A Catalog and Bibliography of Longhorned Beetles from Borneo (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae, Disteniidae and Vesperidae) Electronic Version, 2013.1 by Daniel J. Heffern Abstract A catalog and bibliography are presented for the longhorned beetles of Borneo. All genus-group names (including subgenera and synonyms) and species-group names (including synonyms) of taxa known from Borneo are summarized. The type species for each genus-group name is specified with the method by which its type species was designated. Species-group names include the name of the genus used in the original description. The full distribution of each species or subspecies which occurs in Borneo is included. Citations of original descriptions and bibliographies are provided for all taxa. Species which have been incorrectly recorded from Borneo are listed. Introduction In recent years, taxonomists have separated longhorned beetles into three families: the Cerambycidae, Disteniidae and Vesperidae. These beetles are popular with collectors, entomologists, and naturalists, for many reasons including their striking appearance, diversity, relationship with host plants and interaction with other species, including mimetic behavior. Borneo, which has not been heavily collected, still contains many species that are undescribed or difficult to identify. In the past 20 years, Mr. Steven Bosuang has provided many specimens of all Coleoptera to the scientific community which has resulted in dozens of publications concerning the fauna of Northern Borneo. The purpose of this catalog is to present a consolidated list of all known longhorned beetles from Borneo. Some unpublished records are included, mostly from the collection of the author, which have been identified by the author or other specialists. An effort has been made to provide proper spellings, combinations, and literature references for the pruposes of nomenclatural stability and basic information to assist anyone who wishes to do further research. For convenience in this catalog: Families, subfamilies and tribes are in boldface type and listed in an assumed phylogenetic sequence similar to some older catalogues, rather than just alphabetically Valid genus-group names are in boldface type and listed alphabetically under tribes Valid species-group names are in boldface type and listed alphabetically under genera Synonyms and mis-spellings are italicized and listed from oldest to newest Type species are listed in italics for genus-group names and the method of how the type species was designated is noted The general format used in this catalog is as follows: [Genus] [Author], [year]:[page # of description] (type species: Genus species Author, year, designation method) [Synonym] [Author], [year]:[page # of description] (type species: Genus species Author, year, designation method) [species] [subspecies] [Author], [year]:[page # of description] [original genus] [distribution] [synonym] [Author], [year]:[page # of description] [original genus] Numerous authors have published more than one article in a single year which may create confusion when bibliographic citations are given. This author has attempted to indicate the publications in a sequential system such as Pic, 1926a; Pic, 1926b; etc. Due to difficulty in establishing actual publication dates, there are cases when the assignments of an “a”, “b”, “c”, etc. after the publication year have been arbitrary. In a perfect cataloging system, a complete worldwide LONGHORNED BEETLES OF BORNEO bibliography for longhorned beetles would exist with all works listed under each author chronologically. Yearly, the number of species known from Borneo increases. A formal publication of this catalog is not anticipated in the near future since it would be quickly out-of-date. Posting this work on the Internet is more practical until more of the major groups of Bornean longhorned beetles can be studied and revised. Acknowledgements My sincere appreciation is extended to Mr. Steven Bosuang (formerly Steven Chew) for the opportunity to examine many interesting and unique specimens from Sabah, that have led to the description of almost 200 new species in the last 15 years. I thank Mr. Carolus Holzschuh for providing or verifying identifications for hundreds of Bornean species. The following people in Sabah are acknowledged for providing permits, property access and other assistance to Steven Bosuang: Mr. Petin Kilou, District Forestry Officer of Nabawan, Sabah Forestry Department; Mr. Hiroshi Nomura, President, Jusco Travel in Sabah; Dr. Lee Ying Fah, Deputy Director of Sabah Forestry Department and Head of the Forest Research and Diversity Centre, Sepilok; and Dr. Laurentius Nayan Ambu, Director, Sabah Wildlife Department, Kota Kinabalu. This catalog required assistance from many professional and non-professional colleagues.
