ABSTRACT Brazil is currently the largest producer and exporter of soybeans in the world, corresponding to an annual production of 124.8 million tons. Due to its production system being largely in the tropical region, it favors the development of pests with potential economic impact and difficult control. In this work, the first occurrence of Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick, 1909) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is reported, a polyphagous insect, with a twilight and nocturnal habit, native to South America, and commonly found causing damage to fruit. Specimens were observed in the field in the vegetative and reproductive phases of soybean cultivation in Mato Grosso, Brazil, in commercial crops in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, causing defoliation and the rolling of young leaflets. The larvae were collected and kept in the laboratory and fed with soybean leaves to identify the species. Keywords: polyphage, hosts, dispersion, Glycine max. Brazilian Journal of Animal and Environmental Research, Curitiba, v.4, n.1, p. 60-66 jan./mar. É encontrada com frequência danificando frutas como mírtilo (Vaccinium corymbosum), pêssego (Prunus pérsica), caqui (Diospyros kaki), Pyrus, laranja (Citrus sinensis), milho (Zea mays), Acacia, Medicago sativa, Chrysanthemum, Pelargonium, macieira-brava (Malus sylvestris), maçã (Malus domestica), uva (Vitis vinífera), Rosa, hortelã-pimenta (Mentha piperita), pimenta (Capsicum annuum), tomate (S. lycopersicum), batata (S. tuberosum) (TREMATERRA & BROWN, 2004; MENEGUIM & HOHMANN, 2007; ROCCA & BROWN, 2013). Brazilian Journal of Animal and Environmental Research, Curitiba, v.4, n.1, p. 60-66 jan./mar. • Regional Population Dynamics of Argyrotaenia Citrana in Northwest
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THIS OF Alan Lee Knight for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology presented on April 3, 1986. Title: Regional Population Dynamics of-Argyrotaenia citrana in Northwest Caneberry: Phenology, Overwintering Survivorship, and Movement as Measured by Pheromone Traps and Larval Sampling. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: Developmental requirements were determined for both larva and pupa as 503 and 176 degree-days (dd) above a lower threshold of 5°C. Adult emergence occurred from 300 to 700 dd accumulated from January 1st. Cumulative male emergence preceded female's by 50- 80 dd. A PETE phenology model modified to include a temperature-dependent female activity function to regulate oviposition significantly improved prediction of egg hatch. Two pheromone trap catch peaks occurred in fields with overwintering populations. The first coincided with peak male emergence; as female emergence peaked, pheromone trap catches declined. The second peak occurred after 750 dd and varied in size with the first peak. The influence of female moth/pheromone trap competition on temporal patterns of trap catch was studied in a semi-enclosed courtyard. Three distinct periods of pheromone trap catch interpretation each bounded by a specific ratio of active males-to-calling females were seen. Two trap catch peaks typically occurred. Field sampling of overwintering populations, laboratory temperature bioassays, and controlled field experiments demonstrated that age-specific differences in cold hardiness exist among larval stages and correlation of historical winter temperatures with pheramone trap catch suggests winter severity is a major factor influencing the timing of spring emergence. A large grid of pheromone traps canbined with larval sampling were used to assess regional overwintering survivorship and seasonal movement patterns.

  • Mini Data Sheet on Argyrotaenia Sphaleropa
DROPSA, December 2016 This short description was prepared in the framework of the EU FP7 project DROPSA - Strategies to develop effective, innovative and practical approaches to protect major European fruit crops from pests and pathogens (grant agreement no. 613678). This pest was listed in the DROPSA alert lists for apple, orange and mandarin, Vaccinium and Vitis fruits. Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Fruit pathway: larvae feed externally on fruit (Rocca and Brown, 2013; Meneguim and Hohmann, 2007; Botton et al., 2003, SATA, 2012, USDA, 2015). In apple trees, it is common for them to feed on leaves and fruit at the same time (Bentancourt et al. 2003). On Vitis, larvae feed externally on grape berries; when they are once settled on the bunches, the larvae ignore leaves (Bentancourt et al. 2003)In a PRA on several Citrus species from Peru, USDA (2003) note that A. sphaleropa attacks fruit at fruit set, causing premature drop; however, Meneguim and Hohmann (2007) mention damage to newly formed or ripening Citrus fruit. It was therefore considered here that the pest may be associated with Citrus fruit at harvest, with an uncertainty. Other pathways: plants for planting, soil (on its own or associated with plants or tubers); larvae are also on flowers, buds, leaves of their host plants (see 'damage'), no information was found on the location of pupae, but the pupae of the related species A. velutina and A. citrina are in leaves or debris on the ground. Uncertain pathways: cut flowers and branches, herbs. Hosts: Polyphagous, on a wide range of hosts, incl. Vaccinium corymbosum (new host; Rocca and Brown, 2013), Prunus persica, Diospyros kaki, Pyrus, Citrus, Citrus sinensis (Meneguim and Hohmann, 2007), Zea mays, Acacia, Medicago sativa, Chrysanthemum, Pelargonium, Malus sylvestris, Malus domestica, Prunus, Vitis vinifera, Rosa, Mentha piperita, Capsicum annuum, Solanum lycopersicum, S.
