase includes for Taoism its original canon, the ‘ Tao Te Ching,’ or Classic of the Tao and its Manifestations, ascribed to Lao Tzii, and the ‘Nan Hua Chi% Ching,’ or True Classic of Nan-hua,l written by the most famous of Lao Tzii’s followers, Chuang Tzii, ‘ mystic, moralist and social reformer,’ whose aim, according to the historian, Ssii-ma Ch’ien, was to asperse the Confucian school and to glorify the mysteries of his master. We also include the thin volumes of a probable forgery ascribed to Lieh Tzii, but not the essays of Han Fei Tzii of the third pre-Christian century, the esoteric works of the prince of the Han dynasty, Huai-nan Tzti, nor a modern production of the Taoist School as in- fluenced by Buddhism, the ‘ Kan Ying P’ien,’ or Tractate upon Rewards and Punishments. Of course one would not mention a mass of mystical, magical and puerile writings that have degraded Taoism and made it a laugh- ing-stock and a hissing.2 The phrase ‘ Confucian Classics ’ is commonly sup- posed to include only the Five Classics, or Confucianism’s Old Testament, and the Four Books, roughly correspond- ing to our New Testament. The focus of my analysis is his masterpiece, Renxue 仁學. From his position of Buddhist eclecticism, Tan discoursed at length on non-differentiation as the truth of the universe to reflect on the creative disposition of human agency. He described in Renxue how this disposition would contribute to the agendas defining Chinese modernity. In addition, discussing the meanings of non-differentiation, Tan also generalized about the nature of the human agency he attempted to advocate: while he perceived the human agency blessed with a non-differentiating mindset as an omnipotent history-making force, he also argued that it did not confer upon its owner the status of world savior. -
