Her incredible intellect, voracious curiosity, outstanding ability for drawing together disparate strands, and unceasing drive to learn more and know more have been an inspiring example over the past four years. This thesis owes much of its existence to her and her comments, recommendations, edits, and support. Thank you also to Ellen Wurtzel for guiding me through my first large-scale research paper in my third year at Oberlin, and for encouraging me to pursue honors. Shelley Lee has been an invaluable resource and advisor in the daunting process of putting together a fifty-some page research paper, while my fellow History honors candidates have been supportive, helpful in their advice, and great to commiserate with. Thank you to Steven Plank and everyone else who has listened to me discuss Britten and the Aldeburgh Festival and kindly offered suggestions.

  • ARSC Journal
A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

  • Elgar, Cello Concerto in E Minor
Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 i. Adagio; Moderato ii. Lento; Allegro molto iii. Adagio iv. Allegro; Moderato; Allegro, ma non troppo; Poco più lento; Adagio Edward Elgar enjoys a curious reputation in his own country. To many, he is the composer of overtly nationalistic music such as Pomp and Circumstance, the musical incarnation of Edwardian imperialism. Although early works such as the Enigma Variations and Imperial March garnered him praise and fame, it is his later works from 1918-1919 that are much more autobiographical in content – none more so than the Cello Concerto in E minor. The Concerto was mostly composed between 1918 and 1919 at Brinkwells, a cottage in the Sussex woods where he wrote three other chamber works – the Violin Sonata, String Quartet and Piano Quintet. Like these other Brinkwells compositions, the Cello Concerto is a deeply introspective work which reveals much about the composer’s state of mind: an aging artist concerned about his waning popularity, his wife’s failing health, and reflecting on the horrors of the First World War. Despite a grossly under-rehearsed première at the Queen’s Hall on 27 October 1919, it has since been established as perhaps the finest cello concerto in the repertoire, alongside Dvořák’s, and the only work of Elgar’s to enjoy regular performances outside the English-speaking world. The Cello Concerto is an emotionally draining work not only for the players but also the listener, its overwhelming mood one of melancholy and autumnal world-weariness. The first movement opens with a declamatory, grandiose statement by the soloist leading, in almost improvisatory style, into a lilting melody; there is a wistfully lyrical middle section before the opening melody returns.

Meanwhile, pop music fans can dismiss classical music lovers as elitist snobs, out of touch with reality and hopelessly “square.” Fortunately, music isn’t so black and white, and such classifications, especially of new music, are becoming ever more anachronistic. With the benefit of time, much of our country’s greatest music, once thought to be merely “popular,” is now taking its rightful place in the category of “American Classics.” I was educated in an environment that was dismissive of much of our great American music. Wanting to be regarded as a “serious” musician, I found myself going along with the thinking of the times, propagated by our most rigid conservatory student in the 1970’s, I grew work that studiously avoided melody or key academic composers and scholars of up convinced that Aaron Copland was a signature. the 1950’s -1970’s. Copyright Yvonne Chen 2019 Yvonne Chen: Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto ii ABSTRACT Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto by Yvonne Chen This document is a comprehensive study of Witold Lutoslawski’s Piano Concerto (1987-88), a masterpiece of the post-modern era. A biographical look into Lutoslawski’s fifty year gestation with the ideas for the music shows the inspirations, genesis, and processes of materials used in the piece, which straddles tradition and modernity in refreshing ways. An analysis of the work clarifies the many points of inspiration – from the pianism of Chopin to the woodwind timbres of Stravinsky, and his use of ad libitum sections to support his pragmatic approach to notation or his development of “chain form.” Following Lutoslawski’s ideas about music perception, this document includes performance observations from recordings including those by the work’s dedicatee and the composer himself. Finally, I provide a practical guide for pianists to discern and approach the technical and musical difficulties of the piece in Part Four. Yvonne Chen: Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Many thanks to Yuri McCoy, friend, colleague, collaborator, organist-arranger extraordinaire, and birthday fellow, who was the first to introduce me to this piece. Without his enthusiasm for this piece and his persistence, I might have never come across it, let alone learn it. It is to him I have to thank for having the patience for spirited conversations while we figured out the piece note-by-note together in many rehearsals, and I want to thank him for taking it on the road with me to share it with people in Houston, Washington, DC, and Charleston thus far.

  • Menuhin Competition Returns to London in 2016 in Celebration of Yehudi Menuhin's Centenary
Menuhin Competition returns to London in 2016 in celebration of Yehudi Menuhin's Centenary 7-17 April 2016 The Menuhin Competition - the world’s leading competition for violinists under the age of 22 – announces its return to London in 2016 in celebration of Yehudi Menuhin’s centenary. Founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983 and taking place in a different international city every two years, the Competition returns to London in 2016 after first being held there in 2004. The centenary event will take place in partnership with some of the UK’s leading music organisations: the Royal Academy of Music, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Southbank Centre, the Yehudi Menuhin School and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. It will be presented in association with the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Radio 3 which will broadcast the major concerts. Yehudi Menuhin lived much of his life in Britain, and his legacy - not just as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, but as an ambassador for music education - is the focus of all the Competition’s programming. More festival of music and cultural exchange than mere competition, the Menuhin Competition in 2016 will be a rich ten-day programme of concerts, masterclasses, talks and participatory activities with world-class performances from candidates and jury members alike. Competition rounds take place at the Royal Academy of Music, with concerts held at London’s Southbank Centre. 2016 jury members include previous winners who have gone on to become world class soloists: Tasmin Little OBE, Julia Fischer and Ray Chen. Duncan Greenland, Chairman of the Menuhin Competition comments: “We are delighted to be bringing the Competition to London in Menuhin’s centenary year and working with such prestigious partners.
