(2018). A Study on Lisbeth Salander’s Fear of Intimacy in Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University. Intimacy exists in human relationship. It happens between two individuals or more. However, intimacy is feared by some people. In literary works, fear of intimacy can be experienced by the character. This study discusses the fear of intimacy on Lisbeth Salander from a novel entitled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, written by Stieg Larsson. Lisbeth Salander, a pale, very skinny young woman who experts in internet hack culture but awkward in common social situation, is involved in a mystery disclosure. Salander traumatic experiences with other people result in her rejection towards relationship and human intimacy. The problem formulation is “How does Salander overcome her fear of intimacy?”. The objective of the study is to describe how Salander overcome her fear of intimacy using MacAdams’ theory.

Maarten Valken – Welcome to the Rode Hoed, as this building is called, the red hat. It started out as a hatter’s shop. In the seventeenth century it became a Remonstrant church, although services were officially forbidden at that time, so it became a clandestine church. It remained a Remonstrant church until 1957, the oldest and biggest one in The Netherlands, and since 1990 it has become a debating centre. This conference is already the sixth one since we started nine years ago. We were and still are able to organise them thanks to the financial help of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These conferences have become a unique place to meet, to have longer contacts, especially for publishers who have less and less time to talk to each other personally, but also between publishers and translators, and of course for the Dutch authors to get in touch with both of them. The last conferences we started to send around a survey. It was first meant as a source of ideas, but it also turned out to be a very interesting document for the discussions, and we will probably use them later. In the other room as you might have seen there are Dutch books by the authors who are here: Minka Nijhuis who is sitting here, Marjon van Royen, and Jutta Chorus who is joining us later, she will talk tomorrow.

    STIEG LARSSON A profile by Christopher MacLehose Stieg Larsson died on Kristallnacht in 2004, aged 50. He had done everything that any one man could possibly have done to expose and document and turn back the resurgence of Neo-Fascism in his native Sweden. He worked day and night, sometimes in fear of his life, with a small group of political activists who founded a magazine called Expo. The work and the magazine go on. When he died there was a memorial service for him at which many friends were astonished to discover the scale of his achievements, the range of his friendships, of his journeys, the sheer force that had been exerted by this modest, quiet man in the fields of political and humanitarian endeavour across Europe. His magazine, which received a great many mocking and abusive messages at his dying, did not make a special issue to celebrate his life and work. Its continuing life was and is his deafening and sufficient legacy. A very sophisticated political strategist had died, but a younger and equally committed team to whom he had been a mentor took his place in the front line. Larsson culled his allies from many walks of life. He sought out and made a friend of Mona Sahlin, the leader now of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, at a time when she was being savaged in the media. He called her out of the blue to offer her advice and he became for her what she calls “a living schoolbook ... my university.” Her concerns -- housing, immigrants, xenophobia, class, honour killings, gender -- were concerns of his.

Abstract Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who reported for Novaya Gazeta about the Second Chechen War and the Chechen civilians who suffered as a result, was assassinated at her Moscow apartment building on October 7, 2006. While the Western world mourned the death of this reporter and publicist who was deemed “the conscience of Russian journalism,” the majority of Russians ignored the news and even expressed delight at her death; to them, she was considered more a Westerner than one of their own, and her factual but impassioned reporting seemed to irritate rather than inform.
