It is given in honor of the actor who staged an outstanding performance in the title role while working in the Mexican film industry. In 1947, the 1st and 2nd Ariel Prizes were held, and Domingo Soler and David Silva won the films Barrac and Campeon Sin Corona, respectively. With the exception of 1959-1971, when the Ariel Prize was suspended, the prize is awarded annually.
