It is thought that by 1955 the practice of walking the mail from Mousehole, across the cliff meadows, had stopped and that the postman used a van.

The inn used to be called the Wink (they say) because you winked at the landlord to obtain some smuggled gin or brandy! In 1900 the quarry was working and small ships would arrive to take the granite blocks. Lamorna granite was in great demand and was used in the building of the Embankment in London, a new pier at Mousehole, and the Wolf Rock Lighthouse. Later, because the cove was too small for large ships, they manhandled large blocks of granite by road to Penzance for transport by sea. 1 Cove 509 Postcard with image of Lamorna Cove from an original painting by Nigel Hallard. The house is marked in the oldest maps. In 1678 the house was purchased and restored by Francis Paynter son of Arthur Paynter who was Lord of the Manor in Trelissick situated at the head of the River Fal. Further property was added to the original purchase so that eventually the estate included about 2,000 acres of land. Lt. Col. Paynter in 1910 bought the second motor car to be registered in Cornwall, a steam driven Serpolet. He owned practically all the land the Lamorna side of Lands’ End This comprised some 2,000 acres, including 32 farms. He also owned numerous houses including Clapper Mill, Trewoofe and Oakhill, all on the road to Penzance from Lamorna. He died in 1948. Col. Paynter, was one of the two sons of Thomas Paynter. Original donated by George Hoare. 4 Quarry 25 Cliff Cottage taken from the jetty for the granite from the Lamorna quarry. Angela Wheeler Album. 4 Quarry 65 Photos. The God Stone. The quay was already built before 1870; in the building of this, a granite block was placed in a prominent position with the following words taken from Psalm 127: ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.’ The 3’ x 12” x 18” stone was originally set into the seaward wall in the lower quay. After one of the great storms, the wall and the block collapsed into the sea. The granite block, lettered in lead, was recovered and set into the newer wall nearby. From Anne Forrest. 4 Quarry 93 Lamorna (St Levin) Quarry. There is a block of stone on the left in the grass which had fallen down from an aerial walkway and was never picked up again. 04 March 2021 Page 18 of 24 Ref M 463 The Jays Feathers and the little Photograph. One day in 1987, David and Christine Evans were helping David's mother to move from Oakhill Cottage in Lamorna to sheltered accommodation in Penzance. They sat on the Lawn on a lovely spring day at the head of the Lamorna valley, emptying an old tin Trunk. Most of the contents were to be thrown out, but at the end David noticed a small piece of folded lined paper at the bottom of the trunk. He was about to throw it out, but just out of curiosity, opened it. Out onto the grass fell this tiny Photograph, together with two feathers, one a jay's feather, as bright as the day that it had been put there, some seventy five years earlier. The Photo measured 3cm x 2cm. And was of Florence Munnings (Blote). M 464 Two letter written by Dame Laura Knight. [1] Letter dated 27/8/1961 to Violet Munnings. This letter indicates that Violet, Lady Munnings had been approached by Reginald Pound, the author of a biography of , for information on Blote's death.
