Like no other feature in the garden, a small pond of water lilies, cattails and Japanese Koi can transform and ordinary outdoor living space into an oasis. Ancient Egyptians and Far Eastern cultures were of the first to develop water gardens in the landscape. It was common to find lotus plants, papyrus, water lilies and other aquatic plants used to accent and focus on man’s relationship with nature. Since that time, Europeans have traditionally incorporated water gardens into the landscape and used Roman and Greek statuary to create formal pools and spectacular fountains such as those found at Tivoli Gardens in Rome and Versailles in France. Still a common practice in European countries, water gardens are finding a place in American gardens today. Fast becoming a favorite hobby for experienced and beginning gardeners, a water garden can be quite sophisticated with a series of waterfalls and pond levels, as interesting as a single 3 to 4 foot pool in the corner of the yard, or as simple as a half wooden barrel filled with floating plants and small water lilies. Installation of a Water Garden The most popular type of water garden installed today uses a synthetic liner to form the sides and bottom. There is very little time involved in installing this type water garden because these materials are lightweight, portable and adaptable to a variety of shapes and sizes. However, for one which will give years of enjoyment you will need to begin by making some careful plans. -

Folk Song in Cumbria: a Distinctive Regional
FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one. -

Observation is a key tool to re-learn. We need to know what is going on already so that we don’t make changes we will later regret. Use and value diversity - Diversity allows us to build a strong web of beneficial connections. Monocultures are incredibly fragile and prone to pests and diseases – diverse systems are far more robust and are intrinsically more resilient. Relative Location and Beneficial Connections – View design components not in isolation but as part of a holistic system. Place elements to maximise their potential to create beneficial connections with other elements. Multi-functional Design – Try and gain as many yields or outputs from each element in your design as possible. Meet every need in multiple ways, as many elements supporting each important function creates stability and resilience. Perennial systems – minimum effort for maximum gain Create no waste - The concept of waste is essentially a reflection of poor design. Every output from one system could become the input to another system. We need to think cyclically rather than in linear systems. Unmet needs = work, unused output = pollution. Stacking – Make use of vertical as well as horizontal space, filling as many niches as possible. -

Nowadays, this term is widely used in landscape architecture terminology and depicts a ground- level space covered by ornamental plant material. The designing parterres are generally limited to the central city zones and entrances to the valuable architectonic objects, such as government buildings, courts, museums, castles, villas, etc. There are several main types of parterres set up in France, during the period of baroque, and the most famous one is the parterre type “broderie” with the most advanced styling pattern. Nowadays, French baroque parterres are adapted and communicate with contemporary landscape design styles, but some traits and characteristics of originals are still easily recognizable. In this paper, apart from presenting a short overview of designing parterres in general, the main focus is based on designing a new parterre on the main city square in the city of Bijeljina in the Republic of Srpska. The design concept relies on principles known in the history of landscape art but is, at the same time, adjusted to local conditions and space purposes. The paper presents the current design of the selected zone – parterre on the main city square in Bijeljina and proposes a new design strongly influenced by the “broderie” type of parterre. For creating a new design proposal we have used the following software AutoCad (for 2D drawings) and Realtime Landscaping Architect (for more advanced presentations and 3D previews). -

Propagation from Seed: Planting seeds: As a general rule for planting depth, plant seeds 2.5 times their width. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Potting soil has ideal drainage and moisture retention and is free from weed seeds and diseases. Direct seeding: Fast growing garden plants (often with larger seeds) are usually planted directly into their permanent location. For example, beans, pumpkin, radish, Seed in nursery: Plants that are slow growing in the begining may be easier to start in 3-4 in. pots in the nursery and then planted out when about 6 in. tall. Ex. kale, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, or if fruit trees potted into bigger pots till they are 1 to 3 ft tall. Planting fruit trees from seed: Many varieties of tropical fruit trees seeds may die if allowed to dry out. Planting seeds as quickly as possible is a good rule of thumb. -

Revisiting Riverside: A Frederick Law Olmsted Community Chapter 1 The Development of Landscape Architecture Landscape Architecture is a profession that involves human interaction with nature. It entails human impacts upon the land, such as the shaping of landform and the creation of parks, urban spaces, and gardens. Landscape architecture can also include the mitigation of human impacts upon nature. For example, landscape architects are often involved with the restoration of or preservation of areas for wildlife and for the continued success of natural processes (i.e. stormwater collection and purification, groundwater recharge, water quality, the survival of native plants and plant communities, etc.). Landscape architecture is often inspired by social needs. Olmsted’s work was a reaction to the uncleanly, overcrowded conditions of cities in the late nineteenth-century and the need for people to escape from these conditions and restore themselves in a natural setting. This same ethic inspires many of today’s landscape architects who seek to provide safe, inviting parks within cities and to develop housing that responds to the needs of the residents. This housing could be in the form of improved public housing, developed through dialog with residents and informed by the successes and failures of past public housing trends. Landscape Architect’s involvement with planning efforts range from complex and inspired plans such as Riverside in 1868 - 1869, Garden Cities (Radburn, NJ 1928), the Greenbelt town design of the 1930s, and today’s ecologically and culturally sensitive development models, to the typical, ubiquitous, suburban developments that have evolved since the early twentieth century. The scope of landscape architecture ranges from broad projects (town planning and large, national parks) to narrow (small parks, urban plazas, commercial centers and residences). -
