UNDP Project Document Governments of: Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation & Turkmenistan United Nations Development Programme PIMS #4058 The Caspian Sea: Restoring Depleted Fisheries and Consolidation of a Permanent Regional Environmental Governance Framework “CaspEco” This project builds upon a solid foundation of regional cooperation for Caspian environmental conservation put in place by the five Caspian states and the Caspian Environment Program over a period of more than 10 years with substantial catalytic support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Building on these achievements this project’s objective is to strengthen regional environmental governance and apply new thinking to the sustainable management and conservation of the Caspian’s bioresources. The project supports the littoral states' efforts to halt the decline in bioresources and to restore depleted fisheries in the Caspian Sea, through the implementation of agreed actions defined in the Caspian Strategic Action Plan (SAP), and to fully operationalize and make the Caspian Sea’s regional environmental governance mechanism sustainable. In line with the new GEF priorities, the major focus of GEF involvement will be to assist the countries to agree on the political commitments made to ecosystem-based joint action on sustainable fisheries and bioresources and introduce institutions and reforms to catalyze implementation of policies reducing over-fishing and benefiting communities. There are two main components of the project: 1) Ecosystem based management of aquatic bioresources; and 2) Strengthened regional environmental governance. The key outcomes sought under the two main components are: 1) Improved ecosystem-based aquatic bioresources management; Invasive species mitigation; Implemented policies & measures to increase reproductive success of Caspian’s diadromous fish species; Application of circum-Caspian approach to habitat conservation; and increased; Coastal communities participate in and contribute measurably to improved bioresources conservation; and 2) Operational and sustainable Tehran Convention institutions; Coordination and synergy with other projects and activities including effective donor coordination and engagement; Implementation of Strategic Convention Action Plan (SCAP) at regional level and NSCAP at national/sub-national level; Enhanced stakeholders’ engagement in the Tehran Convention process and improved public access to information. They are involved in economic activities and represent an important part of a country’s raw material potential. Many other organisms are also subject to rational use and protection. They can be associated with true resource species through interspecifi c relationships. The Caspian and Aral Seas are continental water bodies, giant saline lakes. Both categories of species are represented in the benthic and pelagic communities of the Caspian and Aral Seas and are involved in human economic activities.

August, 1962 FOREWORD This short Russian-English glossary is meant to be of assistance in translating scientific articles in the fields of aquatic biology and the study of fishes and fisheries. j^ Definitions have been obtained from a variety of sources. For the names of fishes, the text volume of "Commercial Fishes of the USSR" provided English equivalents of many Russian names. Others were found in Berg's "Freshwater Fishes", and in works by Nikolsky (1954), Galkin (1958), Borisov and Ovsiannikov (1958), Martinsen (1959), and others. The kinds of fishes most emphasized are the larger species, especially those which are of importance as food fishes in the USSR, hence likely to be encountered in routine translating. However, names of a number of important commercial species in other parts of the world have been taken from Martinsen's list. For species for which no recognized English name was discovered, I have usually given either a transliteration or a translation of the Russian name; these are put in quotation marks to distinguish them from recognized English names.

As a result of revisions of the collected material and new records (e.g., the first finding of Khvalyn spined loach Cobitis amphilekta Vasil’eva, Vasil’ev, 2012), the list of fish species has been corrected and widened. At present, the list of fish species in the Reserve includes one species of Petromyzontidae and 60 species of Acipenseridae, Clupeidae, Cyprinidae, Cobitidae, Siluridae, Coregonidae, Salmoni- dae, Esocidae, Lotidae, Atherinidae, Gasterosteidae, Syngnathidae, Percidae, and Gobiidae. Identifications used in previous lists of fishes found in the Astrakhan reserve in 1936–2016 and brief information on biology and dates of latest records of each species are given. These species are distributed among 46 genera, 20 of which were new for science at the time of description. The described microsporidia parasitize about 100 hosts belonging to major groups of freshwater and terrestrial invertebrates and fish. The goal of this publication is to draw the attention of the international community to microsporidia taxa described in Russia and FSU during the era of the “iron curtain”. Many of the taxa comprising the list, are poorly known because the descriptions would be published in Russian, often in hardly available editions. The list reflects the abundance of microsporidia and breadth of their distribution among various hosts and biocenoses. We hope that publication of the list stimulates the interest of young microsporidiologists working on the territory of FSU, to the species described by their predecessors.

These, combined with the presence of large shallow areas, constitute a potential threat to biodiversity and especially to the many endemic species.
