Secondly, it is recommended to have participated in a workshop practising the protocol. And thirdly, one need knowledge of applying cognitive interweaves (as taught in an accredited EMDR training), because the presented procedure can also be used as cognitive interweave within the EMDR Standard protocol. Introduction The rationale of coping with Anger, Resentment and Revenge can be explained as follows: When people are reminded of disturbing memories or certain persons, it can lead to fierce emotions; sometimes “ the bucket will even overflow”. There are two kinds of emotions which can still be triggered by thinking of those negative experiences or persons. Therefore, there are also two buckets which can overflow. draw a bucket titled “Powerlessness and Fear” draw another bucket titled “Anger, Resentment and Revenge” One bucket contains all emotions concerning powerlessness, grief, fear and fright; all vulnerable, internalized emotions. The other bucket is filled with emotions like anger, resentment and sometimes even revenge; all ‘external directed’ emotions. When we look at the Powerlessness and Fear bucket, how full is it at this moment? About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

Indignation, Appreciation, and the Unity of Moral Experience Uriah Kriegel Forthcoming in Ethical Theory and Moral Practice (special issue on moral phenomenology) Introduction/Abstract Moral experience comes in many flavors. Some philosophers have argued that there is nothing common to the many forms moral experience can take. In this paper, I argue that close attention to the phenomenology of certain key emotions, combined with a clear distinction between essentially and accidentally moral experiences, suggests that there is a group of (essentially) moral experiences which in fact exhibits significant unity. 1 The Diversity of Moral Experience Some of our mental states embody moral commitments, some do not. Thinking that the table is brown and deciding to read this rather than that novel, for instance, have no obvious moral dimension; believing that genocide is wrong and deciding to donate to an anti-corruption charity, in contrast, do. Of our morally committal mental states, some are consciously experienced but many are not. For most of our lives, the belief that genocide is wrong is not consciously entertained; in contrast, a decision to donate to charity is typically taken consciously. For now, let us call the domain of mental states which both embody moral commitment and are consciously experienced ‘moral experience’ – and the study of this domain ‘moral phenomenology.’ Is there anything common to all moral experiences, in virtue of which they are moral experiences? One is forgiven for being antecedently skeptical, and several philosophers have developed explicit arguments for a negative answer (Yasenchuk 1997, Gill 2008, Sinnott-Armstrong 2008). In the remainder of this section, I discuss Sinnott- Armstrong’s argument. -

To address this question, here we examine how Emotions subjects respond affectively to both second- and third-party norm violations in an economic game. Our results Moral outrage indicate that while second- and third-parties respond to norm violations by punishing wrongdoers similarly, they report experiencing distinct emotional states as a result of the violation. Specifically, we observed a cross-over interaction between anger and moral outrage depending on the party's context: while anger was more frequently reported for second- than for third-party violations, moral outrage was more evoked by third-party than second- party violations. Disgust and sadness were the most prevalently reported emotions, but their prevalence were unaffected by party contexts. These results indicate that while responses to second- and third-party violations result in similar punishment, they are associated with the expression of distinct affective palettes. -

Digital Emotion Contagion

Gross – Stanford University, Department of Psychology *Correspondence: [email protected] Key Words: emotion, emotion contagion, digital media, social media 1 People spend considerable time on digital media, and during this time they are often exposed to others’ emotion expressions. This exposure can lead their own emotion expressions to become more like others’ emotion expressions, a process we refer to as digital emotion contagion. This paper reviews the growing literature on digital emotion contagion. After defining emotion contagion, we suggest that one unique feature of digital emotion contagion is that it is mediated by digital media platforms that are motivated to upregulate users’ emotions. We then turn to measurement, and consider the challenges of demonstrating that digital emotion contagion has occurred, and how these challenges have been addressed. Finally, we call for a greater focus on understanding when emotion contagion effects will be strong versus weak or non-existent. 2 The Ubiquity of Digital Emotion Contagion In 2014, PNAS published a study that sought to demonstrate emotion contagion on social media using an experimental design [1]. In this study, the content that Facebook users saw was manipulated without their knowledge to be less negative or less positive. Users’ emotions were evaluated with a dictionary-based program that counts the number of positive and negative words in each text [2]. Results indicated that those who were exposed to less negative or less positive emotions produced less of these emotions themselves. This is the only published study that has manipulated users’ emotions without their knowledge on a digital media platform.
