(1) Because of various deadlines related to publishing the weekend bulletin, this is my first opportunity to acknowledge the appoint- ment of Robert Deeley as Bishop of Portland. I am eager to meet him and to join everyone in welcoming him to Maine. His appointment becomes “official” at the installation Mass scheduled for February 14. (2) Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest: With the help of priests who live fairly close to us, we have been able to post- pone using this ceremony at least through January 26. I will keep you informed if circumstances change. If it happens that no weekend Mass is possible at a scheduled time―emergencies due to illness or storms excepted―the bulletin will indicate what Adoration of the Magi to expect so people can plan accordingly in case they wish to travel elsewhere for a Vocations: "God chose us before the world Mass. FAITH FORMATION Welcome back!

This weekend and throughout this week all of our programs will resume for the new year. Family Catechesis & St. Philip's on 1/5 – St. Margaret's on 1/6 – Youth Ministry on 1/5 – RCIA (for both adults and teens) on 12/8

Thank You, Catechists! As we begin a new season of faith formation, we would like to extend a huge mid-year “Thank you” to all of our volunteer catechists who are the backbone of our programs. In the words of Pope Francis himself, “It’s a beautiful experience educating others in the faith, even though it can be difficult, it requires a lot of work and you don’t always see the results you hoped for! Helping children to get to know and love God more and more deeply is one of the most beautiful educational adventures you can have.”

If you know a catechist in our parish, please offer them a word of gratitude sometime this week!

Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D., Introduced as 12th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland on Wednesday, December 18, in Portland

PORTLAND―The Most Rev. Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D., of the Archdiocese of Boston, was introduced as the 12th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland at a morning news conference on Wednesday, December 18, at the Diocesan Chancery building on 510 Ocean Avenue in Portland. The date of Bishop Deeley’s Installation Mass will be Friday, February 14, 2014, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

“Today marks the beginning of a new relationship,” said Bishop Deeley to the assembled media, clergy and diocesan staff on Wednesday. “Whenever I start anew, I remind myself that I am building on the efforts of others, and I can only move things forward if I find out where things are and then learn where we might go. I often use the image of a moving train to describe this situation. This wonderful diocese has been serving the people of God for 160 years. It has been proclaiming God’s love in Jesus Christ through all those years, well served by , priests, religious and laity. It carries out this task in parishes, schools, social service agencies, hospitals and colleges. I am climbing on a moving train. It will be my task to move through the train observing, listening and sharing ideas with those who are doing the work of God in this beautiful state.”

Bishop Deeley, 67, was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Boston on January 4, 2013, and has served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Boston since September 1, 2011. His appointment as Bishop of the Diocese of Portland by Pope Francis was announced on Wednesday at 6 a.m. EST at the Vatican.

“The responsibility he now gives me is great, but we know that God is good,” said Bishop Deeley. “He gives us no task without giving us the grace to accomplish it. Though I only have had a few days to acquaint myself with the work of the diocese, I did get the opportunity to review the quinquennial report. This is the report submitted to Rome every five years to inform the Holy Father of the work of each diocese. I was so happy to see in that report that some specific tasks close to my vision of the need of the Church are highlighted as goals for the Diocese of Portland: an increase of vocations to the priesthood and a strengthening of parishes as places where evangelization is an intentional value. We can only be a Eucharistic community if we can gather for Mass, and for that we need priests. One way in which we encourage young men to consider the priesthood is to strengthen parish communities where the love of God is celebrated in worship and in charity. That work of charity to which we dedicate ourselves as the community of the Church, the care of the poor, the sick, and the needy in our midst, is the most important way in which we show forth our gratitude for the love that God, in His own abundant mercy, showers on us. I look forward, then, to being your shepherd as we work together to strengthen the work of the Church by making the name of the Lord Jesus known in our words and in our deeds of charity throughout this great State of Maine.” EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Bishop Richard J. Malone, the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Portland, who has served as Apostolic Administrator of the diocese since being installed as the Bishop of Buffalo in August 2012, entered the seminary with Bishop Deeley in September 1964. Bishop Malone says he believes an “exemplary shepherd" has been sent to the Catholic community of Maine.

“I’m thankful to God for this appointment and thankful to the Holy Father,” said Bishop Malone on Wednesday. “Bishop Deeley comes to a great diocese with a rich history. Popes have spoken about the New Evangelization, a new wave of sharing the good news and joy of Jesus Christ. I know that is very much in Bishop Deeley’s mind and in his heart as he begins.”

Following the news conference, Bishop Malone took Bishop Deeley on a tour of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception before visiting with staff at Catholic Charities Maine.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., Bishop Deeley grew up in Belmont, Mass., as the fourth in a family of five sons. His parents, Michael and Mary, now deceased, were born in County Galway, Ireland. His family belonged to Sacred Heart Parish in Watertown, Mass., and Bishop Deeley attended in North Cambridge. Following high school, he entered Cardinal O’Connell Minor Seminary in Jamaica Plain to discern a vocation to the priesthood. After two years of college, he received a Theodore Basselin Foundation Scholarship and began philosophy studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., from which he graduated in 1968. In 1972, he earned a degree in Theology (S.T.B.) from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Following a year of continuing studies in theology, he returned to Boston and was ordained to the priesthood on July 14, 1973, at his home parish, Sacred Heart in Watertown. His first local assignment was as associate pastor at St. Bartholomew parish in Needham. In 1978, with his appointment as Secretary to the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Boston, Bishop Deeley began a ministry in the Tribunal which would last for over twenty years, the last ten of which he served as Judicial Vicar (1989-1999). Throughout that period, apart from his years of graduate study in Rome in Canon Law, he lived at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish in Newton and St. Brigid Parish in Lexington where he was able to provide priestly presence and assistance. He was named a of Honor (Monsignor) on December 13, 1995.

Bishop Deeley was named pastor of St. Ann Parish in the Wollaston section of Quincy in 1999. He assumed the presidency of the Canon Law Society of America in 2000. He went to Rome in September 2004 to assist as an Official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Then, he served at the Congregation until being named Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Boston in the summer of 2011. Additional resources from Wednesday’s news conference can be found at the new diocesan website, www.portlanddiocese.org.
