Przypadek Jesúsa Franco [ Eurotrash as a Practice, Reading Material and Film Culture. The Case of Jesús Franco] edited by M. Adamczak – „Cz owiek i Spo ecze Qstwo”, vol. XXXIV, Pozna Q 2012, pp. 131-149. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISBN 978-83-232-2518-8. ISSN 0239-3271. The article discusses Jesús Franco’s directing work as a film auteur ’s work . His oeuvre, which con- tains about 200 pieces, is often classified under the depreciating name of ‘paracinema’ or ‘eurotrash’. The author depicts Franco’s activity in the field of popular cinema (which is not to be mistaken for commercial cinema) as an incessant struggle with censorship. His style of filmmaking can be considered as symptomatic of a certain special moment in film history: the decade between the Hollywood studio system’s collapse and the video boom. This article shows how the so-called exploitation movies, which was Franco’s main area of activity, fructified with a new model of film reading and culture as well as new modes of production and cinematic practice. Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

  • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

The AFC reallocated roughly $220,000. The session was different, however, from ones in years past, most notably because $45,000 was allocated to a new project entitled “Campus Improvement/Monon Bell,” and because the session did not live up to its conflict- alluding name. “I was really proud of the guys on AFC tonight,” Stipes said. “We did a good job of going through each club’s budget fairly and uniformly. We made minimal changes to clubs that weren’t also made to other clubs. Fairness is something we need to uphold; I’ve stressed that from the beginning.” Some of the allocations are things that get money every year: a $500 Wally Costume Deposit, the Student Activi- ty Coordinator’s Salary ($8,420), and the National Act, which received a $52,000 allocation. However, the most alluring allocation is the $45,000 one mentioned before, on which Stipes elaborated.

Prohlášení: Prohlašuji, ţe jsem tuto diplomovou práci vypracoval samostatně a výhradně s pouţitím citovaných pramenů, literatury a dalších odborných zdrojů. V Praze, dne 15. ledna 2015 …………………………..

Page 27 JESS FRANCO, or THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE John Exshaw El sueño de la razon produce monstruos (The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters) Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Los Caprichos, plate 43, (17971798) In his book, Jess Franco: El sexo del horror, the Spanish film historian Carlos Aguilar closes a chapter with the following remark: “It is really true that, in his own way, Jesus Franco represents a damn peculiar case . .” (1) That Jess Franco can produce such a perplexed (and exasperated) response in a compatriot who was, after all, engaged in writing a booklength biographical and critical overview goes some way to illustrate the difficulties encountered in trying to come to grips with Jesús Franco Manera, a director whose staggering output of something like 180 films in fortyfive years contrives to make words like ‘maverick’, ‘obsessive’, ‘enigma’, or even ‘deranged’, seem sadly inadequate. Some might question whether it is worth “coming to grips” with Franco at all. His detractors are legion, and, despite the publication of three serious studies (2) and a veritable host of admiring magazine articles, it is fair to say that Franco and his films still fly well below the radar of respectable critical attention; considered, when considered at all, to be beneath both notice and contempt. In part, of course, this attitude is simply a hangover from what might be termed ‘La Plus longue nuit des auteurs’, the Cahiers du Cinémainspired revolution which, having done sterling work in elevating the importance of the Seventh Art, then proceeded, like an earlier French Revolution, to overstay its welcome, descending into a kind of intellectual Terror in which certain directors of genre films were elevated to the Pantheon (particularly if they laboured in the more obscure depths of the Hollywood system) while others (mainly European) were simply ignored.
