2018 Annual Report | 3 TEACHERS AND PARENTS AS PARTNERS

“Communication with parents is the key to our youngest students feeling comfortable with their transition to school for the first time, or to a school that is new for them. As the lead teacher in the preschool classroom at Cotting, I view parents as essential to the educational team that we put together to support students.

Children as young as three years old are learning what it means to be part of a daily school routine; we want it to feel positive and for them to experience success. Planning a child’s transition from Early Intervention to Cotting’s School Age Program at an early age provides us with the opportunity to identify skills and plan for student outcomes that will benefit each child throughout their Alada Caughey, school years.” Preschool Teacher – Alada Caughey, Lead Preschool Teacher, Lower School

Curriculum at Cotting School

4 | Cotting School Alpona Saha, Program Assistant

“My daughter Lily attended and has since graduated from Cotting School. Lily began as a student in the Cotting School Day Program when she was 16 years old and graduated when she turned 22. I witnessed a dramatic shift in her growth and learning through her years at Cotting. She gained skills for independence and I had never seen her so excited about school.

I pursued my interest in working with students with disabilities and now work at Cotting as a Program Assistant. I get to see the strength of Cotting’s academic program and I’m able to provide support to both the students and teaching staff. Every day I am impressed by the teachers I work alongside, and I have a unique view of their dedication to students and the larger Cotting School community.”

– Alpona Saha, Program Assistant and former Cotting Parent

“I love how Cotting enables my daughter to have a learning experience that’s comparable to her other siblings in the public-school system. The dedication and support of the Lily Saha, staff, coupled with the available activities to provide access and dignity for the students is unsurpassed!” Cotting Alumna – Cotting School Parent, 2018

THE WHOLE CHILD AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY

“Cotting School has supported incredible growth for Jacob in many areas of his life, including his academics, and his social and emotional needs. Having Jacob at Cotting School has also had a positive impact on our family. Thanks to the activities the school provides (family days, BBQ, sports) Jacob’s brother Jared has been part of his twin brother’s life at school, and has learned that he is not the only person with a brother who has special needs. Now Jacob has a better relationship with his brother and I can say that Cotting has helped my two children, and our whole family. We are so pleased to see that Jacob is learning to be happy as he is. Jacob has built a community of friends, which he did not have before. He is excited to do different activities and spend time socially with others.”

– Wendy Chong-Lee, Jacob’s Mother Jacob, Middle School Student

6 | Cotting School

To Jacob:

Hard-working, determined, patient, independent, kind, generous, respectful. These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of you – and of all that you’ve accomplished over the past few years. I remember when you first started at Cotting School, Jacob – and how your every action told us that you were craving a school that saw the real you… You wanted a school where you were not limited by the things you couldn’t do, the things you struggled with. Instead, you wanted a school that saw your potential, and knew that you were capable of doing so much. A school that knew you were smart – and knew how to help you prove this to the world. And prove it you have!

You set a goal for yourself to become a better reader, writer, and speller, and you have worked SO hard to make this a reality. I am constantly blown away by your A+ scores on your weekly spelling tests, and your insightful comments and observations during “Book Group” discussions. But more importantly, I am impressed by how you treat others. You go out of your way to make sure that no one is left out or excluded, and you speak up when you think things are unfair. You have become a self-confident young man, who knows what he is capable of - and is not afraid of working hard to get there.

As your time in Middle School comes to an end, Jacob, I can honestly say that it has been a true pleasure to have been your teacher the past few years – and I look forward to seeing all that you will accomplish in Upper School.

Best Wishes,

Ms. Mayo Teacher, Cotting School

2018 Annual Report | 7 STRONG FOUNDATION AND SUPPORT FOR WHAT COMES NEXT

“I love the age range of students (3-22) that I get to work with as an Occupational Therapist at Cotting School. I’ve been doing it for 25 years! I am always excited by the collaboration between students and the dynamic team of Teachers, Parents, Medical staff and Therapists. The team develops solutions that help students achieve their individual education and therapeutic goals.

Many aspects of Occupational Therapy promote skills needed in the educational setting, and also in life, promoting independence. A three-year-old student playing with an engaging toy is also working on balance, fine motor and visual motor skills. This activity can develop skills that will encourage participation in the classroom, at Amy Houghton, home and in the community. Occupational Therapist

Constantly thinking about the skills a student will need next to gain independence helps me to develop a plan for therapy. Access to educational tools, including technology, helps me to make recommendations for solutions that will help students reach their goals. The work students do in OT helps prepare them for what comes next in life whether it is academic, vocational, or social.”

– Amy Houghton, Occupational Therapist “One of the biggest strengths at Cotting is full inclusion for all. They specialize in finding the students’ strengths and they capitalize on them.”

-Cotting Parent, 2018

8 | Cotting School “I look towards the future and see a career for myself at Cotting School. For the past four years I’ve been a Program Assistant at Cotting which means I assist a lead teacher in a classroom…but there’s so much more. For students who need the support that Cotting School has to offer, everything is here, and the community is unbelievably supportive!

In addition to assisting students in the classroom, I work with students in after school programs and I coach basketball. Getting to know students in many different settings helps me offer them support so they can be more independent.

Cotting’s “Circle of Friends” program is one that I get excited about and lead with a colleague. Supporting students in creating and building authentic friendships is very meaningful. The Circle of Friends program supports that goal by taking a different age level of students off site each Friday afternoon and evening for an activity appropriate for the season, such as bowling, mini-golf, going to the mall or the movies. Supporting students in building and creating authentic friendships is essential.” David Largenton, Program Assistant – David Largenton, Program Assistant

After school, Cotting students explore new hobbies and forms of self-expression by choosing from a huge selection of options. After school offerings change periodically, but typically include:

Art Circle of Friends Prom Basketball Dance Club Senior trip Best Buddies Dances Soccer Board Games & Puzzles Drama Club Special Olympics Boys Club Girls Club Track and Field Challenger Little League Golf Teambuilding Baseball Horseback Riding Tennis Cheerleading iPad Club Workout Club Chess Club Jewelry Making Chorus Photography

2018 Annual Report | 9 HISTORY AND FORWARD THINKING

“Through my younger years I attended many schools, but Cotting stands out as my favorite for reasons I still reflect on today. I met my favorite teacher and developed my interests in reading and writing. I graduated from Cotting School in 2011 and followed that up by taking classes at Northshore Community College, I graduated with my Associates Degree in 2017.

In addition to supporting my academic interests, everyone at Cotting helped me focus, advance my self-advocacy skills, and find the resources I needed once I graduated. I’m now pursuing a job opportunity that will incorporate my love of writing and photography.” Michael DiCiero, – Michael DiCiero, Class of 2011 Cotting School Alumnus

Alumni Events and Belonging The bonds Cotting students create last a lifetime, and we love the memories and stories that come up when we get together. We are growing in our capacity to host alumni events that interest former students. Several popular gatherings have included:

• Annual Alumni Reunion • Roadrunner Basketball Games “I felt like I was my old self again. I feel • Cotting Alumni Game Night • Mini-Reunion Dance like Cotting is my home, a home I can always go back to.” – Lauren Zolla

10 | Cotting School Small 8:1:1classroom size Ann Buckley, Curriculum (student:teacher:aide) ratio Specialist & Middle School Director

“As a former Middle School teacher, I appreciate where students ages 11-14 are coming from. Often students coming to Cotting have struggled with the expectations of a typical middle school setting. Sometimes they have experienced isolation or struggle academically and/or socially. Many students this age have difficulty managing a demanding schedule of multiple teachers and format changes.

In my current role as Curriculum Specialist and Director of the Middle School I’m proud to be a part of Cotting School’s forward-thinking academic leadership team. Every day is exciting to me because I’m in an intellectually stimulating environment and Cotting School strikes the right balance of support and challenge for the students we serve.”

– Ann Buckley, Curriculum Specialist and Middle School Director

2018 Annual Report | 11 MORE THAN A DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM

“Katherine has been a student in the Cotting School Day Program since 2012, and in 2017 she applied to the HOPEhouse program — a new program option created in 2017.

Knowing that Katherine would be graduating soon we wanted a program that would continue to help her develop skills such as increased responsibility for preparing meals, doing laundry, and coordinating transportation that would complement her academic work. HOPEhouse has been an amazing environment for Katherine. Socially she has grown incredibly, becoming a better communicator with her friends, housemates, and the HOPEhouse staff. The self-advocacy skills she’s gained will serve her well once she graduates.”

– Ann O’Connor, Katherine’s Mother

Young adults living and learning at HOPEhouse enroll in full academiccan courses, explore work, volunteer, or try out a local Community College.
