January 2017 In This Issue: January Events | AuthorSpeak | Book Discussions | Business Workshops Children's Programs | Concerts | Healthy Minds/Healthy Bodies | Weekly Programs January 2017 Greetings! It's 2017, and I just want to say one word to you, just one word. Are you listening? AUDIOBOOKS If your New Year's resolutions include more (exercise, reading) or less (road rage, sleeplessness), put AUDIOBOOKS at the top of that list. You won't feel like you're on a treadmill when you are engrossed in a mystery. Being stuck in traffic isn't so bad when you are catching up on your reading. When you can't sleep, stop thinking about whatever it is that's keeping you awake. Close your eyes, plug in your earphones and put the AUDIOBOOK on sleep timer. You don't have to pay, not even overdue fines, or even come into the library. You just have to have a Norwalk library card. If you don't have one, but live, work or go to school in Norwalk, Go online and get one! (Actually, that should be New Year's resolution #1). We have three databases from which you can choose your first audiobook, and that is not a free trial; they are always free. Be sure to download the books through their apps so you can listen wherever you are. Hoopla Enter your email; scroll down to Norwalk Public Library (CT); enter your library card number; download the app. Hoopla titles are all available all the time. One Click Digital Register with your library card #; set up a user name and password; give your email; download the app. One Click titles will not be available for you to download if someone else has them "checked out". In that case, you can put a title "on hold" for you to be notified when the AUDIOBOOK is "returned". Overdrive Sign in with your library card number; download the app. Using Overdrive is like checking a book out of the library. Be sure to check it back in when you are done so the next person on the hold list can be notified. For more info, call 203-899-2780 (main library) or 203-899-2790 (SoNo branch library) and ask to book a librarian for one-on-one assistance. We also have printed handouts available. You can download E-books and movies from these databases as well, but they won't help you with road rage, exercise, or sleeping. Now, about those ten pounds... All best, Chris Library Displays SPECIAL BOOK SALE AND DISPLAY In the Reading Room Area on the Main Level January 2017 Art & Architecture The Friends of the Norwalk Public Library will be offering a great variety of books about Art, Antiques and Architecture donated by area residents. • A NEW DIRECTION for CHICK LIT by Rachel
ABSTRACT CONSCIOUSNESS-RAISING: A NEW DIRECTION FOR CHICK LIT by Rachel R. Rode Schaefer Focusing on novels published outside of the popular market, this thesis seeks to draw attention to work being published under the label of chick lit that subverts standard chick lit genre conventions. While much work has been and is being done that concentrates on popular market chick lit, such as Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City (1996), only cursory attention is being given to transnational, minority, and religious chick lit. This thesis considers chick lit within the larger history of women’s writing in order to contextualize the genre. Since chick lit has been connected to both feminism and post-feminism in its origins, consideration of this genre as a feminist genre focuses attention on how chick lit functions as a consciousness-raising genre. I’ve always had a problem with this concept. In my mind, I equated lowering my expectations with settling for something less. Accepting mediocrity. Giving up, in a sense. During this time of the year, you will read a lot of articles that address stepholidays and all that comes with them. Writers will advise you to anticipate unexpected schedule changes, prepare for inevitable encounters with exes and to know in advance that most family gatherings never live up to the perfect scenes depicted in those Norman Rockwell paintings.

  • This Reading Group Guide for Primates of Park Avenue Includes An
This reading group guide for Primates of Park Avenue includes an introduction, discussion questions, ideas for enhancing your book club, and a Q&A with Wednesday Martin. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion. We hope that these ideas will enrich your conversation and increase your enjoyment of the book. Introduction Wednesday Martin’s new memoir, Primates of Park Avenue, is an inside look at the unexpectedly stressful and anxious lives of Manhattan’s most elite set: Upper East Side mommies. The book follows Wednesday on her journey to join the “it” crew in Manhattan, and no detail—no matter how trivial or painful—is left out. We read about the feelings of exclusion and unhappiness Wednesday experiences as she learns to navigate the sometimes-cruel streets and female “friendships” west of Lexington Avenue. We hear about her epic quest to own an Hermès Birkin bag and about the cutthroat nature of preschool applications on the Upper East Side. Through it all, Wednesday straddles the line between subjective insider desperate to find a place for herself and her son and academically detached outsider using her background in anthropology and primatology to help make sense of her world, one she realizes might seem silly and unsympathetic from the outside. Wednesday is both participant in and observer of the rituals of motherhood in Manhattan’s richest neighborhood. Discussion Questions 1. In her introduction, author Wednesday Martin asks herself “who were they really, these glamorous, stylishly turned out women with sophisticated babies?” (2).
