  • Keyboard Music Is
Seventeenth-Century Keyboard Music in Dutch- and German-Speaking Europe David Schulenberg (2004, updated 2021) Keyboard music is central to our understanding of the Baroque, particularly in northern Europe, whose great church organs were among the technological and artistic wonders of the age. This essay treats of the distinctive traditions of keyboard music in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands before the time of Johann Sebastian Bach and other eighteenth-century musicians. Baroque keyboard music followed in a continuous tradition that of the sixteenth century, when for the first time major composers such as William Byrd (1543–1623) in England and Andrea Gabrieli (ca. 1510–1586) in Italy had created repertories of original keyboard music equal in stature to their contributions in other genres. Such compositions joined improvised music and arrangements of vocal and instrumental works as the foundations of keyboard players' repertories. Nevertheless, the actual practice of keyboard players during the Baroque continued to comprise much improvisation. Keyboard players routinely accompanied other musicians, providing what is called the basso continuo through the improvised realization of a figured bass.1 On the relatively rare occasions when solo keyboard music was heard in public, it often took the form of improvised preludes and fantasias, as in church services and the occasional public organ recital. Hence, much of the Baroque repertory of written compositions for solo keyboard instruments consists of idealized improvisations. The capacity of keyboard instruments for self-sufficient polyphonic playing also made them uniquely suited for the teaching and study of composition. Thus a second large category of seventeenth-century keyboard music comprises models for good composition, especially in learned, if somewhat archaic, styles of counterpoint.

www.fuerstenfelder-orgelkonzerte.de Sehr geehrte Konzertbesucher! The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

The Peace of Utrecht meant in this sense a new international order, not only from a political point of view, but most particularly in regard to cultural transfers. The study of the historical-musical documentary heritage, preserved today in areas of the Iberian and Latin American context (often called panhispanic), increasingly throws new light on such exchanges and practices of this musical and cultural environment in which some prominent figures such as Domenico Scarlatti and José de Nebra are considered the bearers of a much broader and extended reality. see also Ezquerro Estebán, González Marín, Yáñez Navarro, Carvalho Mendes Dos Santos Saturday 12-07, 9.15 am Transalpine Geminiani Chair: Christopher Hogwood Participants: Enrico Careri, Peter Holman, Mark Kroll, Peter Walls In the introduction to Geminiani Studies (Bologna: Ut Orpheus, 2013), Christopher Hogwood noted: “Dilemmas and disagreements are also beginning to appear – a sign of health in research and a symptom of ‘cognitive discord’ to be encouraged.

TUNING AND TEMPERAMENT IN SOUTHERN GERMANY TO THE END OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. VOLTM I JOSEPH VICTOR POLLARD Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. University of Leeds, Department of Music. April, 1985. i ABSTRACT. In an age when consistency between the macro and the micro were believed to indicate sure signs of God1s eternal truth, the anomalies which crop up as soon as a comprehensivet interdependent theory of consonance and harmony is attempted must have been a source of bewilderment and embarr-assment,to Renaissance and Baroque theorists and musicians. Composite instruments such as human voices in concert have no difficulty in making pitch adjustments necessary to achieve consonance, but the keyboard with its twelve pre-set notes is inhibited. The history of temperament is an account of the struggle to endow the keyboard with something approaching the versatility of the human voice. German theorists and musicians were leaders in the recognition of the need to compromise between purity of interval and harmonic freedom. Part 1 of the dissertation traces the development of temperament from Schlick to Werckmeister, but concentrates on the seventeenth century. It attempts to show how temperaments became obsolete as musical vocabulary widened, and how, at least in Werckmeister's casey temperaments were assessed not only for their faithfulness to the accepted standards of consonancet but for their ability to give to certain keys certain affective characteristics. The music of several southern and central German composers is considered in varying degrees of detail. The most detailed study is of the music of Froberger, an important predecessor of, and influence upon, J.
