Among her other recent honors are a 2009 induction into the Blues Hall of Fame, MOJO Magazine’s Legend Award in 2008 and induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, as well as being an 8-time Blues Music Award Winner. Irma also appeared on HBO’s hit series, Treme, in which she sang with an All Star backing band including Allen Toussaint, who produced some of her best known work. Her version of “Ruler of My Heart” was re-interpreted by Otis Redding as “Pain In My Heart” and her version of “Time Is On My Side” was later covered by The Rolling Stones. “Smokestack Lightning”--Howlin’ Wolf (1956) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by James Segrest and Mark Hoffman (guest post)* Howlin’ Wolf Original release label “Smokestack Lightning” is the perfect distillation of what made Howlin’ Wolf such a powerfully unique artist. Built on a driving, hypnotic, one-chord vamp that subtly accelerates like a steam locomotive, Howlin’ Wolf sings an intense field holler vocal, interspersed with falsetto howls and blasts of raw country blues harmonica. The lyrics, a pastiche of traditional blues lines pared to the bone, are dark and cryptic conveying a mood of metaphysical agony. The musicians, accompanying Wolf with great skill on the recording, are Willie Johnson and Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass, Earl Phillips on drums and Hosea Lee Kennard on piano. A small hit at the time, “Smokestack Lightning” has since become a classic of Chicago blues and an indelible part of the American canon of song. Howlin’ Wolf was born Chester Arthur Burnett on June 10, 1910 in White Station, Mississippi, a tiny railroad stop near West Point in the northeastern part of the state. His parents Leon “Dock” Burnett and Gertrude Young separated when Chester was very young and he was raised by his abusive uncle, Will Young. At thirteen, Wolf fled his uncle’s home, hopping a train to the Mississippi Delta where he reunited with his father and had a loving home at last. At the age of eighteen, Wolf learned to play guitar from Charley Patton the Delta’s first great blues star. A small man in stature and build, Patton was the best guitarist in the Delta, playing with a percussive aggressiveness that was astounding.

His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937, display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including the Faustian myth that he sold his soul at a crossroads to achieve success. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. It was only after the reissue of his recordings in 1961, on the LP King of the Delta Blues Singers that his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style. He is credited by many rock musicians as an important influence; Eric Clapton has called Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an early Influence in their first induction ceremony in 1986. Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

Summer 2006 After the Rain Irma Thomas (Rounder) New Orleans songstress Irma Thomas has endured a lot over the course of forty years in the game. Beginning her career in 1960, Thomas hit a high note with many forward-thinking ladies upon releasing her debut single, “You Can Have My Husband (But Don’t Mess With My Man).” Soon Thomas was able to celebrate the charting of several hits on Billboard, and found herself being covered by the likes of Otis Redding and the Rolling Stones within five years of recording her first song. With a sassy voice that could stop Patti Labelle or Aretha Franklin cold, Thomas has been blazing trails ever since, touring virtually nonstop, running a successful nightclub with her husband and raising a family in between. Her most recent release, After the Rain, finds Thomas exploring a past steeped in blues and gospel, alongside upbeat songs championing women’s independence. “I Count the Tears” resounds with old-school harmonies reminiscent of so many doo- wop songs, where “These Honey Dos” bounds through jazzily, piano and bass asserting themselves as mightily as Thomas’s lyrics addressing an unappreciative partner. “Stone Survivor” shows Thomas in her element, rebuilding and redefining her personal history through sound, where the album’s closer, “Shelter In the Rain,” could easily be taken for a hopeful, piano-driven love letter to her hometown in a post-Hurricane Katrina world.
