  • Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth
A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Dana Katz 2016 A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the twelfth-century residences associated with the Norman Hautevilles in the parklands that surrounded their capital at Palermo. One of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval secular architecture, the principal monuments are the palaces of La Zisa and La Cuba, the complexes of La Favara and Lo Scibene, the hunting lodge at Parco, and the palace at Monreale. The Norman conquest of Sicily in the previous century dramatically altered the local population’s religious and cultural identity. Nevertheless, an Islamic legacy persisted in the park architecture, arranged on axial plans with waterworks and ornamented with muqarnas vaults. By this time, the last Norman king, William II, and his court became aligned with contemporaries in the Latin West, and Muslims became marginalized in Sicily. Part One examines the modern “discovery” and reception of the twelfth-century palaces. As secular examples built in an Islamic mode, they did not fit preconceived paradigms of medieval Western architecture in the scholarly literature, greatly endangering their preservation. My examination reconstructs the vast landscape created by the Norman kings, who modified their surroundings on a monumental scale. Water in the parklands was harnessed to provide for ii artificial lakes and other waterscapes onto which the built environment was sited.

  • CORE of SICILY 8 Days to Discover a Gem of History and Nature
CORE OF SICILY 8 days to discover a gem of history and nature D01: ARRIVAL TO CATANIA Catania is Sicily’s second main city for its population and cultural richness. The population survived through the Greeks deportation, the Carthaginians and the stream of lava from Mount Etna. Nowadays Piazza del Duomo, Via Etnea and many of the historical buildings has heightened Catania’s charme. Many structures are built from three-centuries old lava (the black buildings) which, combined with baroque architecture, treats the city a singular darken twisted beauty. Overnight in Catania. D02: ETNA VOLCAN (SOFT TREKKING UP TO CRATER GUIDED ENVIRONMENTAL VISIT) - SIRACUSA Mount Etna is the major and highest vulcano in Europe. Only the cone of the crater rises to 11000 feet above sea level. Plato sailed to Sicily just to catch a glimpse of it in 387 BC. Etna is still an active vulcano and has erupted a dozen times in the past 30 years and more, most spectacularly in 1971, 1982, 2001, 2002 and 2005. Fumes from the top of the vulcano are always a constant companion of Catanese’s days. A trip nearby of the crater depends on Mount Etna’s temperament, but generally it's possible to walk and enjoy this most unique sublime force of nature. Overnight in Siracusa D03: SIRACUSA Syracuse is a jewel of Sicily. Astonishing and wonderful, the great ancient capital of Western civilization at the Greek times was founded in 734 BC. Soon it was the major city of Sicily to compete against Athens in beauty, splendor and power.

[email protected] N.4 Novembre 2014 C O L L A N A S T U D I E S O N C OSMATESQUE P AVE MENTS ~ 2 ~ «…per la sua magnificenza, e bellezza, e per l’apparato di molti ricchissimi ornamenti merita esser anteposta a quante Chiese son oggi in Italia, vecchie o nuove» Tommaso Fazello, Delle due deche dell’historia di Sicilia, 1573 «Templum tam celeberrimum erexit, ut nullum in quasi arce Christiani orbis repertatur illi simile» Bernardo Riera, manoscritto inedito, sec. XVII ~ 3 ~ Capella Regia primum occurrit sumptuosi operis pavimento constrata...

One case in particular concerns the epigraphic characters of Islamic derivation which abound in many media and, specifically, in architectural decoration: in other words, stone, stucco, mosaic, painting and so on. But, if the Byzantine mediation is evident, it is very important to observe that the labour is always local.2 We will look at six churches. They do not constitute a «catalogue», but offer a good «sample» of pseudo-kufic of the 13th century.3 First of all, I wish to present the map of the six churches with frescoes (Fig. 1). Four of them are in Apulia: Gravina (province of Bari), Massafra (province of Taranto), Squinzano (on the road between Lecce and Brindisi) and Otranto (both provinces of Lecce). The other two are in the present-day Lucania (or Basilicata): Matera and the former town of Anglona, near Tursi (province of Matera).4 Furthermore, I wish to specify that three of them (those in Massafra, Gravina and Matera) are rock- churches, small chapels hewn out of the rock, without doors.5Before starting the description of the frescoes and, in particular, of their epigraphic cycles, I wish to say few words about the choise of the expression «pseudo- kufic».
