Band of Friends BAND OF FRIENDS A celebration of the music of Rory Gallagher Winners of the European Blues Awards 2013 Not just the notes – but the sound, energy and feel of Rory Gallagher, delivered by people who helped define it…. “Really has the atmosphere of a Rory concert” - Lust for life “This is not a tribute band but a group of its own. The group works wonders” – Rock & Folk “Sparks fly from the first note. The Band of Friends is pure cracker” – Blues focus “The pleasure flies in your face” – Voor “A sturdy pot of blues rock – they impressed, and not only me” – Bluesbreaker “Emotional highlights – a fantastic interpretation” Rockblogblues “In the music industry its hard to find something this well done. Priceless” – Miuskk.com “Like no other power unit, they celebrate the amiable guitar hero’s passion on stage” – The blues alone BAND OF FRIENDS When the Irish guitarist – vocalist passed away, he left behind an eleven – album catalogue of inspired music, and the memory of unforgettably energetic concerts Bassist Gerry McAvoy (Rory Gallagher/Nine Below zero/Champion Jack Dupree/Deep Joy) appeared on every one of these albums. “ It must have been around 2006 when I started listening to all my old vinyl, which I hadn’t listened to for years. Among these records were my Rory Gallagher albums. I played them constantly, realising what great songs and what a great composer Rory really was. I wanted to take these songs and play them live, but I needed the right musicians. Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher/Sensational Alex Harvey band/Michael Schenker group/Gary Moore/Greg Lake) came on board, as did Marcel Scherpenzeel (Guitar & vocals) who I had met a year or so before. This was to become a 8 year journey. Sadly we lost Ted in January 2019. Marcel has formed his own band. So here we are in 2020 with a new line up, and a fresh approach. we will be touring extensively, celebrating Rory’s 25th anniversary 2020 Celebrating Rory’s 25th anniversary Band of friends will be touring throughout 2020 Worldwide, celebrating Rory’s 25th anniversary. Gerry will be joined by Brendan O’Neill on drums. Brendan played with Rory and Gerry for 10 years 1981 – 1991, Recording “Jinx”, “Defender” , “Fresh evidence”. Brendan toured extensively with Rory, travelling to USA, Japan, Australia, Europe. Brendan O’Neill Stephan Graf Paul Rose with Rory BAND OF FRIENDS Paul Rose. A guitar players guitar player. He has played with some of the top names in the business. He was picked by Rory out of 1000 young guitarists to win the Fender sponsored best guitarist competition. “A very hot player” – Rory Gallagher “Paul blew my mind, I’m very proud of him” – Seymour Duncan “ Quite possibly the best guitarist I’ve ever seen” – British blues news “ Ingenious and staggering” – Guitar & Bass magazine “ Truly special, exceptional” – Guitar techniques magazine Stephan Graf. Stephan has been playing with his own band Double vision, as a tribute to Rory. Stephan discovered Rory at a very early age. He really has the feel for Rory’s music. “In the era of tribute acts who deliver note – perfect renditions of their heroes’ catalogues, the Band of Friends is something different. They can do the notes played by electric blues icon Rory Gallagher. But they also do the sound, energy and feel – because the band includes people who helped define those essential elements” – Music today USA BAND OF FRIENDS DATES 2020 March 3rd Nachtleben, Frankfurt. • Alex Harvey and “The Tomahawk Kid”: Mode and Interpretation
Alex Harvey and “The Tomahawk Kid”: Mode and Interpretation David Montgomery Abstract: Alex Harvey and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band achieved only marginal popularity during Harvey’s lifetime. Yet an examination of Harvey’s “The Tomahawk Kid,” based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, shows an idiosyncratic musical style that combines rock and Scottish Celtic influences, subtle textual interpretation, unique compositional choices, and modal tonalities. Introduction The academic study of popular music oscillates between two preoccupations. On one hand, the dogmas of sub-cultural theory still influence popular music discourse and general cultural theory to a great degree. On the other hand, this discourse cannot escape the parameters of its label— popular. In essence, the two poles may be staked as cultural theory versus popular appreciation; but in a way difficult to describe, the application of critical theory has begun to seem more like an attempt to avoid an aesthetic conundrum— a kind of elevation of the demotic artefact to a height it cannot bear. Ever resourceful, the practitioners of popular music studies have wriggled out of this quandary and into the at least temporarily secure embrace of post feminist studies, world pop, and the ethnography of locale; in other words, into areas where inquiry is either of self-evident importance, exotic, or comfortably esoteric. Even if the locale is no more exotic than Glasgow, Scotland or Montgomery, Alabama, or the object mundane, the conceit of the critical stance has proven sufficient. Things change, canons crumble, time has done its work. The difficult “aesthetics” of popular music studies, the indeterminate nature of its aims, is a nagging problem.

  • HR: in His Recent Interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce Told Us That One of His Favourite Performances Had Been at Rockpalast with Rory Gallagher
HR: In his recent interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce told us that one of his favourite performances had been at RockPalast with Rory Gallagher. What are your own memories of sharing the stage with Rory? Gerry McAvoy : I remember the night Jack Bruce got up and jammed with Rory at Rockpalast. Jack had done his own show before us (solo on piano). It was fantastic, just to listen to that voice was amazing. I don't know if it was pre-planned, but when we finished our performance and as we were about to go back on stage for an encore, Rory asked Jack (who was standing side stage) would he like to get up for a jam. Jack said yes, and asked me if I would mind if he used my bass rig. Here's Jack Bruce, my idol since I was a teenager asking to use my amp. I mean, what do you say? So they jammed "Politician" a Cream number, It was fantastic! As for my own memories of sharing the stage with Rory. It was fantastic 90% of the time. Like any band you do have off nights. But they were few and far between. It was a pleasure to work with a man with so much talent. Ted McKenna : Always on the edge. Never sure of what might happen next. Always pushing to give 150% for the whole 2hr - 2.30min show. That's the way Rory played. It was real and raw with all the rough edges. I'd call it Rock'n'Roll! Hearing from Gerry there about Jack Bruce, it reminded me that I'd had the great pleasure of working with Jack some years ago myself.

Well, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that although the industry has taken its share of abuse from artists over the years, it’s also received a few bouquets.
