CHAPTER TEN INSECTS 10.1 The insect fauna of south central Seram The insect fauna of Seram is extraordinarily diverse and abundant. Forbes, 1885: 291, writing in his A Naturalist's Wanderings, reports that on Ambon alone insects - particularly beetles - are numerous and of great variety. By the end of the nineteenth century, Ribbe [Ribbe, 1892: 46] had recorded some 19,000 different species, including 10,000 butterflies, and reckoned to collect 300 insects daily. Today the number of certain species for all orders of insects must be many more than this. Clearly, only a very few specimens compared with the total number of known species were col- lected in the field, but even so they constitute the largest single group of specimens. Most importantly they include all common species encountered by the Nuaulu. A checklist of insect species for which specimens were col- lected in south Seram is presented in table 17. 10.2 Nuaulu categories applied to insects Nuaulu terms for insects represent the largest single group in their animal inventory and provide the ethnographer with the greatest problems in presentation and analysis. 10.2.1 makasisi popole The Nuaulu name for this predaceous insect, in AM `capung', relates to its habit of feeding on insects (such as mosquitos) immediately above fresh water, and to the touching of the surface of the water or tips of plants with its tail. Maka comes from makae (`hard'), referring to the head; and sisi, meaning 'to tap, touch or scrape'. Thus eresisi waene is 'to scrape (the) water', where ere is a pronominal vowel prefix indicating a non-human actor. -

Sydney, May 2, I947 PREFACE. The accompanying Catalogue of the Cerambycidae is the first, dealing solely with Australian genera and species, to be published since that of Pascoe in 1867. Masters' Catalogue of the Described Coleoptera of Australia, 1885-1887, included the Cerambycidae, and was based on the work of Gemminger and Harold. A new catalogue has been badly needed owing to the large number of new species described in recent years, and the changes in the already complicated synonymy. The Junk catalogue, covering the Coleoptera of the world, is defective in many respects, as well as being too unwieldy, and too costly for the average Australian worker. Many of the references in the Junk catalogue are inaccurate, synonymy misleading, and the genera under which the species were originally described omitted, and type localities are not quoted. In this catalogue every care has been taken to ensure accuracy, and the fact that it has been used, in slip form, over a number. -

Approximately one third of all forest insect species worldwide depend directly or indirectly on dying or dead wood (i.e., they are saproxylic). They are a highly threatened ecological group but the status of many species remains undocumented. There is an urgent need to develop a better appreciation for the diversity and ecology of saproxylic insects so as to inform management strategies for conserving these organisms in tropical forests. Two of the historically better studied beetle groups, Cerambycidae and Buprestidae, are highlighted with a brief discussion of the methods for studying them and their ecology, and a systematic attempt to survey these two beetle groups in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Singapore, is described. From a comparison with the historical data, it is inferred that the decline of the saproxylic insect fauna must be happening at a rate that would certainly be considered alarming if only it were more widely noticed. Finally, the implications for overall conservation of the insect fauna and of the reserve are considered. Keywords. This research investigated the diversity and abundance of longhorn beetles found in several types of plantation forest. The beetles were collected using Artocarpus traps in September and October 2014. Sixteen species of longhorn beetle were found; these belonged to 7 tribes and 12 genera. The highest diversity and evenness of longhorn beetles were found in the natural forest (H=1.80, E=0.75) and the lowest of both measures in the Agathis forest (H=0.556, E=0.232). The highest similarity index (0.75) was found between the natural forest and the pine forest. Five of the species found, i.e. Sybra binotata, Sybra fuscotriangularis, Ropica strandi, Acalolepta rusticatrix, and Pterolophia melanura were highly abundant. Two of these, R. strandi and S. fuscotriangularis, as well as 4 other species found, Cleptometopus montanus, Myagrus javanicus, Notomulciber notatus, and Exocentrus artocarpi, are only found in Java. New larval host plant records are presented for Dihammus fasciatus fasciatus (Montrouzier), Parapepeotes togatus (Perroud), Platycmnium pustulosum (Pascoe) (viz. Ficus spec., Moraceae) and Chlorophorus austerus (Chevrolat), Dihammus australis (Boisduval) and Eczemotes granulosus (Guerin-Meneville) [viz. Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex A. Juss.) Muell. Arg., Euphorbiaceae]. Both plant species have nutritious sweet sap in their stems and branches which act as beetle attractants. Sharp and Muir (1912) published a work on a comprehensive survey of the organs in the Coleoptera, and discussed the phylogeny of this order. Recently, Jeannel and Paulian (1944) proposed a new system of classification of the. order, basing on not only characters generally used but also on the structure of male genitalia upon which they made a detailed comparative anatomy. On the other hand, Muir (1915, '18), Singh Pruthi (1924a, '24b) and Metcalfe (1932) reported on the development of the organs of some beetles. As regards the male genitalia of the Cerambycidae, except the works above mentioned, there have been published only a few comparative studies by Bugnion (1931) and Zia (1936). The organs of the Cerambycidae have not yet been studied in detail, and have scarcely been used as the taxonomic character. The author studying a comparative anatomy of the male genitalia of 101 Japanese species of Cerambycidae, confirmed that the results are generally coincided with the traditional classification of the group. -

The various species tend to be uncommon and virtually nothing is known about their biology and behaviour. Recently one of us (TJH) has coUected a small series (of both males and females) of one species, Gnoma boisduvali Plavilstshikov (Figs 1 & 2) from northern Papua New Guinea and observations on its biology, behaviour and sexual dimorphism are recorded here for the first time. Comments are also provided on the general distribution of the beetle in Papua New Guinea, locaHties listed for Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya and a map provided. -

Sci.) 45 : 841 - 855 (2011) Checklist of New Records of Subfamily Lamiinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Northern Thailand Suksawat Ponpinij*, Praparat Hormchan and Valuli Rojanavongse ABSTRACT Collections were made of longhorn beetles, subfamily Lamiinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), during 2004–2008 from specimens caught on flowers, trees and light traps from northern Thailand for taxonomic studies. Specimens were compared with samples from the Department of Agriculture, Royal Forest Department, Kasetsart University, the private collection of Bro. Amnauy Pinratana and by expert identification. NOERDJITO2) and SUGIARTO3) Abstract Gunung Halimun National Park is one of the biggest natural forests in West Java. The park is well known for its rich flora, with a total area of about 40,000 ha. The national park consists of three types of forests, namely lowland forest, sub-montane forest, and montane forest. The research site is located in the eastern part of the park, and the research area, which coveres only about 2 ha, is at about 1,000 m asl. We report 128 species of longicorn beetles occurring at the research site of Gunung Halimun National Park from 1997-2002, including illustrations of all species, host records, distributions, some biological information and faunal features of the longicorns. Of the 99 species identified here, 43 are endemic to Java and 10 are new records for Java. A Catalog and Bibliography of Longhorned Beetles from Borneo (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae, Disteniidae and Vesperidae) Electronic Version, 2013.1 by Daniel J. Heffern Abstract A catalog and bibliography are presented for the longhorned beetles of Borneo. All genus-group names (including subgenera and synonyms) and species-group names (including synonyms) of taxa known from Borneo are summarized. The type species for each genus-group name is specified with the method by which its type species was designated. Species-group names include the name of the genus used in the original description. The full distribution of each species or subspecies which occurs in Borneo is included. Citations of original descriptions and bibliographies are provided for all taxa. Species which have been incorrectly recorded from Borneo are listed. Introduction In recent years, taxonomists have separated longhorned beetles into three families: the Cerambycidae, Disteniidae and Vesperidae. These beetles are popular with collectors, entomologists, and naturalists, for many reasons including their striking appearance, diversity, relationship with host plants and interaction with other species, including mimetic behavior. Borneo, which has not been heavily collected, still contains many species that are undescribed or difficult to identify. In the past 20 years, Mr. Steven Bosuang has provided many specimens of all Coleoptera to the scientific community which has resulted in dozens of publications concerning the fauna of Northern Borneo. The purpose of this catalog is to present a consolidated list of all known longhorned beetles from Borneo. Some unpublished records are included, mostly from the collection of the author, which have been identified by the author or other specialists.
