FAIR TRADE ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand ( F TAANZ ) is a charitable organisation. FTAANZ is a member based body for all individuals and organisations interested in, and supportive of, fair trade. FTAANZ seeks to increase awareness of fair trade; assist producers from developing countries, especially in the Asia and Pacific regions, to access Australian and New Zealand markets; and support the implementation of the Fairtrade Certification and Labelling System. WHY FAIR TRADE? The advantages of current international trade practices are not en- joyed by all people in the world. People in developing countries are particularly disadvantaged, it is estimated that more than 1.4 billion people live in extreme poverty ( on less than NZ$2 a day ) Fair trade is about giving disadvantaged people power: by paying producers and workers fair prices for their work, by helping them gain the skills and knowledge they need to develop their businesses and to operate in the global economy, and by challenging unfair trading prac- photograph by Kay Maerits© tices. It is about providing a fair go, not charity. Together we can create more awareness of internation- al consumer power and offer New Zealanders an opportunity to make real change through supporting fair trade activities and buying fair trade products. WHAT IS THE FAIRTRADE LABEL? The FAIRTRADE Certification Label is a ‘ seal of approval ’ that appears on products that meet inter- nationally agreed Fairtrade standards. Fairtrade is unique in that it is an independent certification whose purpose is to tackle poverty and enable the empowerment of marginalised producers in developing countries. Fairtrade certification achieves this in the following ways: Fairtrade is the only certification system that provides producers with fair and stable prices. Producers receive a price, that cover the costs of sustainable production. On top of stable prices, producer organisations are paid a Fairtrade Premi- um – additional funds to democratically invest in social or economic develop- ment projects in their communities. Through Fairtrade, producers can request pre-financing from buyers and enter into long-term, stable contracts. Fairtrade provides the stability that rural families need to survive and plan for the future. Producers jointly own and manage Fairtrade Labelling Organizations Inter- national (FLO), the global umbrella body for Fairtrade and are involved in de- cisions regarding overall strategy and setting Fairtrade prices, Premiums and Look for the FAIRTRADE standards. Label on products WHAT IS THE WFTO LABEL? It identifies an organisation which has fair trade at its core. It is only awarded to organisations that are members of the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). It means standards are being implemented regarding working conditions, wages, child labour and the environment. These standards are verified by self- assessment, mutual reviews and external verification. It is an organisational label — not a product label. Use the quick reference to identify which suppliers in your region have the specific products you are seeking. Some businesses can deliver New Zealand-wide or may have offices in several regions, so in addition to the local businesses check other suppliers as well. Descriptions in the listings should give you a good idea as to whether a stockist can meet your needs. Contact businesses or visit their websites if you need more information. If you have any further queries about fair trade or this Purchasing Guide, contact FTAANZ or visit the website at www.fairtrade.org.nz.
