HR: in His Recent Interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce Told Us That One of His Favourite Performances Had Been at Rockpalast with Rory Gallagher
HR: In his recent interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce told us that one of his favourite performances had been at RockPalast with Rory Gallagher. What are your own memories of sharing the stage with Rory? Gerry McAvoy : I remember the night Jack Bruce got up and jammed with Rory at Rockpalast. Jack had done his own show before us (solo on piano). It was fantastic, just to listen to that voice was amazing. I don't know if it was pre-planned, but when we finished our performance and as we were about to go back on stage for an encore, Rory asked Jack (who was standing side stage) would he like to get up for a jam. Jack said yes, and asked me if I would mind if he used my bass rig. Here's Jack Bruce, my idol since I was a teenager asking to use my amp. I mean, what do you say? So they jammed "Politician" a Cream number, It was fantastic! As for my own memories of sharing the stage with Rory. It was fantastic 90% of the time. Like any band you do have off nights. But they were few and far between. It was a pleasure to work with a man with so much talent. Ted McKenna : Always on the edge. Never sure of what might happen next. Always pushing to give 150% for the whole 2hr - 2.30min show. That's the way Rory played. It was real and raw with all the rough edges. I'd call it Rock'n'Roll! Hearing from Gerry there about Jack Bruce, it reminded me that I'd had the great pleasure of working with Jack some years ago myself. -

Key Music Books You Must Read
KEY MUSIC BOOKS YOU MUST READ This selection of books is divided into two categories – essential reading for anyone wanting to commit to a career in the music industry; and entertaining reads which are informative and enjoyable but are essentially geared at all music enthusiasts. ESSENTIAL READING FOR MUSIC STUDENTS “How music works” by David Byrne Chapter 7 of this book is entitled “Business and Finances (distribution and survival options for music artists)” and it is absolutely essential reading for any songwriter or musician. David Byrne of legendary rock group Talking Heads explains the detailed financial ins and outs of one of his album releases. He outlines the various costs involved and who gets the various percentages. He uses colour-coded diagrams to convey how the money pie is shared. At the same time, he describes the complex financial mechanisms of the modern music business. This is unmissable information. Few working musicians take the time to explain the money trail to newcomers who usually believe there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What Byrne explains is how a musician who is willing to keep a lid on costs can make a modest living recording albums and touring. The rest of the book has a lot of interesting material, some of it a bit academic, some of it needing effort to persevere. But Byrne's enthusiasm for music usually carries you along. I liked the following bits in particular: Music as social glue, as a self- empowering social agent (pages 291-293); the value of music education (pages 295- 296); eight rules about how to create a music scene (pages 251-263); how recording technology is now incredibly accessible and cheap so there is no need for albums to be costly to record (pages 180-181); and the mp3 – poorer sound quality but maybe it is better to value convenience over sound (pages 124-126). -

FAME Review: Johnny Winter - Live at Rockpalast (CD) Page 1 of 2 FAME Review: Johnny Winter - Live at Rockpalast (CD) Live at Rockpalast Johnny Winter MVD Audio - MVD5185A (CD) Available from MVD Entertainment Group . A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker ([email protected] ). Since I covered this gig in its DVD format (here ), I'm here going to take the opportunity to ponder why Johnny Winter seems to have been neglected by time and scribes, as the man certainly hasn't come in for the accolades and sales figures so richly deserved by such a devotion to his art and the blues. The key, however, may well lie in what MVD, the issuing label, describes as his perennial approach: "straight up blues…lean and mean". Such a domain is not always to the market's tastes, the popular mind being a fickle beast and too oft informed by a surfeit of tinsel and glitter having nothing to do with true aesthetics, authenticity, or integrity. Nowhere is this more glaringly proven than in the analogue case of brother Edgar's raging success with the now anthemic Frankenstein , a cut having nothing to do with the gent's love of rhythm and blues, soul, and the sort of bayou sound so well shown in the still underrated White Trash ensemble. More, Free Ride , another big hit off the same LP (They Only Come Out at Night ), was not Edgar's at all but entirely the child of pop schlockmeister Dan Hartman. Must be grating, to earn supper and sleep by lowering oneself to such levels, hm, Edgar? No insult is intended, the music world is tough, but Johnny himself was rarely able to do that transformation shuffle very well. -
The Lost Rolling Stone: How Guitar Great Rory Gallagher Was Airbrushed from Rock History
15/06/2020 The lost Rolling Stone: how guitar great Rory Gallagher was airbrushed from rock history NEWS WEBSITE OF THE YEAR My Feed Coronavirus News Politics Sport Business Money Opinion Tech Life Style Travel Culture See all Culture The lost Rolling Stone: how guitar great Rory Gallagher was airbrushed from rock history Recruited by the Stones and worshipped by Jimi Hendrix, the Irishman was a prodigy. So why, asks his brother Dónal, did he die so quietly? By Ed Power 15 June 2020 • 10:28am 123 On January 23, 1975 Mick Jagger stood in the arrivals hall at Rotterdam airport on the look-out for a long-haired Irishman in a checked shirt. Eventually he spotted Rory Gallagher, the 26-year-old guitar wizard from Cork, fresh off a flight from Heathrow. Gallagher walked slowly through arrivals, hefting a suitcase, his battered 1961 Fender Stratocaster and an amplifier. He and Jagger went outside to a taxi rank. Jagger and a cabbie haggled over the price of the 15 minute drive back to De Doelen Concert Hall, close to Rotterdam Centraal train station. Bombed into oblivion during the war, the 2,200 capacity venue had been rebuilt in 1966. Now it was playing host to a different kind of conflict, as the Stones rehearsed for their upcoming tour. This was to be their first since the surprise departure that December of guitarist Mick Taylor (who had in turn replaced founding member Brian Jones in 1969). Gallagher was in the Netherlands to audition for the berth vacated by Taylor. Later that evening he stepped onto the cavernous De Doelen stage, his footsteps echoing in the floorboards. -

Priceless” – Miuskk.com “Like no other power unit, they celebrate the amiable guitar hero’s passion on stage” – The blues alone BAND OF FRIENDS When the Irish guitarist – vocalist passed away, he left behind an eleven – album catalogue of inspired music, and the memory of unforgettably energetic concerts Bassist Gerry McAvoy (Rory Gallagher/Nine Below zero/Champion Jack Dupree/Deep Joy) appeared on every one of these albums. “ It must have been around 2006 when I started listening to all my old vinyl, which I hadn’t listened to for years. Among these records were my Rory Gallagher albums. I played them constantly, realising what great songs and what a great composer Rory really was. I wanted to take these songs and play them live, but I needed the right musicians. Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher/Sensational Alex Harvey band/Michael Schenker group/Gary Moore/Greg Lake) came on board, as did Marcel Scherpenzeel (Guitar & vocals) who I had met a year or so before.
