A New Production of Haydn's Opera Orlando Paladino at The 2012-06-30 08:00 CEST A new production of Haydn’s opera Orlando Paladino at the Drottningholms Slottsteater DROTTNINGHOLM, SWEDEN, June 30, 2012 — Haydn's opera Orlando Paladino, which will open at the Drottningholm Slottsteater on July 29, is based on the medieval legend of the knight Roland (Orlando), who is madly in love with Angelica, Queen of Cathay. The performance stars Rickard Söderberg, Kirsten Blaise and Pietro Spagnoli, all of whom are internationally known for their interpretation of 18th century opera. The Swedish tenor Rickard Söderberg sings the title role of Orlando, the Frankish crusader. Angelica, Queen of Cathay, is portrayed by the American soprano Kirsten Blaise, and Rodomonte, King of Barbary, is performed by the Italian lyric baritone Pietro Spagnoli,. This new production is directed by Sigrid T'Hooft, the internationally recognized authority on 18th century staging and theatrical gesture, who was also responsible for last year’s new production, Mozart’s Così fan tutte. She is once again working alongside Stephan Dietrich an expert in historical theatre costumes. T'Hooft has prepared a version of Orlando Paladino that takes full account of the wonderfully detailed archive material preserved from Haydn’s original production at Esterháza in 1782 T'Hooft and Dietrich are advocates of the concept of Historically Informed Performance-practice (HIP). Contrary to the popular misconception, this does not imply the exact reconstruction of an 18th century performance. It means drawing inspiration for 21st century performances from a detailed knowledge of historical practices. The result is both faithful to the original and grounded in today’s theatrical reality. In the words of Drottningholm’s Artistic Director, Mark Tatlow, himself well known as an interpreter of the Classical repertoire, this is a “double authenticity”: an approach that also characterises the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra, a group of leading early music specialists. Press preview July 23 There will be a press preview on Monday July 23 at 2pm, when extracts from the opera will be presented. At the same time it will also be possible to meet the singers and the artistic team. Register for the press preview by sending an e-mail to [email protected] Press Tickets Tickets for reviewers (either for the premiere, or for a later performance) can be booked by sending an e-mail to [email protected] For more information For interviews, press visits to the theatre, press photos and other information, please contact Carin Balfe Arbman on +46 (0)70-633 35 08 or e-mail [email protected] Dates of performances Orlando Paladino will premiere on July 29 and further performances will be given on August 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, and 12th. Pre-performance talks will be held one hour before the performances on August 1st, 7th and 11th. THE SINGERS Rickard Söderberg is one of Sweden's most well known singers. He is a renowned interpreter of 18th century music, and appears in opera houses and opera festivals worldwide. In the summer of 2007 he performed the title role in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Drottningholm Court Theatre, and he has also appeared in several other productions at the theatre in recent years. He has published a number of critically acclaimed CD albums and in 2011 sang Loge in Värmlandsoperan's production of Wagner's Ring. Kirsten Blaise is an internationally acclaimed interpreter of 18th century opera. She made her debut in 1996 in Indiana, but is now based in Europe, and lives in Germany. In 2011, Kirsten Blaise toured Europe, USA and South America with actor John Malkovich in the highly successful musical theatre production “The Infernal Comedy”. This year Blaise and Malkovich will collaborate again in the show The Giacomo Variations, based on Casanova's life and the operas of Mozart and da Ponte. Pietro Spagnoli started his singing career as an eight-year old choirboy in the Sistine chapel of St. Peter's in Rome. His debut on the opera stage took place a few years later, in Bellini's opera "Il Pirata" at the Opera Festival of the Valle d'Itia. Over the years, Spagnoli has appeared at opera festivals and opera houses around the world and he has worked with many well known directors. Last spring, he participated in Così fan tutte at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in the role of Don Alfonso. ABOUT THE OPERA Orlando Paladino (1782) is a Dramma eroicomico in three acts by Haydn (1732-1809). The libretto is by Nunziato Porta. The opera is sung in Italian and surtitled in Swedish. The wooden stage machinery is operated by hand. About 30 stage sets have been preserved, all decorated with themes from 18th century repertoire. The first golden age of the theatre was initiated by King Gustaf III in 1777. Together with actors like Monvel, the composers Naumann and Kraus, the ballet master Gallodier and the architect Desprez Gustaf used Drottningholm to inject new life into Swedish theatre and opera. After the king's death in 1792, the theatre was closed. Today the yearly summer Opera Festival offers new productions of 17th and 18th century operas and attracts audiences from all over the world. In 1991 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO designated the theatre as being of international cultural heritage significance. www.dtm.se Kontaktpersoner Elin West Presskontakt Externa relationer [email protected] 0733 50 26 25.

  • 14 Pierrepont at a Crossroads of Literatures
14 Pierrepont at a crossroads of literatures An instructive parallel between the first branch of the Karlamagnús Saga, the Dutch Renout and the Dutch Flovent Abstract: In the French original of the first branch of the Karlamagnús Saga [= fKMSI], in the Dutch Renout and in the Dutch Flovent – three early 13th century texts from present-day Bel- gium – a toponym Pierrepont plays a conspicous part (absent, however, from the French models of Renout and Flovent); fKMSI and Renout even have in common a triangle ‘Aimon, vassal of Charlemagne – Aie, his wife – Pierrepont, their residence’. The toponym is shown to mean Pierrepont (Aisne) near Laon in all three texts. In fKMSI, it is due almost certainly to the intervention of one of two Bishops of Liège (1200−1238) from the Pierrepont family, and in the other two texts to a similar cause. Consequently, for fKMSI a date ‘before 1240’ is proposed. According to van den Berg,1 the Middle Dutch Flovent, of which only two frag- ments are preserved,2 was probably written by a Fleming (through copied by a Brabantian) and can very roughly be dated ‘around 1200’ on the basis of its verse technique and syntax. In this text, Pierrepont plays a conspicuous part without appearing in the French original.3 In the first fragment, we learn that King Clovis is being besieged in Laon by a huge pagan army (vv. 190 ss.). To protect their rear, the pagans build a castle at a distance of four [presumably French] miles [~18 km] from Laon. Its name will be Pierlepont (vv.

Les Talens Lyriques The ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, which takes its name from the subtitle of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera Les Fêtes d’Hébé (1739), was formed in 1991 by the harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset. Championing a broad vocal and instrumental repertoire, ranging from early Baroque to the beginnings of Romanticism, the musicians of Les Talens Lyriques aim to throw light on the great masterpieces of musical history, while providing perspective by presenting rarer or little known works that are important as missing links in the European musical heritage. This musicological and editorial work, which contributes to its renown, is a priority for the ensemble. Les Talens Lyriques perform to date works by Monteverdi (L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, L’Orfeo), Cavalli (La Didone, La Calisto), Landi (La Morte d'Orfeo), Handel (Scipione, Riccardo Primo, Rinaldo, Admeto, Giulio Cesare, Serse, Arianna in Creta, Tamerlano, Ariodante, Semele, Alcina), Lully (Persée, Roland, Bellérophon, Phaéton, Amadis, Armide, Alceste), Desmarest (Vénus et Adonis), Mondonville (Les Fêtes de Paphos), Cimarosa (Il Mercato di Malmantile, Il Matrimonio segreto), Traetta (Antigona, Ippolito ed Aricia), Jommelli (Armida abbandonata), Martin y Soler (La Capricciosa corretta, Il Tutore burlato), Mozart (Mitridate, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte), Salieri (La Grotta di Trofonio, Les Danaïdes, Les Horaces, Tarare), Rameau (Zoroastre, Castor et Pollux, Les Indes galantes, Platée, Pygmalion), Gluck

  • A Basque Theatrical Interpretation of the Battle of Roncevaux
Hans-Erich Keller La Pastorale de Roland: A Basque Theatrical Interpretation of the Battle of Roncevaux Already in 1865, Gaston Paris1 called our attention to the compilation entitled La Conqueste que fit le grand Charlemaigne es Espaignes, a prose text which has often erroneously appeared with the title of Fierabras. Under the latter name, it was first printed in Geneva in 1478, without indication as to its author, whereas the title La Conqueste que fit le grand Charlemagne es Espaignes makes its appearance only in 1486 in a print by "Pierre de Saincte Lucy dict le Prince" at Lyons.2 In a reprint three years later, the name of the author of the compilation was finally revealed as that of Jean Bagnyon, whom Gustave Pawlowski3 describes as vivant dans le seconde moitié du XVe siècle. As a matter of fact, the British Library has a copy of Fierabras, printed at Lyons in 1496, which itself reproduces an edition of 1489 and in which we read on fol.

!" LIR.JOURNAL.11(19) """""""""""""""! " Dag Hedman, »Alcina rediviva. Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos« " ABSTRACT """"""""""""""""""""""" The aim of this study is to follow the transformations in eighteen librettos of the enchantress Alcina from Ludovico Ari- osto’s popular chivalric epic Orlando furioso (1516–1532). The librettos used were printed in Austria, France, Great Britain and Italy 1609–1782. The texts encompass different genres like ballets, drami/drammi per musica and feste teatrali. There are several reasons for the popularity of Alcina in the theatre of the Baroque Age, among which are her contrasting moods and the possibility of spectacular scenic effects due to the frequent occurrence of magic. The study shows that whereas there is an impressive variety in the librettists’ approach to Alcina’s personality and the plots in which she is involved, there is no clear development of the topic. " Dag Hedman is a Professor of Literature at the Depart- ment of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, University of Gothenburg. Dag Hedman """" """""""""""""""""! !" ALCINA REDIVIVA. Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos """""""""! !" According to Lorenzo Bianconi and Thomas Walker, Publius Ovidius Naso’s (43 B.C–17/18 A.D.) role as one of the main sources of inspiration for the earliest Italian librettists was soon taken over by Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533) and Torquato Tasso (1544–1595), who in their turn were replaced in the middle of the seventeenth century by historical sources. A few Ariostan librettos were written in France in the 1680s, however, and soon Ariosto had a revival in Italy, which lasted a bit into the eighteenth century.1 This development, outlined by Bianconi and Walker, has been challenged by David J.
