The states of AK, AR, DE, GA, HI, IL, IN, KY, MD, MA, MO, NC, NH, NJ, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VT, VA, and WV had no cities or towns in reservations. AIAN: American Indian/Alaska Native. AoiC: Alone or in combination with other races Methodology: This analysis uses data from the U. S. Census Bureau. Data for population, land area, and place type were downloaded from the American Factfinder tool. Using advanced search, data were selected by geographic summary level “269--Place/Remainder (or part) within State within AIA/ANA/HHL” and further narrowed by “city,” “town,” or “village.” Maps use Census TIGER/Line shapefiles for American Indian area geography and places. The places layer was clipped by the reservation layer in ArcGIS to eliminate places outside of reservation areas to provide a clearer visual of the geographic overlap. Results: Including Oklahoma Tribal Statistical Areas (OTSA) and federal Indian reservation and trust land, 549 cities, towns, and villages overlapped or were within tribal areas in 22 states, encompassing 2,100 square miles, and almost 1 million people (954,424 people), of whom at least 85 percent were non-Indian. Excluding OTSAs, 138 cities, towns, or villages overlapped or were within reservation boundaries, totaling 227 square miles and with 214,544 people, of whom at least 87 percent were non-Indian. State Detail The remainder of this analysis explores state level detail for states with many cities, towns, or villages inside or overlapping reservation areas. Information on type of city, town, or village is included as well as total population (all races), the American Indian/Alaska Native (alone or in combination with other races) population, and square 1 US Census Bureau; 2010 Census, Tables P1, P6, and G001, Summary Level 269; generated by the National Congress of American Indians; using American FactFinder <http://factfinder2.census.gov>; (5 April 2015) mile area of the city/town/place within the reservation area. Cities having populations more than 50 percent non- Indian are highlighted in light red. Maps throughout this appendix were created using 2012 TIGER/Line Shapefiles for American Indian areas and 2013 TIGER/Line Shapefiles for places from the US Census Bureau, Geography Division, using ESRI ArcMAP, Version 10.1.
