MOST OF THE KNOWN FACTS, BUT MANY PHOTOGRAPHS THAT GIVE BETTER INSIGHT INTO GALLAGHERBy Stuart Jefferson"I see music as a lifetime affair. I'm not in it for the big kill and then get out.""This guitar is part of my psychic makeup.""This is the best, it's my life, this is my best friend." Rory Gallagher. It's simple. If you're a Rory Gallagher fan, get this book. Most of the few known parts of Gallagher's life are here, from his boyhood, through early bands like The Impact, on into Taste, and into the various bands he led under his own name. The book looks at his session with Muddy Waters and into the 70's when Gallagher was (arguably) at his best. There's a chapter devoted to the 1980's, when things were difficult for Gallagher and his style of music. From there he continued to play and record into the 90's (his last complete studio album was "Fresh Evidence") until his death in 1995. The author also looks at various albums beginning with Taste, and through the albums under his own name. Also included is an in depth Discography of Gallagher's singles and albums.Equally compelling (maybe more so) are the many photographs (both color and bw) and other period graphics throughout the book, which add needed depth to the text. The author, Marcus Connaughton, has used what information he could find in describing various points in Gallagher's life. But Gallagher was notoriously tight lipped about his personal life. Even his brother Donal never really knew him well, and described him as lonely and melancholic. But the photographs generate real excitement and give added weight in showing Gallagher's commitment to his music-he never compromised or sold out.Few biographies have, basically, so little information as far as gaining some insight into who that person is/was. But I have to say again, it's the many exciting, atmospheric photographs of Gallagher on stage (check out pages 84-85, and page 110, and page 127-you'll see what I mean) that give us some insight into Gallagher. The constants are easily seen-the checkered shirt, the same battered Stratocaster guitar, his deep feeling for the music, and the excitement he could generate on stage. He had the ability to capture an audience with his playing-whether it was a slow blues or when he kicked things into overdrive-it didn't matter. It was truly something to experience. I only heard him once, but that was all the proof I needed to know he was the real deal-not some pasty Irish boy trying to play the blues. His devotion to the music was obvious. That and how much fun he was having. And that's what many of these photographs show. This is one of those rare biographies when the photographs seem to tell more (or at least enough) about someone. While this isn't (hopefully) the last word on Gallagher, it will do until then.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. RORY GALLAGHER: HIS LIFE AND TIMESBy J. PetzakIrish music biz veteran Marcus Connaughton's bio of the man many consider the greatest of his genre contains fascinating interviews with Gallagher and those close to him, plus interesting insights into his musical background and career. It is also full of color and black and white photos chronicling Gallagher's life and long career. If it is lacking in the personal portrait I wished to gain insight into, it is because, according to everyone close to him, no one really knew Rory Gallagher. He remains very much a cypher seventeen years after his untimely passing. I recommend this book, however, for anyone interested in the musical career of this underrated and still largely unappreciated musical genius whose love for American blues and rock, fused with his Irish roots, gave the world something unique and ushered in the era of U2, Thin Lizzy, and other Irish bands of renown.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I was expecting more..By Dan PieperIn fact I was expecting a LOT more. What I got out of this book were a lot of recycled anecdotes I had already read through various research on the web, and all manner of pseudo-historical info on Rory's influences...which I felt took up way too much of the book and my time. I didn't feel after reading this that I had learned a lot I didn't already know, and I felt as though many points of interest that fans of Rory would have were glossed over or outright ignored. I would hesitate to recommend this book to anyone but the newcomer to Rory and his music. Rory Gallagher is a hero and icon of rock music. He inspired guitar players from The Edge to Johnny Marr, Slash to Gary Moore, Johnny Fean to Philip Donnelly, Declan Sinnott to Brian May. Acknowledged as one of the world's leading guitarists, he collaborated with his boyhood hero Muddy Waters, played with Jerry Lee Lewis, Albert King, and Lonnie Donegan. In this compelling biography, contemporaries, fellow musicians, filmmaker Tony Palmer, and Taste drummer John Wilson tell stories about Rory from his meteoric rise in the late-1960s with Taste to his remarkable solo career. This is a compelling testament to the musical life of a shy and retiring working-class hero, distinguished by his check shirts and his astounding dexterity on acoustic and electric guitar - the guitarist and blues man who blazed a trail for others to follow. "It is a wonderful work, and I am grateful to have some of my conversation with Rory live on in your pages." Jas Obrecht, former editor of Guitar Player "Beautifully presented." The Archive "The best-looking book on Rory so far." Record Collector magazine "Lavish production ... in-depth study." Books Ireland"Essential reading for Gallagher fans old and new [...] Encyclopaedic chronicle." Irish News"One of 7 books you should own [...] Marcus makes the case with passion." • HR: in His Recent Interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce Told Us That One of His Favourite Performances Had Been at Rockpalast with Rory Gallagher
HR: In his recent interview with Blackmoon Magazine, Jack Bruce told us that one of his favourite performances had been at RockPalast with Rory Gallagher. What are your own memories of sharing the stage with Rory? Gerry McAvoy : I remember the night Jack Bruce got up and jammed with Rory at Rockpalast. Jack had done his own show before us (solo on piano). It was fantastic, just to listen to that voice was amazing. I don't know if it was pre-planned, but when we finished our performance and as we were about to go back on stage for an encore, Rory asked Jack (who was standing side stage) would he like to get up for a jam. Jack said yes, and asked me if I would mind if he used my bass rig. Here's Jack Bruce, my idol since I was a teenager asking to use my amp. I mean, what do you say? So they jammed "Politician" a Cream number, It was fantastic! As for my own memories of sharing the stage with Rory. It was fantastic 90% of the time. Like any band you do have off nights. But they were few and far between. It was a pleasure to work with a man with so much talent. Ted McKenna : Always on the edge. Never sure of what might happen next. Always pushing to give 150% for the whole 2hr - 2.30min show. That's the way Rory played. It was real and raw with all the rough edges. I'd call it Rock'n'Roll! Hearing from Gerry there about Jack Bruce, it reminded me that I'd had the great pleasure of working with Jack some years ago myself.

  • Key Music Books You Must Read
KEY MUSIC BOOKS YOU MUST READ This selection of books is divided into two categories – essential reading for anyone wanting to commit to a career in the music industry; and entertaining reads which are informative and enjoyable but are essentially geared at all music enthusiasts. ESSENTIAL READING FOR MUSIC STUDENTS “How music works” by David Byrne Chapter 7 of this book is entitled “Business and Finances (distribution and survival options for music artists)” and it is absolutely essential reading for any songwriter or musician. David Byrne of legendary rock group Talking Heads explains the detailed financial ins and outs of one of his album releases. He outlines the various costs involved and who gets the various percentages. He uses colour-coded diagrams to convey how the money pie is shared. At the same time, he describes the complex financial mechanisms of the modern music business. This is unmissable information. Few working musicians take the time to explain the money trail to newcomers who usually believe there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What Byrne explains is how a musician who is willing to keep a lid on costs can make a modest living recording albums and touring. The rest of the book has a lot of interesting material, some of it a bit academic, some of it needing effort to persevere. But Byrne's enthusiasm for music usually carries you along. I liked the following bits in particular: Music as social glue, as a self- empowering social agent (pages 291-293); the value of music education (pages 295- 296); eight rules about how to create a music scene (pages 251-263); how recording technology is now incredibly accessible and cheap so there is no need for albums to be costly to record (pages 180-181); and the mp3 – poorer sound quality but maybe it is better to value convenience over sound (pages 124-126).

FAME Review: Johnny Winter - Live at Rockpalast (CD) Page 1 of 2 FAME Review: Johnny Winter - Live at Rockpalast (CD) Live at Rockpalast Johnny Winter MVD Audio - MVD5185A (CD) Available from MVD Entertainment Group . A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker ([email protected] ). Since I covered this gig in its DVD format (here ), I'm here going to take the opportunity to ponder why Johnny Winter seems to have been neglected by time and scribes, as the man certainly hasn't come in for the accolades and sales figures so richly deserved by such a devotion to his art and the blues. The key, however, may well lie in what MVD, the issuing label, describes as his perennial approach: "straight up blues…lean and mean". Such a domain is not always to the market's tastes, the popular mind being a fickle beast and too oft informed by a surfeit of tinsel and glitter having nothing to do with true aesthetics, authenticity, or integrity. Nowhere is this more glaringly proven than in the analogue case of brother Edgar's raging success with the now anthemic Frankenstein , a cut having nothing to do with the gent's love of rhythm and blues, soul, and the sort of bayou sound so well shown in the still underrated White Trash ensemble. More, Free Ride , another big hit off the same LP (They Only Come Out at Night ), was not Edgar's at all but entirely the child of pop schlockmeister Dan Hartman. Must be grating, to earn supper and sleep by lowering oneself to such levels, hm, Edgar? No insult is intended, the music world is tough, but Johnny himself was rarely able to do that transformation shuffle very well.

15/06/2020 The lost Rolling Stone: how guitar great Rory Gallagher was airbrushed from rock history NEWS WEBSITE OF THE YEAR My Feed Coronavirus News Politics Sport Business Money Opinion Tech Life Style Travel Culture See all Culture The lost Rolling Stone: how guitar great Rory Gallagher was airbrushed from rock history Recruited by the Stones and worshipped by Jimi Hendrix, the Irishman was a prodigy. So why, asks his brother Dónal, did he die so quietly? By Ed Power 15 June 2020 • 10:28am 123 On January 23, 1975 Mick Jagger stood in the arrivals hall at Rotterdam airport on the look-out for a long-haired Irishman in a checked shirt. Eventually he spotted Rory Gallagher, the 26-year-old guitar wizard from Cork, fresh off a flight from Heathrow. Gallagher walked slowly through arrivals, hefting a suitcase, his battered 1961 Fender Stratocaster and an amplifier. He and Jagger went outside to a taxi rank. Jagger and a cabbie haggled over the price of the 15 minute drive back to De Doelen Concert Hall, close to Rotterdam Centraal train station. Bombed into oblivion during the war, the 2,200 capacity venue had been rebuilt in 1966. Now it was playing host to a different kind of conflict, as the Stones rehearsed for their upcoming tour. This was to be their first since the surprise departure that December of guitarist Mick Taylor (who had in turn replaced founding member Brian Jones in 1969). Gallagher was in the Netherlands to audition for the berth vacated by Taylor. Later that evening he stepped onto the cavernous De Doelen stage, his footsteps echoing in the floorboards.
