Hillstrom Museum of Art HILLSTROM MUSEUM OF ART 3 DIRECTOR’S NOTES he Hillstrom Museum of Art welcomes this opportunity to present fine artworks from the remarkable and impressive collection of Dr. Stephen and Mrs. Martha (Steve and Marty) T Penkhus. Animal and Sporting Paintings in the Penkhus Collection: The Very English Ambience of It All includes sixty-one works that provide detailed glimpses into the English countryside, its occupants, and their activities, from around 1800 to the present. Thirty-six different artists, mostly British, are represented, among them key sporting and animal artists such as John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795–1865) and Harry Hall (1814–1882), and Royal Academicians James Ward (1769–1859) and Sir Alfred Munnings (1878–1959), the latter who served as President of the Royal Academy. Works in the exhibit feature images of racing, pets, hunting, and prized livestock including cattle and, especially, horses. -

THE FRY ART GALLERY TOO When Bardfield Came to Walden Artists in Saffron Walden from the 1960s to the 1980s 2 December 2017 to 25 March 2018 Welcome to our new display space - The Fry Art Gallery Too - which opens for the first time while our main gallery at 19a Castle Street undergoes its annual winter closure for maintenance and work on the Collection. The north west Essex village of Great Bardfield and its surrounding area became the home for a wide range of artists from the early 1930s until the 1980s. More than 3000 examples of their work are brought together in the North West Essex Collection, selections of which are displayed in exhibitions at The Fry Art Gallery. Our first display in our new supplementary space focuses on those artists who lived at various times in and around Saffron Walden in the later twentieth century. Edward and Charlotte Bawden were the first artists to arrive in Great Bardfield around 1930, along with Eric and Tirzah Ravilious. After 30 years at Brick House, Charlotte arranged in 1970 that she and Edward would move to Park Lane, Saffron Walden for their later years. Sadly, Charlotte died before the move, but Edward was welcomed into an established community of successful professional artists in and around the town. These included artists Paul Beck and John Bolam, and the stage designers Olga Lehmann and David Myerscough- Jones. Sheila Robinson had already moved to the town from Great Bardfield in 1968, with her daughter Chloë Cheese, while the writer and artist Olive Cook had been established here with her photographer and artist husband Edwin Smith for many years. -

Frances Hodgkins 14 auckland city art gallery modern european paintings in new Zealand This exhibition brings some of the modern European paintings in New Zealand together for the first time. The exhibition is small largely because many galleries could not spare more paintings from their walls and also the conditions of certain bequests do not permit loans. Nevertheless, the standard is reasonably high. Chronologically the first modern movement represented is Impressionism and the latest is Abstract Expressionism, while the principal countries concerned are Britain and France. Two artists born in New Zealand are represented — Frances Hodgkins and Raymond Mclntyre — the former well known, the latter not so well as he should be — for both arrived in Europe before 1914 when the foundations of twentieth century painting were being laid and the earlier paintings here provide some indication of the milieu in which they moved. It is hoped that this exhibition may help to persuade the public that New Zealand is not devoid of paintings representing the serious art of this century produced in Europe. His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context by looking at the contemporary art world in which he worked, and the private, commercial and public commissions he secured. In doing so, it aims to provide a more comprehensive account of Whistler’s achievement than has been afforded in any of the existing literature or biographies. This deeper examination of the artist’s practice has been made possible by considerable amounts of new factual information derived from the Whistler Archive and other archival sources. -

To appropriate something means to make it proper, to make it one’s own and thus to integrate it, to incorporate it, thereby giving it a new life. Because it becomes one’s property, one imparts it with one’s own being: what one knows, what one hates, what one likes, what one chooses, is. Then the appropriated is cut off from its former self and becomes other, transformed, re-created.1 Stanley Spencer constantly appropriated sacred texts (revealing the impossibility for him to cut off old links, to achieve a “rupture”) and incorporated them in his own world imposing distortions and other unusual plastic treatments to the forms, thereby shocking his contemporaries. -

Born Albert Daniel Rothenstein, he was the youngest of the six children of Moritz and Bertha Rothenstein, German-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1860s. He and his siblings proved to be a hugely talented and artistic family, his elder brother became Sir William Rotherstein (1872-1945), the artist and director of the Royal College of Art; two of his other siblings, Charles Rutherston and Emily Hesslein, both accumulated major modern British and French art collections and his nephew Sir John Rothenstein was direct of the Tate Gallery. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School before moving to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Art where he became close friends with Augustus John and William Orpen. He met Walter Sickert during a painting holiday in France in 1900 and by introducing Sickert to Spencer Gove became instrumental in the beginning of the Camden Town Group. -

Patrick Wright on a trip that mixed high art with low comedy and personal tragedy Patrick Wright The Guardian, Saturday 17 March 2001 He is one of the most original and accomplished painters of the 20th century, and yet he is also synonymous with a peculiarly English eccentricity. He is the artist who treated Cookham, the little Thameside village where he lived, as the measure of all experience. He is the prophet of divine sexuality who, at the second post, fell humiliated victim to a fortune-seeking lesbian. When Timothy Hyman and I set out to curate Tate Britain's new exhibition of Stanley Spencer's work, we realised that we would have to fight our way through the bizarre collection of fragmentary anecdotes that now shape his memory. Many concern Spencer's chaotic sex life, but the one that I found most enigmatic was different. It is recorded, in various memoirs, that in the autumn of 1954, this most English of painters left his home in Berkshire to visit Beijing, where he would inform Chou En-lai, the communist premier, that "I feel at home in China because I feel that Cookham is somewhere near, only just around the corner". The very idea of Spencer in China seems inherently unlikely. Indeed, it has been suggested that he was almost certainly invited by accident, after the authorities got him muddled up with the then radical poet, Stephen Spender.
