  • The Croatian Contribution to Plans for Revision of the Yugoslav- Hungarian Border in 1945-1946
UDK: 327(497.1:439)’’1945/1946’’ 32(497.5)’’1945/1946’’ Izvorni znanstveni članak Received: September 7, 2012 Accepted: September 28, 2012 THE CROATIAN CONTRIBUTION TO PLANS FOR REVISION OF THE YUGOSLAV- HUNGARIAN BORDER IN 1945-1946 Petar BAGARIĆ∗ Th e Border Commission attached to the Presidency of the Government of the Federal State of Croatia prepared plans to revise the Yugoslav- Hungarian border during the period from the end of the Second World War to the Paris Peace Conference. Th is work introduces the Commission’s staff and presents its operating methods and the results of its work, as well as its rela- tions with federal institutions in Belgrade. Key words: Federal state of Croatia, Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, Hun- gary, Baja Triangle, Border Commission, alteration of borders. Introduction At the end of the Second World War in Europe, preparations commenced for a peace conference that would determine the peace conditions for the defeated states. Th e status of the defeated states was infl uenced by various factors: the time of their transfer to the Allied side, their armed contribution to the Allied victory or the number and strength of the victorious states which had territorial demands against their territories. Th e Democratic Federal, or Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia came out of the war as a victor and as the legal successor to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Th is meant that it could place before Hungary the matter of Hungarian occupation of territories such as Prekomurje, Međimurje, Baranja and Bačka during the Second World War and seek material and territorial compensation.

  • Rivers and River Deities in Roman Period in the Croatian Part of Pannonnia
Ante Rendić-Miočević - Rivers and river deities in... (293-305) Histria Antiqua, 21/2012 Ante RENDIĆ-MIOČEVIĆ RIVERS AND RIVER DEITIES IN ROMAN PERIOD IN THE CROATIAN PART OF PANNONNIA UDK 903/904:656.62>:291.212>(398 Panonija)“00/02“ Ante Rendić-Miočević, prof. Original scientific paper Poljička ul. 29a Received: 3.07.2012. 10000 Zagreb, Croatia Approved: 23.08.2012. e-mail: [email protected] he purpose of this contribution is to point out several remarks on river navigation, as well as on worship of river deities, in the Croatian part of the Roman province of Pannonia. The rivers were at the Roman period the most im- Tportant were the largest European rivers, such as the Rhine and the Danube, both connecting the northern with the southern and the western with the eastern regions of the continent. Besides the Danube (Danuvius, Danubius), the border river of the Empire, the most important rivers for traffic, economy, trade, and often also for strategic and military matters of Croatian part of Pannonia were the Drava (Dravus) and the Sava (Savus), together with, due to specific circumstances, the Kupa (Colapis), as well as the Bosut (Bathinus) and some others. This is recognized in literary sources and in a vast number of archaeological finds. On their banks were built important urban centres, together with accompanying infrastructure, harbours, bridges, etc. In this context, an inscription on a brick from Siscia is suggestive, testifying the fact that there were two harbours in Siscia, on both banks of the Kupa river. The most important urban centres were the colonies of Siscia (Sisak), Mursa (Osijek) and Cibalae (Vinkovci).

A cultural/historical guide to the Zagora (inland) region of Split-Dalmatia County ZAGORA THE DALMATIAN ZAGORA (INLAND) Joško Belamarić THE DALMATIAN ZAGORA (INLAND) A cultural/historical guide to the Zagora (inland) region of Split-Dalmatia County 4 Zagora 14 Klis Zagora 24 Cetinska krajina 58 Biokovo, Imotski, Vrgorac 3 Zagora THE DALMATIAN ZAGORA (INLAND) A cultural/historical guide to the Zagora (inland) region of Split-Dalmatia County Here, from Klis onwards, on the ridge of the Dinara mountain chain, the angst of inland Dalmatia’s course wastelands has for centuries been sundered from the broad seas that lead to a wider world. The experience of saying one’s goodbyes to the thin line of Dalmatia that has strung itself under the mountain’s crest, that viewed from the sea looks like Atlas’ brothers, is repeated, not without poetic chills, by dozens of travel writers. To define the cultural denominators of Zagora, the Dalmatian inland, is today a difficult task, as the anthropological fabric of the wider Dalmatian hinterland is still too often perceived through the utopian aspect of the Renaissance ideal, the cynicism of the Enlightenment, or the exaggeration of Romanticism and the 18th century national revival. After the fall of medieval feudalism, life here has started from scratch so many times - later observers have the impression that the local customs draw their roots from some untroubled prehistoric source in which the silence of the karst on the plateau towards Promina, behind Biokovo, the gurgling of the living waters of the Zrmanja, Krka, Čikola and Cetina Ri- vers, the quivering of grain on Petrovo, Hrvatac and Vrgorac Fields, on 4 Zagora the fat lands along Strmica and Sinj, create the ide- al framework for the pleasant countenance, joyous heart and sincere morality of the local population of which many have written, each from their own point of view: from abbot Fortis and Ivan Lovrić during the Baroque period, Dinko Šimunović and Ivan Raos not so long ago to Ivan Aralica and, in his own way, Miljenko Jergović today.
