The Solar System What’s in Our Solar System? • Our Solar System consists of a central star (the Sun), the eight planets orbiting the sun, several dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, meteors, interplanetary gas, dust, and all the “space” in between them. • Solar System: a star (sun) together with all the objects revolving around it (planets and their moons, asteroids, comets, and so on). What’s in Our Solar System? • The word solar comes from the Latin solaris, meaning “of the sun.” Sol is the Latin word for “sun.” • The eight planets of the Solar System are named for Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses. Planetary System Planetary System: a planet with its moon(s), • The Earth and moon are a planetary system. • The word planet comes from a Greek word meaning “wandering.” To the ancients, the five visible planets to the naked eye appeared to move, unlike the other fixed stars that were “fixed.” • Orbit: the path followed by a planet, asteroid, or comet around a star, or a moon around a planet. The word comes from the Latin orbita, meaning a “wheel track.” Planets, Dwarf Planets, Moons, Asteroids, and Comets • Planet: a large body, spherical because of its own gravity, orbiting a star and not sharing its orbit with any other large bodies. • Dwarf Planet: a planet-like body that orbits the sun and does not clear its orbital zone of other massive bodies, and is not a moon. • Moon: object revolving around a planet. The word moon is from an ancient German root meaning “moon” or “month.” Planets, Dwarf Planets, Moons, Asteroids, and Comets • Asteroid: a rocky or metallic object a few feet or a few miles in dimeter. -

The Early Explorers by Andrew J. LePage August 8, 1999 Among these programs were the next generation of Introduction Explorer satellites the ABMA was planning. In the chaos that swept the United States after the launching of the first Soviet Sputniks, a variety of The First New Explorers satellite programs was sponsored by the Department The first of the new series of larger Explorer satellites of Defense (DoD) to supplement (and in some cases was the 39.7 kilogram (87.5 pound) satellite NASA supplant) the country's flagging "official" satellite designated as S-1. Built by JPL, the spin stabilized program, Vanguard. WESTCHESTER AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS MAY 2010 Sky tch Crater Copernicus John Paladini took this image of crater Copernicus with his home-built 6" f/8 refractor (10 frames a second neximager stack of about 100). An impact crater, Copernicus is thought to be about 800 million years old. The crater is 93 km in diameter and about 3700m deep. The crater’s central peaks are visible in the above photo. SELECT LETTERS OF PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY RICHARD GARNETT NEW YORK D.APPLETON AND COMPANY X, 3, AND 5 BOND STREET MDCCCLXXXIII INTRODUCTION T he publication of a book in the series of which this little volume forms part, implies a claim on its behalf to a perfe&ion of form, as well as an attradiveness of subjeâ:, entitling it to the rank of a recognised English classic. This pretensión can rarely be advanced in favour of familiar letters, written in haste for the information or entertain ment of private friends. Such letters are frequently among the most delightful of literary compositions, but the stamp of absolute literary perfe&ion is rarely impressed upon them. The exceptions to this rule, in English literature at least, occur principally in the epistolary litera ture of the eighteenth century. Pope and Gray, artificial in their poetry, were not less artificial in genius to Cowper and Gray ; but would their un- their correspondence ; but while in the former premeditated utterances, from a literary point of department of composition they strove to display view, compare with the artifice of their prede their art, in the latter their no less successful cessors? The answer is not doubtful. Byron, endeavour was to conceal it. Together with Scott, and Kcats are excellent letter-writers, but Cowper and Walpole, they achieved the feat of their letters are far from possessing the classical imparting a literary value to ordinary topics by impress which they communicated to their poetry. -

The LVDC allows engineers to monitor telemetry data during unmanned rocket launches. Significance: Missile Assembly Building AE, commonly called Hangar AE, is nationally significant as the telemetry station for NASA KSC’s unmanned Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) program. Since 1961, the building has been the principal facility for monitoring telemetry communications data during ELV launches and until 1995 it processed scientifically significant ELV satellite payloads. Still in operation, Hangar AE is essential to the continuing mission and success of NASA’s unmanned rocket launch program at KSC. It is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A in the area of Space Exploration as Kennedy Space Center’s (KSC) original Mission Control Center for its program of unmanned launch missions and under Criterion C as a contributing resource in the CCAFS Industrial Area Historic District. -
