Yochelson (1928-2006), principal organizer of the first NAPC (1969) and a major catalyst in its establishment as a highly successful quadrennial meeting. Welcome On behalf of the Associated North American Paleontological Societies, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Cincinnati for the 9th North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC 2009). As the abstracts in this volume attest, this is a wonderfully eclectic meeting, with sessions and presentations covering an array of taxa, and touching on important questions and themes that drive the science of paleontology in the 21st century. In the year when we commemorate the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth and the sesquicentennial of The Origin of Species, it is appropriate that NAPC 2009 take place in Cincinnati. There are few places on the continent that can match the rich paleontological heritage of this region. Most paleontologists are aware that the classic strata and fossils of the Cincinnatian have long served as an essential natural laboratory and proving ground for paleoecological, macroevolutionary, and stratigraphic investigations. Fewer may know, however, that the region is also considered the birthplace of American paleontology, with active collecting of mastodons and other Pleistocene fossils at nearby Big Bone Lick, Kentucky as far back as the early 18th century. As we celebrate Cincinnati’s paleontological riches, it is important to also recognize that the region has endured repeated efforts to undermine the teaching of evolution. While the focus of NAPC 2009 is rightly on the scientific themes that propel paleontology, we thought it appropriate and timely to encourage professional paleontologists to consider their roles in broader societal debates, and we have organized a series of sessions and discussions on these themes as part of the meeting agenda, primarily on Thursday, June 25. I am especially indebted to the other members of the organizing committee and to colleagues who organized symposia and field trips for their efforts in putting together such a lively meeting. Special thanks go also to Jamie Miller, our meeting liaison in the University of Cincinnati Conferencing office, who has worked tirelessly over the past two years on a complex set of logistical challenges, ensuring that all participants have a productive and enjoyable stay in Cincinnati. But, only in the last few decades have we had the power to seriously tackle this enormous problem, and we are still struggling to incorporate phylogenetic thinking and methods into biology. His ecological insights on the factors regulating interactions among species and the structure of communities are strikingly prescient, and his role in the development of evolutionary science needs no mention. For much of the last century, however, the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology were separate and evolutionary ecology has traditionally been studied in two ways. Quaternary Research, 88(3), 525–536. https://doi.org/10.1017/qua.2017.71 Abstract A pilot study was designed to evaluate the potential of zircon geochronology as a provenance indicator of till from the Lake Michigan, Saginaw, and Huron-Erie Lobes of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Based on existing ice flow-path models, we hypothesized that till from each lobe would have different zircon age population distributions because the lobes originated from regions of the Canadian Shield with different bedrock ages. After correcting for zircon fertility, the majority of grains in all till samples are 1600–950 Ma, with ~30% of ages >2500 Ma. This similarity means that till from the three lobes cannot be clearly differentiated based on their zircon populations. The dominant ages found and the homogeneity of distributions in the till indicates a non-Shield source and instead reflect an origin from some combination of underlying till and sedimentary bedrock in the Great Lakes region.

    Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2015 Kaori Tsukui All rights reserved ABSTRACT Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui The age of the Bridgerian/Uintan boundary has been regarded as one of the most important outstanding problems in North American Land Mammal “Age” (NALMA) biochronology. The Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming preserves one of the best stratigraphic records of the faunal boundary as well as the preceding Bridgerian NALMA. In this dissertation, I first developed a chronological framework for the Eocene Bridger Formation including the age of the boundary, based on a combination of magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb ID-TIMS geochronology. Within the temporal framework, I attempted at making a regional correlation of the boundary-bearing strata within the western U.S., and also assessed the body size evolution of three representative taxa from the Bridger Basin within the context of Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. Integrating radioisotopic, magnetostratigraphic and astronomical data from the early to middle Eocene, I reviewed various calibration models for the Geological Time Scale and intercalibration of 40Ar/39Ar data among laboratories and against U-Pb data, toward the community goal of achieving a high precision and well integrated Geological Time Scale. In Chapter 2, I present a magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb zircon geochronology of the Bridger Formation from the Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming.

Acta Geologica Polonica, 51 (2),137-154. Warszawa 30 species of the archaeogastropod family Trochidae are described from the Campanian of the southern Pyrenees, 15 of them are new. The new genus Amphigibbula is introduced and the genus Chilodontoidea is renamed as Hudledonta. Apparently several trochid lineages with living species can be traced back into the Late Cretaceous. This regards the Eucyclinae, Margaritinae, and Solariellinae, and the Tegulinae with some reservations. Among the groups examined here, only the members of the Trochinae appear to be of rather different character than their mod­ ern representatives. The fossil record of the Umboniinae can go far beyond that of the Late Cretaceous and connect even to Palaeozoic genera. The 15 new species are: Eucyciomphalus reminiscencius, Calliotropis torallolensis, Calliotropis seguris, Ilerdus pyrenaeus, Eucycioscala cretacea, Hudledonta nicolae, Danilia kosslerae, Margarites kasei, Margarites nieiseni, Margarites kowalkei, Tectus quinteroi, Thoristella marshalli, Suavotrochus ponsi, Ethalia vinxae, and Protorotella herberti. Each entry is accompanied by the author and date of availability, by the name of the type species, by a lithostratigraphic or biostratigraphic and geographic reference for the type species, by a family assignment and by an age indication of the type species at the Period level (e.g. MCAM, LDEV). A second listing of these names is taxonomically arranged in families with the families listed alphabetically, higher level classification being outside the scope of this work.
