Luule Või Vabadus Poetry Or Freedom LUULE VÕI VABADUS POETRY OR FREEDOM Performatiivne luuleõhtu Performative poetry evening Võru 2015 Performatiivsed luuleõhtud „Luule või vabadus“ toimuvad Võrus Kilo- meeter Skulptuuri festivalil 4., 5., 18. ja 19. juulil 2015. aastal. Luuleõhtute korraldamist on ajendanud kaks Võruga seotud tegevus- liini. Esiteks, Lydia Koidula, kes noore luuletajana söandas saata oma luulekogu „Emajõe ööbik“ Võrru Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldile ar- vustamiseks. Lauluisa ja Koidula 7 aastat kestnud kirjavahetus algas 1867. aastal, Koidula oli siis 23-aastane, Kreutzwald 63. Koidula luule- produktsioon on andnud eestlastele tänaseni olulised tekstid, nagu „Mu isamaa on minu arm!“, „Sind surmani!“, „Puhtad pihud“, „Teretus“ jpt. Teine oluline aspekt on see, et Võru noored ei kartnud 1987. aastal võtta enda peale Eesti iseseisvumisliikumist. Lisaks Vabadussõjas lan- genud sõjameeste haudade taastamisele Võru kalmistul, korraldati mit- mesuguseid vastupanuaktsioone. Üks lihtne, kuid samas emotsionaal- ne väljaastumine toimus Kreutzwaldi pargis Lauluisa mälestussamba jalamil, kus Vaba-Sõltumatu Noortekolonn Nr. 1 korraldas Lydia Koi- dula sünnipäeva puhul 24. detsembril 1987. aastal Koidula luuleõhtu. Juulis 2015 püütakse taastada Kreutzwaldi kuju juures luulelugemise situatsioon, mida saadab raamatuke Koidula isamaaliste luuletuste- ga. Küllap tajume isamaaluulet tänapäeval vabade eestlastena vabas ühiskonnas pisut teistmoodi kui eesti inimesed ärkamisajal 1860ndatel aastatel või 1980ndate teisel poolel. Aga kuidas? The performative poetry evenings Poetry or Freedom will take place as part of the Kilometre of Sculpture exhibition in Võru on 4, 5, 18 and 19 July in 2015. The poetry evenings were inspired by two Võru-related lines of activity. First, Lydia Koidula, who as a young poet dared send her poetry collec- tion The Emajõe Nightingale to Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald in Võru to be reviewed. The correspondence between Kreutzwald and Koidula started in 1867 and lasted seven years. Koidula was 23 and Kreutzwald 63. Many of Koidula’s poems are still significant for Estonians today; for example, My Fatherland Is My Beloved!, Thine Till Death!, Pure Palms, Greeting, etc. The second important input comes from the fact that the young people of Võru were not afraid in 1987 of initiating the freedom movement in Estonia. Besides restoring the graves of soldiers killed in the War of Inde- pendence (1918–1920) in Võru cemetery, various resistance actions were organised. A simple but emotional event took place in Kreutzwald park at the foot of his monument, where on the occasion of Lydia Koidula’s birthday, the Free-Independent Youth Column No. 1 organised a poetry evening on 24 December 1987. In July 2015, this poetry reading event will be re-enacted at Kreutzwald’s statue, and a booklet of Koidula’s patriotic poems will be published. Today, as free people in a free society, we probably perceive patriotic poetry a bit differently than the Estonians during the Awakening period in the 1860s or in the second half of the 1980s. The exhibition When the Stage Lights Came On... tells ... the multi-layered story of a theatre by displaying the folio of prints Wanemuine 100, which focuses on the beginning of the Vanemuine Theatre. The folio ties together two important moments in time: the birth of Estonian language theatre and the beginning of the 1970s, when the local theatre life was influenced by its Soviet environment but also by the begin- nings of the theatrical renewal. Inspired by these layers, the folio is the impetus and central exhibit of the present exhibition. The students of the Estonian Academy of Arts who curated the exhibition travelled from the world of art to the world of theatre and brought a small piece of Estonian theatre history to the museum. In all probability, the folio, which is part of the Tartu Art Museum’s collections, has never been exhibited. This allowed us to unravel the collages from the folio like detectives and to delve into their sources to bet- ter understand the backstory of the folio. As a result of the research, this playbill that you are reading contains most of the photos that form the basis of the collages. Archival materials tell a multifaceted story that covers the period from the birth of Estonian language theatre up to the founding of professional theatre. It includes images of the people associated with theatre, the public festivals, the costumes and the theatre buildings. The foundation of the Vanemuine Theatre took place during the phase of active construction of Estonian nationality. It focused on a national narrative, on connecting individual events and celebrating anniversaries that assisted in asserting a collective sense of continuity.

Inimkond kasvab, aga meid, eestlasi, jääb tasapisi üha vähemaks. Üksteise järel kolime kalmistuvaikusesse, kus on ees ootamas sajad tuhanded kaasmaalased. Igaühel neist on meile midagi öelda – kel rohkem, kel vähem. See raamat on väike teejuht eesti kultuuri kalmistul. Inimestel, kellest siin juttu, on igal juhul midagi öelda. • Estonia Above All: the Notion and Definition of Estonia in 19Th Century Lyrics
Estonia above All: The Notion and Definition of Estonia in 19th Century Lyrics Õnne Kepp In the literature of small nations created by authors whose fate, like that of the whole of the nation, has always been dependent on militant and self-interested neighbours or the ambitions of great powers, the relations between the writer, his people and country should be of special significance. Even taking a cursory glance at Estonian poetry, one notices the frequent use of the words ‘Estonia’, ‘Estonian people’, ‘the Estonian language’ and ‘an Estonian’. In different periods and under different conditions these have been understood, expressed and treated differently. e semantics of the fatherland and its usage is central in the ideology of national movements, and therefore it is of interest to observe its occurrence dur- ing the period of the national awakening and the formative years preceding it. How was the notion and definition of Estonia shaped in Estonian poetry? Being first and foremost associated with the concept of fatherland, separating ‘Estonia’ from the fatherland is quite a violent enterprise. But still, ‘Estonia’ car- ries a heavier semantic accent, while ‘fatherland’ functions rather as a romantic myth and a symbol. In addition, Ea Jansen makes a third distinction and brings in ‘home(land)’ by saying ‘fatherland is “the home of a nation”’ ( Jansen 2004: 5).1 us, ‘fatherland’ has a special emotional content for a nation. ‘Estonia’ as a con- cept is more neutral and definite. As a rule the following discussion is based on the poetic use of the word ‘Estonia’, without breaking, if need be, the association with its twin notion in the coherent (patriotic) unit.
