Dear Council:

Indiana University-Purdue University at Port Wayne has for some time been in need of a professional organization to tie together the Business and Economics Department of Indiana University and the Supervision Department of Purdue University.

Iota Lambda Rho has organized to achieve this end and has developed a program which I fully believe is consistent with the goals and objectives with the International Business Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi.

The students through this organization are attempting to attain better understanding not only between the students and faculty, but between the two universities. The fraternity attempts to provide students with a greater understanding of their fields of interests by having speakers and tours of businesses and industries in the surrounding area to accomplish this worthwhile end.

On behalf of the administration of Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, I highly recommend that these young men and women be chartered by the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. Sincerely, n ( ][/ o^Jcp. ^I^%7F Maid Schwartz ^^ Chancellor

Dear Coimcil Members ,

The members of Iota Lambda Rho have become quite active on catrpus, especially this fall semester. They began organizing last spring se mester and had Mike Eikenberry from Fort Wayne National Bank as their first quest speaker; they also toured International Harvester, thus meeting some of the goals and objectives of Delta Sigma Pi.

During fall semester they have become more well known both on campus and in the community. Mr. Dale Ferrier, President of Indiana Wire Die Company was their first guest speaker and was quite impressive. Other speakers included Joan Uebelhoer, County Auditor, and Bill Whitten, broker. Their tours included General Telephone Company in August, Peter Eckrich business offices in September; and Chicago Federal Reserve Board of Trade, and First National Bank in October. The representatives of Peter Eckrich were quite impressed with these young men and women and have invited them to return.

The frate2mity members are also becoming active with other orga nizations on canpus for greater unity and promotion of social activities. They are currently sponsoring, along with the other Greek fraternities and sororities, a formal dance on October 29. They are also planning to participate in the annual Penny Carnival to raise money for our Day Care Center. We are hoping this will alleviate apathy on caitpus and involve the students in the many activities provided.

I would highly recommend that the members of Iota Lambda Pho be come charter members of the national business fraternity. Delta Sigma Pi.

12 Fort Wayne, Indiana

13 History

14 Fort Wayne began as a remote trading outpost established by the French at the

headwaters of the Miami River in 1686. From that time on, it has had an interesting, if not

turbulent history.

After being under the rule of France and England, President George Washington and

Congress of the United States authorized the permanent fortification at the headwaters of

the Miami and appointed Major General "Mad" Anthony Wayne to command it in 1792.

The military garrison did not begin to become a town until about 1819, three years after

Indiana attained statehood. Once it began however, growth came rapidly. The Wabash-

Erie canal, the longest canal in the United States, was started in Fort Wayne in 1832.

Fort Wayne has a rather special folk-hero by the name of John Chapman. This eccentric man covered the countryside with appleseeds. When he died, "Johnny Appleseed" was buried in Fort Wayne.

After the desperadoes, the Indians and the folk heroes emerged the city of Fort Wayne.

It's commercial and folk history are diverse. Among the industries in Fort Wayne are names such as International Harvester the largest producer of heavy-duty trucks in the United States; The Magnavox Co.; General Electric; and Lincoln National Life

Insurance Co. the tenth largest life insurance company in the U.S.

Between the rich heritage of Fort Wayne and it's people is a community with a warmth rarely found in a city with over two hundred thousand people.

17 were in downtown After operating in separate facilities which, coincidentally , side-by-side Fort Wayne, Indiana and Purdue Universities joined forces in 1964 on the Fort Wayne campus at the junction of U.S. Highway 30 and Indiana Road 37. The two universities share not only the same physical facilities but many of the same courses.

Indiana began offering courses in Fort Wayne in 1917, and Purdue began with industrial training courses immediately afterwards. Even before the move to the present campus, Purdue offered two-year associate degree programs. Indiana also provides associate degree opportunities in its downtown facility. Division of General and Technical Studies. In addition to full degree programs, both universities offer courses which make it possible for a student to start work toward a degree which would be completed on another campus of Indiana or Purdue.

Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne operates under a single Chancellor, Dr. Donald Schwartz. The faculty, staff and student body now have an opportunity to help in the planning of further unification of administrative, academic, and recreational activities on the campus.

During 1973, the first building, Kettler Hall, was joined by three new structures: Neff HaU, which is made up of classrooms, offices, and laboratories; a Library/Learning Resource Center; and a Student Union, which provides recreational, eating and meeting facilities.

The Indiana and Purdue operations in Fort Wayne are parts of larger systems. Indiana has campuses at Bloomington, Richmond, Kokomo, Gary, South Bend, and New Albany. Pur due has campuses at Lafayette, Hammond and Westville. Both provide programs at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Some Purdue courses and programs are offered at I.U. facilities at New Albany, Kokomo, Richmond, and South Bend.

Indiana and Purdue are accredited by national, regional, and professional agencies. Both are members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

The baccalaureate, associate and master's degree programs at the Fort Wayne, campus have been approved by the parent campuses and by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

24 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

25 HISTORY

26 The division of Business Administration, Indiana University at Fort Wayne was initiated in the spring of 1966. At that time students certified to the division numbered 556. Dean John H. Porter and the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee of the School of Business, Indiana University, Bloomington, recommended that 27 courses in business and economics be offered by the division. However, even with regard to relatively large division enroll ment, a degree program was not initiated in any business disciphne until 1968.

From its initial development in 1966 to the present semester, the number of courses offered has gone from 27 undergraduate courses, offered in 39 sections, to a current course listing of 73. Each of the aforementioned 73 courses has been, and will continue to be, offered periodically as student demand warrants.

For the first time in 1968, the Division of Business and Economics conferred the Bachelor of Science Degree upon 83 students while two students received the Master of Science degree. Of the degrees presented, two students graduated with high distinction, five with distinction

The chairmanship of the now "Division of Business" was transferred to D. A. Stonebarger from Dr. Joseph Trosper, who was at that time on a university assignment in Afghanistan. Also, as of July 1, 1970, the Department of Economics joined the Division of Business resulting in the addition of four more faculty members bringing the total faculty to 14 full-time members.

By June of 1971, full-time faculty in the division numbered 16, and of the then available 73 course capability, 37 undergraduate courses were offered in 52 sections. The total number of students graduating with degrees in business was 73 Bachelor of Science and 21 Master of Science degrees. Of those students receiving degrees in 1971, two graduated with high distinction, seven with distinction. Also during this year the Division of Business was decentralized into the following departments: business administration, accounting, economics, finance, and marketing. In 1970-71, the first Sam W. D. Johnston Scolarship was awarded to an accounting student.

In 1972, the divisional offices moved from their temporary location in a modular office building to their current location in the new classroom-office building. D. A. Stonebarger, in his fourth year as division chairman, directed the business and economics program which awarded 96 Bachelor of Science and 32 Master of Science Degrees in 1973-74. In addition, 24 students were inducted into Sigma, the honorary business fraternity, in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements. The spring 1973 semester saw divisional enrollments at well over 850 students.

As noted in the preceding paragraphs, the students attending Indiana University at Fort Wayne are drawn from primarily the Northeastern nine counties of the state. The greatest number of students reside in Allen County and more specifically the City of Fort Wayne. Enrollment data compiled over the 1973-74 academic year indicates that approximately 45% of the students on degree programs in the Division of Business and Economics attend classes on a part-time basis.

27 In that the majority of the currently enrolled students reside within the city of Fort Wayne are to a proper, they subject rather unique environment that may be said to complement academic work in the business and economicx disciplines. Fort Wayne is an industrial and transportation center comprised of business organizations ranging from entrepreneurships to large, multi-national manufacturing corporations. Because of the positive relationship between this division and the business community, students have the opportunity to view first hand what in other situations could only be represented in classroom exercises.
