Paleontological ~trsessment 1.0 INTRODUCTION A paleontological resource assessment has been conducted for the San Diego State University (SDSU) campus and surrounding areas~as a prelude to determining the need to implementMitigation, Monitoring, and ReportingPrograms (MMRPs) to mitigateagainst the possible loss of nonrenewable paleontological resources (i.e., fossils) during construction of six proposed project components contained in the SDSU 2009 Master Plan Revision. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) considers the potential loss of nonrenewable cultural resources, including fossils, as a justification to implement mitigation measures. The coastal plain of San Diego County has produced a rich and diverse fossil record that is well documented in the published literature. In addition, the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) in San Diego and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (LACMIP) in Los Angeles have extensive collections of fossils from this area. A summary of .1 the paleontologicalresources of SanDiego County (DemCrC and Walsh, 1993) provides relevant information on the paleontology, distribution, and resource sensitivity of all of the local sedimentary formations, and is the single most useful document used by environmental planners when assessing the paleontological resource potential and mitigation requirements for local construction projects. This report, in conjunction with the published geologic maps of the coastal plain areas of the county (Kennedy, 1975; Kennedy and Peterson, 1975; Kennedy and Tan, 1977; Tan and Kennedy, 1996), is indispensable in the evaluation process. This paleontological resource assessment is based on the above-mentioned documents, as well as informationderived from collectionsand recordssearches by the Departmentof Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum in San Diego. Based on the published geologic map of the area (Figure 2.0-1, after Kennedy and Peterson, 1975, pi. 3B), seven geologic units or formations are present in the footprint of the SDSU 2007 Master Plan Revision (Figures 1.0-1 through 1.0-5). The nature of these formations and their likelihood of yielding unique paleontological resources are also discussed in relation to the location of the proposed project component areas (Figures I.~ and 1.~5).     Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2015 Kaori Tsukui All rights reserved ABSTRACT Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui The age of the Bridgerian/Uintan boundary has been regarded as one of the most important outstanding problems in North American Land Mammal “Age” (NALMA) biochronology. The Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming preserves one of the best stratigraphic records of the faunal boundary as well as the preceding Bridgerian NALMA. In this dissertation, I first developed a chronological framework for the Eocene Bridger Formation including the age of the boundary, based on a combination of magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb ID-TIMS geochronology. Within the temporal framework, I attempted at making a regional correlation of the boundary-bearing strata within the western U.S., and also assessed the body size evolution of three representative taxa from the Bridger Basin within the context of Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. Integrating radioisotopic, magnetostratigraphic and astronomical data from the early to middle Eocene, I reviewed various calibration models for the Geological Time Scale and intercalibration of 40Ar/39Ar data among laboratories and against U-Pb data, toward the community goal of achieving a high precision and well integrated Geological Time Scale. In Chapter 2, I present a magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb zircon geochronology of the Bridger Formation from the Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming.

So I found myself with a major split between biology and geology. —Van Houten to Sheldon Judson (10/25/1990) Franklyn Bosworth Van Houten (1914–2010), sedimentologist, teacher, and the chairman of my dissertation committee at Princeton University, recently left us for red beds on Mars or perhaps it was to oolitic ironstone in northeastern Colombia. Van lived through most of the twentieth century and he made a strong start on the twenty-first century. Not long before he passed on at the age of 96, we talked on the telephone, and he asked about my research, my life and family, as he had done for almost half a century. He was always a friend. Early in my first month at Princeton, Harry Hammond Hess (1906–1969), then chairman of the Department of Geosciences, suggested a thesis topic. It evolved into an effort to correlate normal and reversed paleomagnetic events in the Triassic Chugwater Formation (now a Group) of west-central Wyoming. Harry believed many geophysicists that were publishing on reversals of Earth’s magnetic field didn’t have a firm grasp of the geological foundation of such fluctuations. Franklyn B. Van Houten, a red-bed enthusiast and specialist, soon became my principal supervisor, joined later by Bob Hargraves (1928–2003), a first-rate petrologist from South Africa.

Murphey, Thomas S. Kelly, Kevin R. Chamberlain, Kaori Tsukui, and William C. Clyde ABSTRACT This is the third and last of a series of reports that provide detailed descriptions and taxonomic revisions of the fauna from the Turtle Bluff Member (TBM) of the middle Eocene Bridger Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The TBM has been designated as the stratotype section for biochron Ui1a (earliest Uintan) of the Uintan North Ameri- can Land Mammal age and here we document new faunal elements along with new U- Pb geochronologic and paleomagnetic data for the TBM. Prior to these reports, detailed systematic accounts of the taxa from the TBM were unavailable with the exception of one primate (Hemiacodon engardae). Here we document the occurrence of the following didelphimorphian marsupials from the TBM: Herpetotherium knighti, Herpetotherium marsupium, Peradectes chesteri, and Peradectes californicus. New U- Pb dates of 47.31 ± 0.06 Ma and 46.94 ± 0.14 Ma from the TBM provide precise con- straints on the age of the fauna. These dates plus new paleomagnetic data further sup- port the existing evidence that the TBM Fauna and the boundary between the Bridgerian and Uintan North American Land Mammal ages occurs within the lower part of Chron C21n of the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale. The only other fauna from North America that can confidently be assigned to biochron Ui1a is the Basal Tertiary Local Fauna from the Devil's Graveyard Formation of Texas.

Kelly Research Associate, Vertebrate Paleontology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90007 ABSTRACT A large number of isolated rodent teeth have been recently recovered from the Duchesnean (middle Eocene) Simi Valley Landfill Local Fauna of the Sespe Formation during a paleontologic mitigation program at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, Ventura County, California. Included in these teeth are new samples of Metanoiamys korthi, Paradjidaumo reynoldsi, Simiacritomys whistleri, and Simimys landeri. The discovery of upper and putative lower premolars of Simiacritomys whistleri supports it’s referral to Eomyidae. New occurrences for the Simi Valley Landfill Local Fauna include Eomyidae (one or more species of uncertain affinities) and Pareumys sp. INTRODUCTION Within the new specimens from bed 30A are numerous additional rodent teeth, including those of The middle member of the Sespe Formation, species that were previously known from small sample which is exposed along the north side of Simi Valley, sizes (Metanoiamys korthi Kelly and Whistler, 1998, Ventura County, California, has previously yielded Paradjidaumo reynoldsi Kelly, 1992, Simiacritomys numerous middle Eocene (Uintan and Duchesnean) whistleri Kelly, 1992, and Simimys landeri Kelly, fossil mammals (e.g., Golz, 1976; Golz and 1992). Also, included within these specimens are the Lillegraven, 1977; Mason, 1988; Kelly, 1990, 1992, first records of Pareumys sp. and at least one or more 2009, 2010; Kelly et al., 1991; Kelly and Whistler, undetermined eomyid species from bed 30A.

Eleven families of plesiadapiforms are recognized, including the Paromomyidae. Questions surrounding this family explored in this thesis include its pattern of extinction, its phylogeny and migration, and its dietary ecology. Firstly, there is a record of misclassifying small-sized omomyoid euprimates as late-occurring paromomyid plesiadapiforms. Here, a new omomyoid from the Uintan of California is described. This material was previously thought to pertain to a paromomyid, similar to previously named supposed paromomyids Phenacolemur shifrae and Ignacius mcgrewi. The new Californian species, Ph. shifrae, and I. mcgrewi are transferred to Trogolemurini, a tribe of omomyoids. The implications of this taxonomic change are that no paromomyids are found between the early Bridgerian and the Chadronian, suggesting that the group suffered near-extinction during a period of particularly warm climate. Secondly, migration of paromomyids between North America and Europe is poorly understood. The European material (genus Arcius) is taxonomically reassessed, including emended diagnoses for all four previously named species, and description of two new Arcius species. A cladistic ii analysis of the European paromomyids resolves Arcius as monophyletic, implying that the European radiation of paromomyids was a product of a single migration event from North America.
