MARTIN JONES, pianista (lnglaterra) Martin Jones ha sido uno de los pianistas más reconocidos de Gran Bretai'ía desde 1968, año en que fue reconocido mundialmente tras obtener el premio Dame Myra Hess. Ese mismo año hizo su debut en el Queen Elizabeth Hall de Londres y en el Camegie Hall de Nueva York y desde entonces ha sido solicitado para presentar recitales y conciertos en ambos lados del océano Atlántico. 4 Es un artista prolífico en grabaciones y su extensa producción de discos para Nimbus Records incluye la integral para piano de Mendel sohn, Brahms, Debussy, Grainger, Szymanowski (elegida como mejor grabación instrumental en 1996 por la revista española CD Compact) y las sonatas de Alun Hoddinott. Oiremos obras de algunos de los compositores más conocidos de la música occidental como son Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Félix Mendelssohn y Edward Elgar, cuatro compositores de los cuales, en ténninos histórico-estilísticos, solamente Mozart pertenece al periodo clásico, pero a quienes el público en general no duda en denominar como 'clásicos'.

    The Elgar Society JOURNAL FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE MARCH 2001 Vol.12 No.1 ELGAR AND WARLOCK (PHILIP HESELTINE) Barry Smith [Until recently Barry Smith was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cape Town, and is presently Organist and Master of the Choristers at St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town. He is founder and director of the St George’s Singers, and has made frequent recordings for radio, television and compact disc. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and the Guild of Church Musicians. A noted authority on Peter Warlock, his writings include the widely acclaimed biography Peter Warlock : The Life of Philip Heseltine (OUP, 1994), and Frederick Delius and Peter Warlock : A Friendship Revealed (OUP, 2000). He has also edited a four-volume collection of Warlock’s miscellaneous writings about music (Thames Publishing).] On the surface the coupling of the names Elgar and Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) would seem rather far-fetched. Just as there is little of the modal, ‘pastoral’ or ‘folk-song’ elements in Elgar’s music, so are there few traces of nineteenth century German Romanticism in the music of Warlock. Yet, if one delves deeper into their characters and their music, there was much in common between these two composers. Both were self-taught, both felt at times alienated from society, both suffered from bouts of depression, and both have a completely original, uniquely personal quality displayed in their compositions. Besides the innate yet really indefinable ‘Englishness’ of their music, a work by Elgar (despite the obvious influences of the German Romantic school) has a stamp all of its own just as a piece by Peter Warlock (in spite of his early obsession with the music of Delius and later van Dieren and Bartók) has a musical language that is absolutely his and his alone.

Attended the Royal College of Music where his teachers were Charles Stanford and William Rockstro. Started his musical career as a trombonist but spent the remainder of his life as a composer, teacher and administrator. He achieved great fame for his symphonic suite "The Planets."     COMPOSITORES INGLESES 1.INTRODUCCIÓN Tal y como establece la regulación del Plan de Fomento del Plurilingüismo en Andalucía, los centros educativos que participen en Proyectos Bilingües deben adaptar el currículo incorporando aspectos relativos al país extranjero de que se trate así como elaborar los materiales didácticos necesarios para llevar a cabo dicho proyecto. A continuación proponemos una relación de compositores ingleses cuyo estudio puede ser integrado en los programas de la asignatura de Música de la ESO, en los centros que participen en estos proyectos en la modalidad de Inglés. Realizaremos una breve reseña biográfica junto con una serie de audiciones recomendadas y su discografía. 2.LOS COMPOSITORES 2.1. Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) Es considerado uno de los mejores compositores de su época. No se sabe mucho de sus primeros años, pero se piensa que fue niño de coro en alguna catedral donde probablemete adquirió sus conocimientos musicales y aprendió a tocar el órgano. Según los primeros datos de que disponemos, en 1532 era organista del priorato de Dover, puesto que abandonaría para trabajar en la iglesia de St Mary at Hill en Londres (1537- 38). El siguiente paso en su carrera fue a 30 kilómetros de Londres, en Walham, en la iglesia abacial de los agustinos, puesto que ocupó durante un tiempo muy breve, pues se hallaba en marcha la supresión de los monasterios ordenada por Enrique VIII. Desempeñará un nuevo trabajo en la Catedral de Canterbury y a los dos años será nombrado cantor de la Capilla Real trabajando como organista y compositor, puesto en el que permanecerá durante cuarenta años, hasta su muerte.
