Focus on German Studies 20 41 Renaming Streets, Inverting Perspectives: Acts Of Postcolonial Memory Citizenship In Berlin Jenny Engler Humbolt University of Berlin n October 2004, the local assemblyman Christoph Ziermann proposed a motion to rename “Mohrenstraße” (Blackamoor Street) in the city center of Berlin (BVV- Mitte, “Drucksache 1507/II”) and thereby set in train a debate about how to deal Iwith the colonial past of Germany and the material and semantic marks of this past, present in public space. The proposal was discussed heatedly in the media, within the local assembly, in public meetings, in university departments, by historians and linguists, by postcolonial and anti-racist activists, by developmental non-profit organizations, by local politicians, and also by a newly founded citizens’ initiative, garnering much atten- tion. After much attention was given to “Mohrenstraße,” the issue of renaming, finally came to include the so-called African quarter in the north of Berlin, where several streets named after former colonial regions and, most notably, after colonial actors are located. The proposal to rename “Mohrenstraße” was refused by the local assembly. Nev- ertheless, the assembly passed a resolution that encourages the “critical examination of German colonialism in public streets” (BVV-Mitte, “Drucksache 1711/II”) and, ultimately, decided to set up an information board in the so-called African quarter in order to contextualize the street names (BVV-Mitte, “Drucksache 2112/III”). More or less all inner city districts fit some rubric of gentrification discussed in the international literature. However, as a result of Berlin’s unique history as a divided city, the process has developed at times and in patterns that are markedly different from other global cities. The article briefly outlines the urban agendas and renewal efforts of East and West Berlin during the years of division. It proceeds to document the political, economic, and cultural factors underlying the development of Berlin’s place and history specific development of gentrification in the reunified city since 1990. Gesundbrunnen ist ein Ortsteil von Berlin. Im Rahmen der Verwaltungsreform 2001 wurden die ehemaligen Verwaltungsbezirke Wedding, Mitte und Tiergarten zu- sammengefasst und deren Ortsteile getrennt. Dabei entstanden im neu geschaffenen Bezirk Mitte neben den Ortsteilen Mitte, Tiergarten und Wedding auch die Ortsteile Gesundbrunnen, Moabit und Hansaviertel. Im Westen grenzt Gesundbrunnen an den Ortsteil Wedding, im Norden an die Bezirke Reinickendorf und Pankow mit dessen – im Osten gelegenen – Ortsteil Prenzlauer Berg. Im Süden liegt der Ortsteil Mitte des gleichnamigen Bezirks Mitte. Eine der Hauptver- kehrsachsen sind die Bad- und Brunnenstraße, die den Ortsteil von Nord nach Süd durchque- ren. Im Süden endet der Gesundbrunnen an der Bernauer Straße und im Norden und Osten an der Linie Louise-Schroeder-Platz – Reginhardstraße – Ritterlandweg – Provinzstraße – Kühnemannstraße – S-Bahn-Trasse (Nordbahn) – Mauerpark. Der südöstliche Teil wird „Brun- nenviertel“ genannt. Wichtigste Station des öffentlichen Personennah- und Fernverkehrs im Ortsteil ist der Umsteigebahnhof Gesundbrunnen. Durch Gesundbrunnen fließt die Panke. Geschichte und Entwicklung Der Name Gesundbrunnen geht auf eine in der Nähe des späte- ren Luisenbades entdeckte mineralhaltige Quelle zurück, der heilende und jugenderhaltende Eigenschaften nachgesagt wur- den. Als gestaltende Kraft hat sich die Bürgerplattform seither in den Themen Jobcen- ter, Öffentlicher Raum und Bildung für ihren Stadtteil eingebracht. Die Erfolge zeigen, dass die Gestal- tung unserer Gesellschaft längst nicht mehr nur Aufgabe von Politik ist, sondern verantwortungsbe- wusste Bürger/innen braucht, die sich für das Wohl ihrer Städte engagieren. Organisation und methodisches Vorgehen Es ist ein Donnerstagabend im November 2008. Über 1.150 Menschen haben sich in der Universal Hall in Berlin- Moabit versammelt. Viele müssen stehen, der Andrang ist groß und die Vielfalt der versammelten Menschen ungewöhnlich. Es sind die Mitglieder der knapp 40 Gruppen der Bürgerplattform »Wir sind da!« Wed- ding/Moabit. Moscheegemeinden, Kirchengemeinden, soziale Einrichtungen und Selbsthilfegruppen sind zu- sammengekommen, um nach zweijähriger Vorarbeit öffentlich die Gründung ihrer Bürgerplattform zu feiern. In einem intensiven Prozess der Beziehungsbildung über ethnische, religiöse und soziale Grenzen hinweg ha- ben die Mitglieder zusammengefunden und ihre Anliegen, Sorgen und Ärger geteilt. So stehen an diesem Abend Vertreter/innen aus den Mitgliedsgruppen mit arabischen, türkischen, asiatischen, afrikanischen und deutschen Wurzeln auf der Bühne. Sie erzählen von ihren Erfahrungen und Problemen, davon, was sie in den Schulen, im Jobcenter oder an öffentlichen Plätzen in ihrem Stadtteil erleben. Mit ihren Erfahrungen sprechen sie nicht nur für sich, sondern für einen Großteil der Bürger/innen aus Wedding und Moabit.
