Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation. -
John Exshaw.3
Page 27 JESS FRANCO, or THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE John Exshaw El sueño de la razon produce monstruos (The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters) Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Los Caprichos, plate 43, (17971798) In his book, Jess Franco: El sexo del horror, the Spanish film historian Carlos Aguilar closes a chapter with the following remark: “It is really true that, in his own way, Jesus Franco represents a damn peculiar case . .” (1) That Jess Franco can produce such a perplexed (and exasperated) response in a compatriot who was, after all, engaged in writing a booklength biographical and critical overview goes some way to illustrate the difficulties encountered in trying to come to grips with Jesús Franco Manera, a director whose staggering output of something like 180 films in fortyfive years contrives to make words like ‘maverick’, ‘obsessive’, ‘enigma’, or even ‘deranged’, seem sadly inadequate. Some might question whether it is worth “coming to grips” with Franco at all. His detractors are legion, and, despite the publication of three serious studies (2) and a veritable host of admiring magazine articles, it is fair to say that Franco and his films still fly well below the radar of respectable critical attention; considered, when considered at all, to be beneath both notice and contempt. In part, of course, this attitude is simply a hangover from what might be termed ‘La Plus longue nuit des auteurs’, the Cahiers du Cinémainspired revolution which, having done sterling work in elevating the importance of the Seventh Art, then proceeded, like an earlier French Revolution, to overstay its welcome, descending into a kind of intellectual Terror in which certain directors of genre films were elevated to the Pantheon (particularly if they laboured in the more obscure depths of the Hollywood system) while others (mainly European) were simply ignored. -

Drawing on feminist and psychoanalytic theory, I read the vampiress’ bite as reworking the positions of the female vampire and her companion within a male dominated Symbolic and consider how both women ingest language only to expel it transformed as that which speaks their desire. Carmilla , Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 novella, serves as the referential center of this project and frames my interpretations of Crashaw’s 17 th century Teresian poems, Coleridge’s “Christabel,” and filmic adaptations of Carmilla . -

Przypadek Jesúsa Franco [ Eurotrash as a Practice, Reading Material and Film Culture. The Case of Jesús Franco] edited by M. Adamczak – „Cz owiek i Spo ecze Qstwo”, vol. XXXIV, Pozna Q 2012, pp. 131-149. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISBN 978-83-232-2518-8. ISSN 0239-3271. The article discusses Jesús Franco’s directing work as a film auteur ’s work . His oeuvre, which con- tains about 200 pieces, is often classified under the depreciating name of ‘paracinema’ or ‘eurotrash’. The author depicts Franco’s activity in the field of popular cinema (which is not to be mistaken for commercial cinema) as an incessant struggle with censorship. His style of filmmaking can be considered as symptomatic of a certain special moment in film history: the decade between the Hollywood studio system’s collapse and the video boom. This article shows how the so-called exploitation movies, which was Franco’s main area of activity, fructified with a new model of film reading and culture as well as new modes of production and cinematic practice. [email protected] 812-335-9868 (home) This syllabus is available in alternative formats upon request. Overview The vampire is one of the most popular and enduring images in the world, giving rise to hundreds of monster movies around the globe every year, not to mention novels, short stories, plays, TV shows, and commercial merchandise. Yet the Western vampire image that we know from the film, television, and literature of today is very different from its eastern European progenitor. Nina Auerbach has said that "every age creates the vampire that it needs." In this course we will explore the eastern European origins of the vampire, similar entities in other cultures that predate them, and how the vampire in its look, nature, vulnerabilities, and threat has changed over the centuries. This approach will provide us with the means to learn about the geography, village and urban cultures, traditional social structure, and religions of eastern Europe; the nature and manifestations of Evil and the concept of Limited Good; physical, temporal, and societal boundaries and ritual passage that accompany them; and major historical and intellectual periods (the settlement of Europe, the Age of Reason, Romanticism, Neo-classicism, the Enlightenment, the Victorian era, up to today).
