All our thanks to the leader and the organisers. Received 5 July 1989. PICCONIA EXCELSA (OLEACEAE) R.O. Gardner The current Auckland City Council Proposed District Scheme lists two Picconia excelsa trees in Remuera at St Kentigern School and at 115 Victoria Avenue that are to be protected for their botanical (rarity) value. This species the Canary Islands olive is not mentioned in most horticultural works. It forms a tree of medium size heavy in foliage with the rough bark and crooked branching typical of its family. Sterile specimens have a deceptive likeness to those of Nestegis spp. even having a waxy bloom on the petioles — (like N. cunninghamii but not N. apetala) (Johnson 1957). The older AK material was first determined by Dr Peter Green of Kew. There are several other individuals in Auckland like the above of good size but almost certainly less than a hundred years old. There are trees at 2 Woodside Ave Mt Eden at 277 Mt Eden Rd and on a farmhouse drive in Ihumatao Rd; there is a AK specimen from the Wilson Home in Takapuna and until recently there was a tree in the crater of Mt St John. Perhaps the importation of Picconia might be the result of a nurserymans recognizing that Canary Islands species should flourish in what is literally the opposite side of the world. -

Notelaea azorica Tut., Notelaea excelsa Ait., Picconia excelsa auct. fl. azor e Olea excelsa (PALHINHA, 1966). Picconia excelsa DC. (SEUBERT, 1844). Pau-branco (PALHINHA, 1966). Esta espécie foi referida pela primeira vez para as ilhas do Pico e S. Miguel por SEUBERT (1844), tendo sido então designado como Picconia excelsa DC. Foi então considerada igual à Picconia excelsa (Ait.) DC. da Madeira e Canárias, sendo mais tarde é revista por Tutin e aceite como uma nova entidade botânica para os Açores, com a denominação Picconia azorica (Tutin) Knobl., Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 11: 1028 (1934) (PALHINHA, 1966). Na historia nomenclatural desta espécie existem ainda designações como Notelaea azorica Tut (TUTIN, 1933 in PALHINHA, 1966), bem com Notelaea excelsa Ait., Picconia excelsa auct. fl. azor. e Olea excelsa (PALHINHA, 1966). Em termos ecológicos é caracterizada como preferindo habitat entre os 300 a 600 m (PALHINHA, 1966) com referências de FRANCO (1984) à sua existência a altitudes que rondam os 700 m. TUTIN (1964) refere que a P. azorica é uma espécie rara que ocupa o estrato arbóreo da Floresta de Louro. Embora existam alguns estudos pontuais acerca da sua ecologia, as preferências ambientais e altitudinais desta planta estão ainda por definir (SJÖGREN, 1973). Distribuição Açores: S. Maria, S. Miguel, Terceira, S. Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores e Corvo. Corologia Planta endémica dos Açores. LAURISILVA OF MADEIRA PORTUGAL The Laurisilva of Madeira is the largest surviving relict of a virtually extinct laurel forest type once widespread in Europe. It is still 90% primary forest and is a centre of plant diversity, containing a unique suite of rare and relict plants and animals, especially endemic bryophytes, ferns, vascular plants, animals such as the Madeiran long-toed pigeon and a very rich invertebrate fauna. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE The UNESCO World Heritage Committee adopted the following Statement of Outstanding Universal Value at the time of inscription: Brief Synthesis The Laurisilva of Madeira, within the Parque Natural da Madeira (Madeira Natural Park) conserves the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest or "laurisilva", a vegetation type that is now confined to the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. These forests display a wealth of ecological niches, intact ecosystem processes, and play a predominant role in maintaining the hydrological balance on the Island of Madeira. The property has great importance for biodiversity conservation with at least 76 vascular plant species endemic to Madeira occurring in the property, together with a high number of endemic invertebrates and two endemic birds including the emblematic Madeiran Laurel Pigeon. Criterion (ix): The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type, which covered much of Southern Europe 15-40 million years ago. The forest of the property completely covers a series of very steep, V-shaped valleys leading from the plateau and east-west ridge in the centre of the island to the north coast. -

Franco being one of the dominant trees in the remaining natural forests. Dendrochronological and dendrometric studies in the Azores mainly focused on non-indigenous trees, either used for timber (e.g., Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) or considered as invasive (Pittosporum undulatum Vent.). Therefore, this study aims to describe the growth ring anatomy of L. azorica, and to understand the relationship between dendrometric traits (e.g., trunk diameter at breast height; tree height), and the number of growth rings. Growth ring anatomy was accessed by wood anatomical preparation of microcore samples while tree age estimation was based on growth ring counts in wood cores taken at breast height and at base. -

The target group are the arthropods, and the main habitat the Laurisilva, the Azorean native forest. Diversification of Azorean arthropod species is affected by island age, area and isolation. However, results obtained for over a decade show that distinct groups are differently affected by these factors, which has lead to the extreme diverse distribution patterns currently observed. Spatial distribution of arthropods in each island may be interpreted as caused by a typical “mass effect”, with many species following a “source-sink” dynamics. -

All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. The Azores archipelago The Azores are a volcanic archipelago located in the middle of North Atlantic Ocean. Together with the archipelagos of Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cabo Verde, they are part of Macaronesia, the “happy islands” (Fernández-Palacios, 2010). The Azorean Islands were discovered by Portuguese naviga- tors in 1427 (Santa Maria), Flores and Corvo being the last islands to be found in 1452. However, accord- ing to old maps its existence was previously known. It is believed that the archipelago received its name from birds that were common in these islands either the Goshawk (Açor in Portuguese) or a local subspe- cies of Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi) that the sailors erroneously identified as goshawks (Frutuoso, 1963). The archipelago is composed by nine main islands and some small islets. The islands are divided in three groups: the eastern group with Santa Maria, São Miguel and Formigas islets, the central group with Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial and the western group composed by Flores and Corvo (Fig.
