The inn used to be called the Wink (they say) because you winked at the landlord to obtain some smuggled gin or brandy! In 1900 the quarry was working and small ships would arrive to take the granite blocks. Lamorna granite was in great demand and was used in the building of the Embankment in London, a new pier at Mousehole, and the Wolf Rock Lighthouse. Later, because the cove was too small for large ships, they manhandled large blocks of granite by road to Penzance for transport by sea. 1 Cove 509 Postcard with image of Lamorna Cove from an original painting by Nigel Hallard. Adam Kerr doesn't think it was taken in the garden of Flagstaff but in the lane below the garden at a spot known locally as Windy Corner. 'Impossible I think to identify anyone, but I wondered whether the shortish man third from left with a straight back was Stanley Gardiner. Looks like him. Might fill a vacant corner in the next Flagstaff. Looks to me like a Sunday afternoon shot - people wearing hats, ties and waistcoats'. This is the place depicted in the Lamorna Birch watercolour in Michael Trimble’s collection that members were asked to help identify in the last Flagstaff. Patricia says that it is between Land’s End and Sennen and the pinnacle to the right of the foreground is the Irish Lady. She took the photograph on June 10 2010 having got as close to Birch’s viewpoint as she could. 1 Cove 2641 View of Lamorna from JT Blight, A Week at Land End 1 Cove 2642 Early photograph of Lamorna Cove from above. 1 Cove 2710 Lamorna cove and Quarry taken in early 1900s. 1 Cove 2746 Old photo of Flagstaff and the Cove. 1 Cove 2767 Article.
