THE COMMUNITY OF WRITERS 20I8 Summer Workshops... • Poetry Workshop: June 23 - 30 • Writers Workshops in Fiction, Nonfiction & Memoir: July 8 - 15 The Community of Writers For 48 summers, the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley has brought together poets and prose writers for separate weeks of workshops, individual conferences, lectures, panels, readings, and discussions of the craft and the business of writing. Our aim is to assist writers to improve their craft and thus, in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support, move them closer to achieving their goals. The Community of Writers holds its summer writing workshops in Squaw Valley in a ski lodge at the foot of the ski slopes. TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH MICHEL GONDRY Michel Gondry is one of the most creative contemporary directors, known for his astonishingly inventive style that combines complex technological innovation with an almost childlike playfulness, and an ability to move fluidly between dream and reality. Gondry has directed feature films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep), documentaries (Dave Chappelle's Block Party), music videos for Bjork, Radiohead, The White Stripes, and Daft Punk, and numerous award-winning commercials. He is also an installation artist who has been featured at Deitch Projects. In this conversation with Chief Curator David Schwartz, Gondry discusses his remarkable career. 02_shaw:SITUATIONS 10/16/11 12:40 PM Page 11 BABEL AND THE GLOBAL HOLLYWOOD GAZE Deborah Shaw BABEL AND THE GLOBAL HOLLYWOOD GAZE n popular imaginaries, “world cinema” and Hollywood commercial cinema appear to be two opposing forms of filmic production obeying Idiverse political and aesthetic laws. However, definitions of world cin- ema have been vague and often contradictory, while some leftist discourses have a simplistic take on the evils of reactionary Hollywood, seeing it in rather monolithic terms. In this article, I examine some of the ways in which the term “world cinema” has been used, and I explore the film Babel (2006), the last of the three films of the collaboration between the Mexicans Alejandro González Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga.1 Babel sets out to be a new sort of film that attempts to create a “world cinema” gaze within a commercial Hollywood framework. I exam- ine how it approaches this and ask whether the film succeeds in this attempt. I explore the tensions between progressive and conservative political agendas, and pay particular attention to the ways “other” cul- tures are seen in a film with “Third World” pretensions and U.S money behind it. I frame my analysis around a key question: does the Iñárritu-led outfit successfully create a paradigmatic “transnational world cinema” text that de-centers U.S. hegemony, or is this a utopian project doomed to failure in a film funded predominantly by major U.S. studios?2 I examine the ways in which the film engages with the tourist gaze and ask whether the film replaces this gaze with a world cinema gaze or merely reproduces it in new ways. -

19 NEW MODES OF SELF-FASHIONING THE ZEN MASTER’S COMICS: SELF-AWARENESS AND POPULAR CULTURE IN GLEN DAVID GOLD’S I WILL BE COMPLETE ALEXANDRU BUDAC West University, Timişoara Abstract: Raised in a chic California mansion at the peak of the counterculture movement, novelist Glen David Gold recounts the tormenting relationship with his estranged parents, and especially with his bohemian and deeply troubled mother. When the latter leaves him alone in San Francisco, at the age of twelve, he has to find ways to survive and attend school. I assess how comic books, movies, music, Gold’s passion for the Japanese culture, and his perception of time make for the labyrinthine structure of his memoir. Probably not, but we have found the means to make this need a public – and global – asset. Or at least many people belive it to be so. Technically, in the age of the Internet and social media, everyone’s private life might come under everyone’s scrutiny and it is increasingly difficult to tell the mere online confession from dishonest self-advertising, or truth-telling from malicious fabrications. Assessing the impact of generalized “confessionalism”, as he calls it ironically, on memoir writing – a venerable genre besieged by fraud and commercial success during the last decades – William Giraldi (2018: 99) notices that “social media has turned untold citizens into hourly memoirists in miniature. We live now in a culture of incessant confession and self-discovery: a non-stop spelunking into empty caves.” It comes as no surprise then that professional writers stand up for the memoir as an artistic form and genuine self-examination, rather than self-interest. -

ABSTRACT CONSCIOUSNESS-RAISING: A NEW DIRECTION FOR CHICK LIT by Rachel R. Rode Schaefer Focusing on novels published outside of the popular market, this thesis seeks to draw attention to work being published under the label of chick lit that subverts standard chick lit genre conventions. While much work has been and is being done that concentrates on popular market chick lit, such as Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City (1996), only cursory attention is being given to transnational, minority, and religious chick lit. This thesis considers chick lit within the larger history of women’s writing in order to contextualize the genre. Since chick lit has been connected to both feminism and post-feminism in its origins, consideration of this genre as a feminist genre focuses attention on how chick lit functions as a consciousness-raising genre.
